Realistic Prediction for next year

CJ is a mature, competitive, leader... No one else I would want to bring Iowa back.

If he just had some talent at WR...who could also catch a ball!
Jerminic Smith excites me, could be a speed demon on the outside. We return Vandeburg and Kittle at TE. I think we'll be just fine.

I think we're back in Pasedena honestly...a lot of leadership coming back
Are you kidding, the Rose is not ever choosing Iowa over any other team ever again after that performance. Hawks looked like a D3 team out there , Stanford stopped trying to score in the 2nd quarter ! the 2nd quarter! Embarrassing

I saw millions of dollars of Iowa money sitting in the stands...Iowa will be invited again...it isn't about competitive games...

I think we could win the west again but we will most likely have to play tOSU in the title game. Our history against the buckeyes is less than sparkling.

I'm hoping we don't need another on campus school shooting to inspire us to win like happened many years back the week before Iowa went in to Columbus to win there. It seems like there are a lot of them these days, but hoping we have something better to motivate us to win than that.

I had us going 9-3 (5-3) with a bowl game loss 9-4 this year. I'm sticking with that for next year too. 9-3 (6-3) bowl loss 9-4 another good year.

awBison - don't flatter yourself - NDSU is no Stanford. Hell, living in southern MN, I see quite a few Mankato State games and they could give your Bison a game!

A returning, experienced QB is always a good thing...and a good leader to boot...who else would you want as a team leader to bring this new team out of the darkness of this Black Hole of a Rose Bowl?

It should be interesting...hopefully surgery will heal CJ in time, if needed. He needs his mobility or becomes a sitting duck against talented defensive lines.
This is the first I've heard about surgery, what is he having it on ?

I'm thinking somewhere around 9-3 next year. Michigan, Nebraska, and another loss is most likely. I will say Holiday Bowl against someone like Washington.

Above all, I really want a bowl win next year. It has been six years and several blowouts. Ugh.

Ive seen this story before so I will say 8-4 (5-3 in BT)
There are 9 conf games next year ;).
It's obviously impossible to say. Will we get King and Ott back? Will CJ get injured? If he does, does anyone step up behind him? Does Wisconsin find a decent QB, does Armstrong throw a millions ints again? Will Iowa show truly be ready to play each game or will they play to their opponents ability? Etc....

Anyhow my random guess will be 9-3. I don't see how they don't win AT LEAST 7 though.

If you look at this year, we probably lose to nebraska if armstrong doesn't make a bunch of horrible choices, we probably lose to wisconsin if they don't have the freak fumble, we go to OT against pitt if we don't get the 57 yarder, we might even lose to Indiana with their back up qb if their receivers weren't wearing vaseline gloves.

I have not heard he "needs" surgery, nor am I a physician...but I do know, anecdotally, that some such injuries will only be corrected by surgery...hoping he can heal without it of course.

11-1 if everyone comes back plus Ott. But, realist in myself says 9-3. Iowa got a lot of good bounces in their favor. Onside kick recovered against Indy for one and the fumble recover against Nebby for starters.

I think either way Cj will be ready to go to start next year. Bigger question is will he stay healthy or will he have to constantly sacrifice himself to pick us up a W.

...and the fumble recovery against wisky too.

I think 10 wins is realistic for the team that returns (including King, but regardless of Ott)...should win every pre-conference game handily, and 7-2 to either win or tie in the B1Gw.

The Iowa and MSU games will make it very difficult for Big 10 teams (not named OSU) to make it to the CFP if they are in that 5-7 range.

It is also about competitive games, how many people turned this game off at the half or before? TV advertising $$ are a huge factor.

Good point! I think the RB knows that if the games aren't usually close that it could destroy the tradition (it already dropped a notch when they didn't have OSU- Oregon play in the "rose bowl" game) at least imo.
Also, while there were millions of Iowa dollars spent on the game...only a small portion went to the RB. Flight and hotel were much more than the game ticket.

I'd say 9-3 or so, with a decent chance to win the west. Hopefully the returning guys stay as close-knit as this year's group, use the Rose Bowl debacle to fuel them in the off-season, and come back next fall ready to kick some tail.

