Shocked we aren’t ranked?

already haunts us all. It was a give-away up epic proportions. With ISU schedule, they will probably finish 11-1, 10-2 at the worst and most likely a lower ranked playoff team. Iowa had'em at home on the ropes and in typical Iowa fashion, let'em hang around with asinine coaching decisions from the one- yard line, not once, but twice!
Not sure why you are concerned about being ranked? OSU next anyway.
The one thing not talked about much with the ISU game was that typically they have decent skill players, but Iowa dominates in the trenches. In the first half, that seemed to be playing out again in the trenches. In the second half, I was surprised at the difference. ISU's defensive line had an advantage against the Iowa OL, and the ISU )-line vs. IA defensive line was a draw to even slight advantage Iowa State. That was something I haven't seen in recent years especially the latter.

I certainly hope you’re right about Iowa State but I think you’re insane

Utah rolled into Stillwater and without their starting QB they throttled Okie St. Coach Kyle W is a very very good coach and they beat top teams a lot. ISU is not great against the run. We lost to them because Cade and the WRs were off and our defense gave up a big play, and our coach went for 2 pts without any need or reason to

Iowa State is a good run defense team. Have been for years. Kaleb Johnson is really good.

Iowa's resume won't stack up. Even at 10-2 they will have yet again for the 5th year in a row ZERO impressive wins.

That's why the ISU game is so crucial, beat them and compete with OSU and we have a very good shot
I know we need something to talk about ......but in all seriousness, does anyone pondering whether a 10-2 Iowa team has a shot at the playoff, honestly think this Iowa team has a >1% chance at going 10-2?

In the immortal words of the There's Something About Mary hitchhiker,

"Step into my office"

Ted: "Why."

"Because you're %@*&-ing fired!"

And I dont even think if Iowa goes 10-2 they would get picked for the playoffs unless, UNLESS, for some reason that record gets them into the Big Champ game and they would somehow win it.

I think most of Iowa's schedule is full of avg to above avg teams but not a really tough schedule.

Lots of key games remaining. Oregon/Michigan/OSU all play each other. USC has a pretty favorable schedule.

After thinking about it and looking at other teams aka like Indiana etc playing lights out and Illinois playing awesome I can see a bit but I do think we are once again underrated and underestimated through 4 games as we lost by 1 damn point but hell, it counts and we lost. I just hope that one point loss to ISU doesn’t come back to haunt us is all.

Go Hawks
We lost to a middle school, Iowa St. That should eliminate us from being ranked regardless of what happens the rest of the way.

With that weak conference schedule ... the record will be a fraud, again. Then lose to some 8-5 SEC team, 35-0, in some worthless bowl.
Imagine playing Michigan's schedule or UCLA's. KF would never do that, he doesn't want to travel, or recruit players that could play that type of schedule.

Eventually we will get a very tough schedule. Kirk may or may not be here, but I have a feeling it will be brutal especially if you get heavy hitters early on when teams aren’t depleted with injuries. It won’t be like the Big Ten West where you may have 2 juggernauts in a “hard year”. You could get up getting 4 or 5

Iowa is better than Indiana, so you should probably replace them at the #26-#27 spot in the rankings. I think an Illinois-Iowa game would have been very entertaining this season. Do you play IU? I would expect you to win that game.

They only lose 1 conference game they would likely be in the BTCG.
I agree and was initially holding onto hope for the same thing. But with the way we play - keeping every game close and on a razor’s edge - I just cannot see a scenario where 1) Hawks keep it respectable against OSU and 2) don’t lose another game (that they probably shouldn’t lose).

Just not sure there’s a path where Iowa will be considered a top 3 team in this new BIG with OSU, Oregon, Penn St, USC and possibly Michigan if Mich only other loss is against OSU. Even tho Mich got manhandled by TX, that will be considered forgivable whereas there is no world where a loss to ISU is forgiven.

Houston is awful. The Big 12 is a weak, weak conference.
Which is why I said they need to throttle them. They are probably not going to run the table, but they need to hammer the crap out of the bad teams and keep bringing the intensity. Faster the intensity falls off, the faster they are going to lose and fall out of the rankings.

We lost to traditionally bad Iowa State and we beat an over hyped Minnesota. There is no reason for Iowa to be ranked. And we won’t be ranked for quite a while. Maybe if we keep it close with O$u and manage to not drop another game, we can sneak into the top 25 before UNL. Unfortunately, we won’t have a signature win the entire season.
When can we end that meaningless annual football game with Iowa State? I do not see how it ever benefits us when we win and always is way worse if we lose.

If Iowa State makes the expanded playoffs before Iowa this board will be……..something
It definitely will.

Agree - most if it but Michigan isn’t that good as they played an overrated USC team that will probably lose to Minny in the next few weeks

Their conference isn’t nearly as tough without Oklahoma and Texas anymore. I think their chances are much better now.
I understand that. Point still stands. ISU always loses a few games a year they shouldn't. They're not uber talented amongst their peers. 9 wins is their ceiling even in a weakened conference.

How long of a time frame we talking about here? I think they can have more than 9 wins in the regular season. Go back 20 years, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Missouri were replaced with Arizona, Arizona St, Utah, BYU, Cincinatti, Central Florida, Houston.

I like their chances a lot better now, especially since recently they have been close to the ceiling you’ve set for them. They’ve upgraded facilities, I’m not sure their fan base has been larger, they have name recognition with as many guys as they have succeeding in the NFL.

I would say their trajectory is trending positive.

That isn't happening. It's ISU. They don't win conference championships, which is what it would take to get in for that conference.
To clarify, I was NOT implying they will make playoffs, only what it would be like IF they did.

Credit the new OL coach Clanton…stole him from UNI. Guy is fantastic.

Their entire history lol. I agree with you, it is much easier but I still think they lose at least 2-3 games in conference.

Can they, yes. Will they, no.

The onus is on them. They control their own destiny, at least, moreso than Iowa does at this point.

I understood. It would be demoralizing for me if it did. Alas, they beat us so if they did make it before us, so be it. We had our chance and didn't come through when it mattered.

This Houston team that Iowa State is supposed to clobber this weekend played Oklahoma to a 16-12 loss just a few Saturdays ago. Their ugly loss to Cincinnati last Saturday was one where anything that could go wrong did. Fumbles, interceptions, penalties, you name it.

I doubt Houston could play that poorly two weeks in a row. They’re at home this week and I expect a much stiffer challenge.

It would benefit Iowa if the Cyclones didn’t stumble too often as the season plays out.

I think over the past 20 years they’ve had teams that could’ve won 10 games. They just kept running into a Texas but mostly Oklahoma, which face it we wouldn’t have beaten most years either.

I think Rocco gets lured away.
Campbell...who knows. But if Campbell stays, Rocco is going nowhere. It would take a Texas-Ohio State-USC level money offer to steal him...and those schools will have much more "highly sought after" targets than Rocco. He's very good, but he's not elite in the way those types of schools are willing to open the bank for. I worry more about losing a DL/OL...those guys have lots of suitors and teams will pay a premium even for a "very good...not great" player at those positions. ISU...like Iowa...can't afford to chunk a million bucks out an OL/DL to keep them...and there are a few schools that WILL pay that.
