The alumni at the University of Iowa are definitely not happy with the decision to drop 4 teams. In fact, they are challenging the Athletic Director and the President of the University to keep the programs. In one day, the alumni raised $1.65M. As of day 4, they are up to $1.9M. They are trying to build a model that all universities around the country can use to sustain all Olympic sports. They have a blueprint of a model that allows Olympic Sport Teams to continue without the financial support of the Athletic Department. They plan to present this idea to the Governor of Iowa. Please note, if the Athletic Director still says no to this option, they will lose any opportunity to get any of the money raised…and of course this will not build goodwill with the 300-400+ alumni that are campaigning hard to save the teams. This should be an interesting battle. The fight is definitely not over!

Hello Hawkeye Family and Friends,
We have exciting updates on behalf of the Save Hawkeye Sports Pledge Campaign; we are embarking on day four and have raised over 1.9 Million to help negate current economic crisis which necessitated the cutting of these historic programs. Our team has the blueprint of a model that will allows olympic sport teams to thrive without the financial support of the Athletic Department. We plan to present our business model to Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds. We think Iowa should be the model for a sustainable AND successful athletic program.
Our efforts so far have included extensive PR and media coverage, political and legislative campaign, letter/appeal to the Board of Regents, and direct dialogue with University President, Bruce Harreld and Athletic Director, Gary Barta. We wanted to share a great article in Sports Illustrated by Pat Forde; we it reminds us who were are fighting for- the student-athletes and future Hawkeyes. Please see the article below for an update and/or click here for compiled list of articles since the announcement on August 21st. With much more to come still to come- please follow our social media platforms to stay up to date!
Our plan is built around decreased expenses and increased revenues with a significant portion from private donors. Please visit and share http://www.savehawkeyesports.com and make a pledge to bring Hawkeye Sports back. We want to be clear that this is a pledge and you will only be asked for a donation should the University reinstate our teams.
Not only will your support give the current team a chance to remain a Hawkeye, it will allow every young athlete with the goal of competing in college to keep that dream alive. This is not just about Iowa Swimming and Diving. Every Olympic sport at the college level is at risk and Iowa can be the model for how things should be.
Thank you so much for supporting this effort,

Sincerely,

Barta and Bruce addressed this. They said this happens all the time. Initial big push and they only come up with 10% of what would be needed. So unless someone steps up with $40 million in cash, gold or bitcoin it ain't happening.

If they can make it work, more power to them. But as others have pointed out, $1.9M is a drop in the bucket of what is needed.

if they're going to the governor with their problems, are they going to ask her for more taxpayers money to fund these programs?

Nice try but they might as well keep the course. Who in their right mind will want to come to Iowa and compete in any of these sports knowing they can be dropped at any time in the future. Will have a hard time competing against MAC schools..JMO

Are there any Iowa fans out there that want sports to be dropped? I doubt it. This comes down to supply and demand / money. Simple as that.

Maybe we shouldn't have overreacted as a society to that point and you would still have those sports.
If it's about the moochers I do!!!

Sick of all the entitled brats being raised these days! Pay your way and quit mooching

AWESOME!! That will pay about one year's salary/wages of the people who lost their jobs/livelihoods from the athletic department.

Mark Kaufman founded and owns athletico. Perhaps before you call him a mooch perhaps listen to what he has to say.
I'm calling the athletes moochers, that hard to figure out? If they can find people to willingly support them then great. They shouldn't be allowed to mooch off the work of other student athletes.

Absolutely, if they're willing to put their money where their mouths are, then more power to them. Unfortunately like you said they have a real uphill battle to sustain this......

I have woken up to the fact we need to cut more non-rev sports not less....or completely spin football off.

I hate to say it, but wrestling needs to be seriously looked at....schools cutting it all over the country. Better to do it before it’s too late, as it’s time will come.

Are you OK with the B1G's decision to split conference television revenues equally among the 14 schools? You think that Iowa's footprint in the B1G comes anywhere close to generating the same amount of television revenue when compared to other teams in the B1G? Isn't Iowa "taking" more from the B1G coffers than it is "putting" in?

