I tended to remember that we won the game because of our outstanding pressure D the 2nd half. Rebounding wasn't a big thought and pretty much a push. The Hawks did an excellent job in large part due to Jok having a game high 9 and Mike grabbing 7.

If we don't get that kind of a team focus and result off the boards it will be a long night for Hawk fans. Yes we need to D up, shoot three's well, and get to the line; but the elephant in the room is competing off the glass.

I agree Mazda. The thing I got out of PD's game v Rutgers was how much they focused getting rebounds. I think Painter realizes the best way for PD to win in IC is pounding us on the boards. Rutgers was practice. The boys better be ready.

Woody has to stay out of foul trouble against Purdue in
order for Iowa to win. Wagner will probably get some
serious minutes of action for the Hawkeyes.

I agree Wagner will need to help set an aggressive attitude for the bench. Those guys have to battle.

It will take a team effort, just like the first game at Purdue. With Purdue's bigs, it is critical to box out on the defensive end. Woody does that better than anyone we have, so it will help if he can stay out of foul trouble. This is a game where we do NOT want the officials to "let them play."

This is a huge game. Sweeps of Purdue and Michigan State give us a little main for error. I think we'll compete at Maryland but batting a hot shooting night I don't see us winning there but the schedule gets a little easier after. This has been a bitch of a front loaded schedule and to go 7-0 with sweeps of Purdue and Michigan State would be absolutely enormous.

Agree that woody is critical in this game. He has got to stay on the floor. This is a huge game.

I hope Fran has the Hawks come out in their 3/4 pressure from the opening tip. He can take it off after a bit, but I think it's important to disrupt Purdue immediately. Don't let them ever get comfortable in their offense. Iowa needs to play the whole 40 minutes with the intensity they showed in the second half at West Lafayette.

I just think the defensive pressure gets our guys going, jump starts Iowa's offense, and generally helps avoid a slow start. Fran has been masterful at mixing his defenses this year, and that needs to continue on Sunday.

After Thursday's workout at Rutgers, I think the Hawkeyes will be ready to sweep PU in front of an SRO and, hopefully, rowdy Iowa crowd.

Agree Woodbury is critical for Iowa to win again, but in the first meeting he only played 25 minutes. They were all quality and almost singularly defensive as the Boilers kept rotating their two 7-foot centers in. Coach McCaffery did a masterful job in rotating subs in for Adam as he was giving max effort and exhausted when he would come out. Don't have the box score in front of me, but if I remember correctly Wagner only saw 4-5 minutes in the first meeting. It was Uhl and Baer who had strong second halves and got most of the court time during the comeback.

I'm friends with one of Purdue's assistants. It sounds like they are expecting, and have a game plan to adjust for, Iowa's half court trap. Their inability to get into their offense and feed their posts is what eventually lost them the first meeting as Iowa scored 22 points off Purdue's turnovers. Gessell and Clemmons have shown they can play strong defense. Jok's play in that 1-2-2 press was the big difference at Mackey Arena. Iowa's coaches have challenged him to raise his play to that level again in the rematch.

Both teams are scoring in the high 70's in Big Ten play. At the same time this will likely be as physical and bruising of a game as Iowa will play all season and wouldn't be surprised if the winner only reaches 68-70 points--much like the first meeting. Should be a fun game to watch.

21-14 Purdue the first half. Uthoff, Jok, and Cemmons all without a board.
