Refs

No home court advantage to be sure. For those few minutes when the game got tight the officials had swallowed their whistles. Nebraska is bad and they commit a ton of fouls. Not many were called.

Boys this is the part of the season where the officiating gets really tough for Iowa.

Absolutely. We will be playing 8 vs 5 every game from now on.

If anybody watched Duke-Carolina—Ted Valentine should not be allowed to ref any game at any level. He’s just so bad.

Did watch it and he cost Carolina the game. They couldn’t make free throws and made some dumb decisions but that no call on the foul was horrible.

Anyone get a better look at the one they called out on Joe T in the second half when he was trying to get a hustle offensive board and the crowd really reacted? I thought it was clearly off Nebraska but didn't see and they obviously didn't replay it, and of course Bardo thought it was the right call.

Dolph said he liked the call. Said it was off of Nebraska, but he was bumped by Toussaint. Bobby said he respectfully disagreed. Said it was two guys going for the ball.

Dolph said that the Hawkeye fans agreed with Bobby.

I can’t remember a single call at this point, so solidly “meh” at worst. The best team won by a couple dozen, so the refs were a non-factor.

Evelyn got away with a noticeable travel. Garza got away with a double dribble. Garza’s foul call on that rebound was suspect at best. There was a play late in the first half where Iowa (Pemsl?) had the rebound poked away and they gave the ball to Neb. Fran wasn’t too thrilled with call. From the TV, looked like Iowa had a beef.

Not really much of a game at any point except a few minutes late in the first half. Games like this, the refs are hardly noticed.

Curious what you’re getting at here. Are you saying this is when B1g refs allow a lot of contact late in the season. Thus working against an offensive minded team like Iowa? Or is it that certain refs have issues with Fran, players, or staff? Not being a dick, seriously wondering.

he is saying the refs are to balance for Iowa missing open shots

isn't he banned from reffing Iowa games? I
I meant to look it up but I think he’s kind of banned from B1G league altogether. Maybe not formally or officially banned, I honestly don’t remember. I vaguely recall some sort of press release a few years back.

I will say Ted is not as confrontational and thus not as noticeable, and I respect that he got himself in better shape—lost probably 25 pounds.

But I have twenty years easily of watching him on tv and in person make far too many games about him. AJ Guyton went to Bob Knight’s thing yesterday and we were joking before he drove over that Valentine better not be doing the game, might be too much for Knight given his current health.

Looked like the same refs that were at Lincoln when they called everything in favor of Nebraska in securing an upset....which by the way was soooo celebrated by them (Omaha World Herald devoted about 90% of paper next day on it including front page picture of Nebraska player flexing and taunting)....

they celebrated so much that they haven't won a game since then and had to take a full week off from playing anyone else prior to last night's game just to rest and prepare for Iowa....didn't help.

The Big Ten stopped scheduling him for games after the 2017-2018 season. And even during that season they cancelled some of his assignments after his run in with UNC's Joel Berry.

Its a kind of complex syndrome. First, Iowa is an unimportant program from a financial perspective. We will be competing for NCAA spots with tOSU, Wisconsin, Purdue and Indiana. The league's money people prefer each of those teams over Iowa. So the league's not eager for Iowa to displace a more valuable program.

The officials can read the jerseys. They know who is supposed to win. Some of it's subconscious and some of its conscious but the more valuable, higher profile media teams get a significant officiating advantage over Iowa as we close down the stretch. The fact that there is little done to improve officiating, and its not just Iowa, is pretty strong evidence that the conference likes the results.

There is also an element that is specifically hostile to Iowa. It goes back a long time. Lute went absolutely wild at the truly hard to believe things that officials did to Iowa. The last three games of 1981 involved officiating that no one could watch and say Iowa was not targeted. That gave Iowa a bad relationship with the officials. Lute sent film to the office weekly but nothing really changed, berated the officials on the floor, etc... There's been a sort of institutional hostility ever since. Of course Fran, doesn't take a hosing lying down and that creates conflicts. Mike Eads is a perfect example of this problem. Not a bad official but absolutely hates Iowa. Almost every Iowa game features preposterous officiating from Eads that doesn't appear in his other games.

Although the officiating has deteriorated with the growth in legal sports betting it is still nothing like 35-40 years ago. The problem will never get fixed because, in the end, the status quo exists because its the most lucrative scenario.

Its the uphill battle that makes the Hawks so loveable.
