Raising chickens

You can add TOO much manure to a garden...

There's a lot to consider. We've had 5-7 for a few years now. It's definitely nice to have a steady supply of eggs with six kids in the house. And it's not a ton of work, once you get things set up. Our setup is janky but works and a lot was done manually. We get the eggs, free food waste disposals, and compost for the gardens.

That said, if you're strictly going into it to save on eggs (or just to have better eggs), you're better off browsing local forums to find someone nearby who's up and running, IMO. They can work if you're doing a whole homesteading thing. Just by themselves you're at best breaking even with feed and time.
Sure, but just mix the manure directly into the compost and dilute it and it won't burn your plants.

Hilarious reading some posters thinking this is a good idea.

The obsession with rationalizing every stupid thing this WH says and does and trying to convince themselves it's a good idea.

This country is so fvcked.
Just a statement that shows just how jaded you are.

I have 11 chickens and a DIY coop with exterior nesting boxes accessed by a lid. We get 8-10 eggs a day for three people, so we sell the extras to neighbors or give them away to friends. It covers our feed bill, nesting pads, and coop bedding. As a result we have as many "free" fresh, organic eggs as we can eat.

Pretty easy if you have an automatic door and automatic feeders. We can go out of town for a weekend, but have a neighbor clear out the nesting boxes and check on them if we will be away longer. A neighbor is usually happy to help for whatever eggs are in the boxes.

It's also nice to not have refrigerate them and that they last for several weeks longer than store bought eggs. Overall, I like it and would recommend it if you have the proper space and time.

How soon before the WH suggests raising a few hogs and a cow when pork and beef get more costly?

Hell, at this pace, lawnmower businesses are gonna be asking for a subsidy to cover lost sales!

The Radical Right truly is a cult.

How is raising your own food responsibly and ethically a bad thing.

If anything we need more backyard or small farmers to buy from.

Nothing wrong when you live on a small acreage, for example.

But when you have a neighbor's property 20' from a property line, that's a great way to start a feud.
This whole debate arose because the Trump campaign made a campaign promise they knew they couldn't fulfill.
They only brought it up so they could point a finger at Biden.
Everyone but the numpties knew the bird flu was the root cause.
And now the ridiculous tariff/trade war eliminates easing the problem with imports from Canada/Mexico.
I swear you people are nothing but trolls.

Paraphrasing Freud, sometimes a chicken is just a chicken.

I have a friend who recently browbeat me for making a sad “womp, womp” trombone sound when another friend dropped his food at a gathering. Apparently Trump or Vance recently made the same sound publicly and that means that I am now a nazi sympathizer because I made a similar dumb joke.

People, Trump sucks big time, don’t let him turn you into a worse person.

There are ways to de-escalate conflict with neighbors if that were to happen. Or, OP could talk to his neighbor before putting up a coop.

Keep grasping since I just pawned your ass.

Brooke Rollins, Secretary of Ag.

You cult members are so incredibly loyal. Can't reason for yourselves.
Lol.

So your claim is that all of the people who have been raising chickens since long before last week are raising chickens because of something Brooke Rollins didn’t say until last week.

You should maybe take a minute to ponder just how fvcking stupid you sound.

You know damn well what I said.
Take your phone and then post a picture of your backyard chicken farm if you really believe it is a good plan.
You won't cause you don't.

Indeed, it was common practice until, say the 40s/50s range, for most homes to have a small garden and having a couple chickens was common, too. It's amazing how quickly we went from that to thinking only an insane off-gridder would have a tomato plant.

ok, but not really.
My friends have had chickens for at least 15 years. One family has backyard chickens. The rest have more land. At least five different people here, four in CT, 3 in AL, ….

So, really. Also most of those people also grow their own veggies, some are beekeepers.

Not everyone lives in a vacuum.