I'm expecting around 8-4 or 9-3. Win one they should lose, lose one they should win. Games that concern me are ISU (as always), Northwestern, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan.

I think they could also just as well finished 7-5 or 12-0. It depends how the ball bounces. Iowa has a very good team returning, but that can mean squat when the ball kicks off. Otherwise, I'm hoping for another successful year and hoping for another trip to the Rose.

Way to take a definitive stand.

Do you want to know what I think of as realistic? I think it's a crap shoot.

In 2010 Iowa was returning its QB from an Orange Bowl win, 7-5. In 2005 Iowa was returning its QB after a Capital One Bowl win, 7-4.

Like I said, I think it will be around 8 to 9 wins. But I won't be surprised if it's 7.

So yeah, there's my definitive stand.

Okay, so definitely under 10 wins?

To me that's not meeting expectations...for next year.

From the game I saw it is obvious you're no Stanford either.
I wouldn't want to be Stanford.

No flattery needed though. The record speaks for itself. All this talk from a team that could barely take out the gophers this year 40-35 on home turf. Last time we played them we won by 13 in their house and that 13 points didn't accurately reflect how we dominated that game. We beat them the game before that too. If you want to have some real fun, watch the Iowa State NDSU game. If I recall correctly we scored 34 straight unanswered points and held them scoreless the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters. The crowd was leaving because it wasn't even competative.

We could win and we could lose our game with you. I'm certainly not going to say we'll win(unless I'm just messing with you). I know you have a really good team and I know we're certainly underdogs but it is funny how some teams/fans think they're so much better than everyone else when they may very well not be. Just like you thinking an FCS team can't possibly compete at all even though they continually hand FBS teams losses. I see this same crap year after year. It gets old.

Well, don't worry awBison - after all existing B10 contracts play out, no Big 10 teams will be allowed to play little FCS teams, so NDSU can once again be the bully of their elementary school playground. :)

Oh I'm not worried at all about our game with you guys. We've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. I'm much more concerned with our upcoming game with JSU.

We're definitely not the only good team at the FCS level. UNI, JSU, and a few others have been good too. Many of our wins are hard fought as evidenced by our two losses to what some call bad teams this year. If we've been the bullies at any elementary school playground it's been at the same elementary playground you've been bullying this year as we haven't lost at that playground a single time in our last 5 games.

NDSU is pretty unlikely to have a player of McCafferty's caliber.

Now how am I supposed to answer that? What "caliber" are you measuring by?
We've had quite a few players and coaches go to very high levels in football.

I'm fully expecting that our QB will be playing in the NFL. We've got a former running back
currently playing for the Packers and this guy hasn't done too badly for himself either:

Those are some example from really recent players. I could go on with quite a few more but do you're own research if you're interested. Those are just a few examples.

Those teams had some key losses on the defense though that really hampered them. Losing the linebackers made the 2010 defense weak and unable to stop anybody on third down. The play where a freshmen James Morris looked like he was tied to concrete as Terelle Pryor ran past him like he was standing still on like 3rd and 15 still pisses me off.

Outside of Austin Blythe and Desmond King (if he goes to the NFL) I'm not sure they lose anybody that can't be replaced. All of our linebackers will be back and we should be better on the defensive line with an extra year of experience. I like our chances next year.

This starts a run like we saw in 2002-2004. Three consecutive top 10 finishes, then Kirk retires

All I know we better improve a lot in the trenches. We need an upgrade on the OL in terms of size and physicality to be able to beat the top 15/20 caliber teams. Pass protection was a joke all season and run blocking fell apart when the DLine quality improved the last couple of games.

On the DL we have to be able to generate a pass rush with 4 guys again. I do not want to hear about Ott because that's a long shot to get him back and that's one guy who could go down with an injury again. We need multiple guys. We also need to create some penetration in the backfield from the interior. To few TFLs down the stretch. Lots of 2-4 yard gains on plays that should have been stopped for no gain. Stanford turned a bunch of plays for little to no gain into big plays. MSU cranked out an 80 yard drive on should have been nothing runs.

I'm talking about total game changer, best player in the country caliber.

11-1 with the loss to Michigan.

Could be a lot like this season. It is good to be in the MAC errrrr Big Ten West.
