Question on bible

What’s God’s deal with flesh eating bacteria? Why he do that?
Paving the way for the next replacement of the apex species.

It's hard to know what the dinosaurs did wrong, or why God decided to give humanity the next shots. But it's getting clearer and clearer why God has lost confidence in humanity. And, no, it's not because we don't pray enough - although it might be because we prey too much.

Flesh has had its chance. It's robots and AI next.

Yeah, any story that doesn't make sense to today's audience is explained away as translation issues, incorrect interpretation, taken out of context, appropriate for the those times, etc. So if the Bible appears to be an error, it's the a problem with the Bible, the problem is with us mere mortals.

That’s part of the beauty of Holstein, and probably why I remember this random bit from so long ago. His main takeaway was the rib story is dumb as hell and the early Christians are morons for jacking up the original.

It is a very crazy bacteria that has no purpose but to eat the living. GWAR is a metal band and I see creationist god from the Old Testament as some kind of vengeful metal head. I could see Old Testament god being a fan of GWAR and their stage costumes.

Clever. I'm glad I asked, and that you answered or I would not have known.

Sure, but we are THE apex predator. For now.

Just as Jesus taught us to be. Oh wait....

If there were a God and if he got mad at us, you think that might be the reason?
Nah, I sorta see the creation moment as something like the enchanter Tim in The Holy Grail who just sort of set stuff in motion; I'm quite confident the flesh eating bacteria emerged as a result of natural mutation of the more polite bacteria. But either way, Job 38

JFC, so cringe to read posts of the Uber religious posters spin the Adam and Eve story. Especially hilarious is the “it was never meant to be taken literally”. Oh yeah? The fvck it wasn’t taken as absolutely true by every Christian in the world up until a 100 years or so ago when critical thinkers started asking questions. I’m a believer in Christ, but the Bible is full of fairy tales. It was written hundreds of years after Christ lived by men FFS.

Brah, the Gospel of Mark was written 35 years after Jesus was crucified. That's a VERY short time in ancient history. It was within the lifetimes of the Apostles.

35 years ago was 1988. Not that long.

Ask a Vietnam Vet about their experiences...the war was 50+ years ago.

The Bible is like a library. There are indeed metaphors...hardly "fairy tales."

There are fairy tales in the Bible that are allegories. See Jonah & the Whale; Noah’s Ark

I wouldn't use the phrase "fairy tales", personally.
Why not? It’s story telling with a message. God didn’t actually send a whale to save Jonah who had lost his faith. Noah didn’t build an ark so two of every beast could be saved from the great flood because the world had become too wicked.

Because atheists use that phrase to discredit the entire Bible, especially the Gospels, which are historical biography.

You are just wrong on this. Literalist interpretation is mostly a modern phenomenon.

Philo of Alexandria interprets Genesis as an allegorical story in the 1st Century AD. Allegorical interpretation was present from the beginning of the Christian church. Likely because it was how many of these stories were understood in the Jewish temple.

So the Bible now has disclaimer.

Ah, the Bible. Just parts of it are applicable. Ignore the rest. But you have to sort thru the shitty verbiage to figure what is supposed to be real and what is metaphorical or mystical, or whatever those screwy monks crafted, and the arbiters dictated.

Foolishness with a gullible audience looking for explanations, which at that time none were available since science and knowledge had not developed yet. In fact, science and the pursuit of knowledge was impeded by religion those centuries ago, creating a threat. Much like since and now.

“Religion is regarded by the ignorant as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.”

― Seneca

Christianity is simply another iteration of a religion. Nothing more. Worshipping a different figure. It doesn't harm anyone as long as you don't launch Crusades or burn witches. Or form "Christian supremist groups" to validate extremist and/or racial movements or attacks.

He gave us dominion, but we destroy and don’t live and harvest in balance. Look at most people’s bodies… supposed to be a temple??? Men are polluting and overeating… not God

Can you guys agree that IF there's a permanent Heaven or Hell awaiting us after death, that the stakes for each human being are immense?

Yes. Thou shalt not gay is pretty clear. It's there right next to "thou shalt not wear cotton/poly blends".
I've always felt there is a bit of a bait and switch by god in this. First he is like here are the 10 rules you need to follow and if you follow these we are good. So everybody is like awesome. 10 things pretty simple. Then he comes back and says I have a few addendums a whole chapter really of other rules you need to follow or you will contaminate the land.

Can you agree that if I made up a "religion" and said if you don't give me 50% of your earnings every year you will spend eternity being tortured, theoretically the "stakes are immense" but you still wouldn't give it any serious thought?

I think it's generally accepted that inbreeding was central to populating the earth from a biblical perspective.

Really, it started with Adam and Eve, and restarted with Noah's family. So at this point we're all descendents of Noah, and a product of inbreds.

Now go off into the world ye inbred HORGOATs and make merry!

Most evangelicals - at least the ones I see on TV - have chosen to ignore pretty much everything Jesus said about how people should treat each other.

So much easier to be "faithful" if you don't actually have to change your behavior.

Just accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and you're guaranteed admission. No need to stop beating your wife, stop being a racist, stop exploiting your employees, stop damaging the environment....

In real life, there was an awful lot of inbreeding in mankind's early history.

I've forgotten the details, but as I understand it, there may have been a period in our past when the number of breeding humans fell below a pretty low number. A thousand comes to mind, in just a few pockets of early humans.

Now you can still get zillions of combinations with that few breeders, but you have to wonder how much genetic diversity was lost during that die-back.

Googling . . . . .
