Just watched 20/20 episode last night on the murder of Florida State University law professor Daniel Markel.

Question for you Florida people - why in the hell weren't the Adelson's charged? They clearly hired the killers. What's the scope?

No real paper trail. They did it, but I think the evidence against them while compelling is only circumstantial.

There were witnesses that could have been flipped. There was a trail of money. Circumstantial cases are sometimes the most compelling. I thought the prosecutor was either chickensh*t or in the bag.

You get essentially one bite at the apple, don't want to go into it with a weak case and provide them immunity henceforward.

At least three people were charged with the murder. Based on the 20/20 episode no effort was made to flip one or two of them. Certainly these three had absolutely no loyalty to the Adelsons. That's how these murder-for-hires cases typically get worked up - flip someone. Am I missing something?

Nope just like Carol Baskins and OJ Simpson, everyone knows who did it. The law just let us down.

Bumping an old thread, because I just listened to a podcast about this case. As I recall, there was someone from the LR close with Dan?

Anyhow- the audio clips of the FBI tapping the brother's phone seem pretty damning. and the Katherine chick is being retried, but the podcast mentioned Charlie Adelson was paying Katherine with cars and cash- and more importantly- a boobie job. Google disappointed and found now evidence of these bolt ons.

Never trust your side piece to keep quiet about a murder. Is that the moral of the story?

Charlie and Wendi have other powerful connections, too, no doubt. At the time of the bump, Wendi was working as a clerk in a federal court. Charlie and Donna discuss this on a wiretap, revealing that Wendi’s judge was getting information from a Tallahassee judge to share with her about the case. Other current and former state legislators, local judges, and political advocates are in Adelson circles, too.

Seems like we should know the judge(s) name(s) on this matter. If not strictly illegal, it’s clearly unethical.

She clerked for Adelberto Jordan in 2015. I imagine the sharing of information was well-intentioned. If Jordan had thought she was involved, he never would have kept her on.

“Well-intentioned” from what perspective?
The lady trying to avoid jail, or the family seeking Justice?

Has Michael Weinstein and his family helped their friends get away with murder?

Was unaware of this murder until this thread bump Today. Fascinating case, and great work to track down the car to break it open. Appears Charlie will hopefully be convicted. Would like to see the ex and mother charged as well, and it sounds like they should be based on the wire tap.

This is just another example of if you’re well to do and can afford good lawyers you can get away with murder.

See OJ.

If you have to rely on a public defender you’re going to the big house.

That’s the problem with our justice system. It’s not racial it’s wealth or lack there of…Yes racial minorities are disproportionately effected. But by defining it by race you’re not getting to the core issue.

What's the cliff notes version of this? Ex-wife has her family kill her former husband?

Hats off to the police and FBI on this one. They did a classic bump on the family and got them all talking. Sounds like they got good stuff on the father, too.

Pro tip: if the police approach you out of nowhere, years after your crime, to talk, don’t go home and discuss the matter with your co-conspirators.

If Markel has any living relatives that want the boys, I hope they get custody after all the Adelson's go to jail.
