Recovering from a loss like that is difficult. See Big Ten Championship in 2015.

It's possible this game leads to a let down in the next week, but long term this was a great experience for the younger Hawkeyes like Stanley, Jackson, Epenesa, ISM, IKM, Fant, Hockenson, Hooker, Rugamba, etc. It will help them the next time they play a big game. And it should help the team believe that they belong and can still do big things this year and in years to come. Wadley, what a playmaker.

History has proven lately that veteran Iowa teams don't fare well. It's the seasons that we sneak up. A huge oppurunity was lost today.

I sure don't like seeing MSU get blown out right now!
I think they're overhyped again, but we better come ready to play!

I have to admit being worried about responding on the road after such a tough loss. Having guys like Wadley and Jewell as leaders on the team should help the team get focused again. Wadley, once again proving he's a playmaker against anyone and Jewel, damn, to have to match up against easily the best player in college football this year, he did one hell of a job keeping Iowa in the game.

Well the good news is that Iowa's team is pretty mixed this year, a really unusual occurrence under Ferentz. There's plenty of veteran players, but also a lot of young talent. I'm thinking more about the future than the past, but history also shows that young players -- on any team! -- benefit from being in huge stakes games and playing tense, back and forth, nail-biters. If they perform well or at least decent, anyway. I thought Iowa's young guys played a big part in Iowa being in a position to win the game. That bodes well for the future, this season and beyond.

Completely agree -- don't buy that losing a close game helps for future close games.

Bend no break strategy worked for 59:56, but not the final play.

When other team knows no blitz is coming in a less than 2 minute drill, that helps.

Last year vs Minnesota, a far lesser team drove length of field at the end, but their QB wasn't good enough to make a play -- McSorley was.

It was a hell of a defensive effort against possibly the best (or at least top 5) offense in the country. Other than maybe Michigan, I don't think anyone else in the B10 will be able to hold them to 21 points for a full game. Hell, Iowa held them to 15 points for 59:56. That ball doesn't get tipped on third down and the PSU guy makes the catch and gets tackled? The game might have been over. Every inch counted in this game.

I think the long-term impact will be good, but I am worried about next week and, if there is a let down, if they can get momentum back the other way after that.

I don't see this necessarily translating to some over arching theme for the rest of the season. In either direction. It was a weird game where the offensive statistics overwhelmingly favored psu, but several big stops and key plays broke Iowa's way to keep them in it. There will almost certainly not be another game like that all season. It was the classic eerie Iowa night game against a highly ranked opponent effect. It exits in its own unique twilight zone.

Or better yet-walk on tryouts are in the spring. I expect you to show up and show our defense how to finish a game.
Again, you first. I don't have any eligibility left.

I'd also rather let you show our defense how to finish games. You seem invested enough in arguing with me about this, so you must have some answers. Like I said............you first.

I doubt you ever used any of your eligibility. Flippy cup doesn't count.

Typical passive aggressive ass-no answers just indictments. Move on troll.

Well, in a sense yeah the Ohio State game won't be like tonight's game......in that we lost tonight.

No, I think I'll stay right here....parent. And if you're not, or you're not a former player then you can get off your pretend high horse, thinking that you're taking out your frustration on some internet fan who made a "disparaging" comment about the team that you didn't like.

Btw, I like how you try to end the argument while calling me passive-aggressive without giving any answers. You replied to my original comment because of something you didn't like, guy. You can walk away if you want, saying "derp I'll be the bigger man here" but again, you replied to my comment. You started this conversation. Don't start it if you don't like that you can't f***ing finish it. :)

I can't say I agree with those comparing last night's loss to 2010, or other times the defense has "failed to close."

That 2010 defense (and entire team) had extremely high expectations, and was inexplicably gassed by the 4th quarter every game. Looked like the entire defensive line ran a marathon at halftime. I didn't get that sense last night. It was more like the BTCG, I guess; a desperate offense in 4-down territory the entire drive was able to do just enough. It was unreal that the last pass got through to the back of the end zone. Just the way sports go. Can't win 'em all.

This team has certainly left me feeling let down over the years, but not last night. I thought they played their hearts out.

As far as recovering from this game, I guess time will tell. I was concerned, win or lose. I was hoping Mich St would also be in a close, emotional game, but the blowout might make it easier for them to turn the page. Definitely gut-check time. I think the Hawks can still win the division, but not if they drop one in East Lansing.

Defense can't finish games. They can put us in a position to win, but they can't finish themselves.

How many times in the last decade? Sh** got old when it first started.

I don't know. I think this one is different than past failures on the last drive. I mean, I can't remember the last time Iowa's D -- or anyone's D -- was on the field for 99 plays. I blame Iowa's offense for the defenses second half difficulties--they'd played a full game worth of snaps in the first half alone and Iowa's offense went three and out CONSTANTLY! No, Iowa's offense gets the blame for this loss, not the defense. It took the O way too long to get into the game (three quarters, to be exact). Hopefully the O will figure out how to open up the offense in the FIRST HALF instead of finally handing Stanley the ball to find receivers (including Wadley) against these 8 and 9 man boxes. Maybe they still had reservations because it was only his fourth game, but Iowa needs to become a pass-first team until teams start playing off the line of scrimmage. Stanley is good enough to make them pay. Use him that way!

A key difference btw this game and '15 is this game wasn't the Big Ten playoff with a spot in the national playoff on the line. The West division, and ultimately conference playoff are still attainable at this point. We also have one week to wait for the next game, not a month.

I do agree it's worrisome to have to bounce back against an angry team on the road, I think it might actually be easier than bouncing back from the '15 loss.