EDIT: Here's some numbers to consider: https://www.tvb.org/Portals/0/media/file/PoliticalMedia/Cable_UEs_by_State.pdf

Although those numbers are from 2017, those numbers certainly make clear that Iowa leads only Nebraska in the B1G as far as number of television watching households are concerned. Maybe all of the other schools which bring a bigger piece of the television revenue "pie" to the B1G should be complaining about those schools who contribute far less.

I disagree with wrestling completely simply because of the strength of the state of Iowa's high school and club wrestling programs. The new Big Game Wrestling Club facility in North Liberty is impressive and shows the demand for the sport here.

We've interviewed Vickie Nauman twice and she is brilliant. She feels that the Olympic college sports need a new model to stay alive. The football programs paying for all the sports programs just is not sustainable. It is possible that a new day is dawning and she points to the University of Texas as a new model for funding the non revenue sports. It depends largely on private donations and not just on the Universities themselves.

No way you cut wrestling. Way too many people go to the meets and Iowa high school and youth wrestling is strong. Other schools are because they don’t have the support like the Hawks do.

They agreed to this communistic approach way back in the day. Yes, thanks for the big boys who draw more eyeballs. Iowa is just a peon flyover state. Always will be. Is what it is bro. we are trying to be the Packers or Steelers of NCAA football. We need to market nationwide. America's team! hawaii loved Hayden Fry. Every native person who commented on my tiger hawk when there was like I loved Hayden Fry.

Horrible comparison. What does women's swimming bring to Iowa football?

The b1g split is like the pros, sure you could just have New York la chicago and a couple other cities and forget everyone else, but everyone is needed to make the sports what they are. Otherwise you're throwing tons of cash away by passing on the Milwaukee cincinattis etc of the country.

But sure Iowa is "taking "more from tv revenue than they generate....they also contribute plenty unlike the moochers that do nothing to contribute.

Do you think the b1g should be like the lil 12 and let everyone do whatever tv wise? You think that would be better for the conference? You can't actually believe that.....

And you're the type of dbag making these kids think they're all entitled to things they aren't. Keep ruining the country dumbass scumbag

You are the only school I know with $142 million in AD income that is dropping sports. Something sure seems to be out of whack in your athletic budget.

Are you this dumb? We lost at least $40 million in ticket revenue. And will lose millions on tv revenue. You have to be stupid not to get it. You didn't see Iowa State and Minnesota cutting stuff?

Yeah almost like the athletic dept lost millions in lawsuits....

Want to compare the relative success of student athletes in olympic sports after college to the general student population?

Mark Kaufman is leading the charge to help save those sports. He sounded athletico.

Ron Kaminski is also involved. He owns HBS engineering.

Real mooches.

Like I said you are a sxumbag

And what are you talking about "general population", you think someone is more important because they're a good swimmer? Lmfao! Give the money to smart people that will benefit mankind bit athletes if sports people don't care about.

You truly are not smart person.

The kids in those sports usually are the smart kids and go on to do really good things like go to medical school or start businesses. They also tend to have little to no scholarship money from the athletic department.

You sound like a bitter loser

Well good, they'll have academic scholarships and go still swim at the YMCA. So why the fuss?
You sound much less intelligent than those brilliant athletes.

They might for now but given economic circumstances other schools might start cutting similar programs as well.

Personally, I think that the B1G model works just fine.

That written, I thought that this was a dollars/cents discussion. There can be no question that schools like PSU, OSU, Rutgers (yes . . . Rutgers) bring vastly more to the B1G's television revenue coffers than does Iowa - yet Iowa takes 1/14th of those revenues. When all is said and done, Iowa's athletic department revenues are far more dependent upon the other schools in the conference than vice versa.

If "mooching" is the standard, I trust that you are in favor of eliminating all intercollegiate sports at the University of Iowa with the exception of football and men's basketball. Those are the only two self-supportive programs.
