First off shout out to acuhawk for the tickets. I can’t thank you enough. As some of you know this was my first Carver wrestling experience and we had a blast.

125- A- It’s an A- because Stickley’s Alex Meyer impression wasn’t very good. He didn’t get down enough to start. But seriously. Have to start faster than that.
133- C+ Laux looked slow and small. Didn’t take many shots and when he did he couldn’t finish. Still think he has a ways to go.
141- C Turk had no match awareness. Had him gassed about 30 seconds into the 3rd and was better on his feet.
149- A- Workmanlike. Felt like he should’ve TF this guy.
157- B Kem slowed way down in the 3rd. If it weren’t for a suicide roll by Clagon we would’ve lost the major.
165- B- Walsh isn’t his brother but he’s still good. Young fought hard and had a higher grade until the last 20 seconds when he didn’t shoot down 2.
174- A- Boring Gunther match til the 3rd. Finally starting to shoot with the lead. Good major.
184- A+ Bowman looked great. He had the best hustle on the team win or lose IMO.
197- A One of the best matches Wilcke has wrestled. He was aggressive and was always looking to score. Even looked for a couple tilts. Should have had the TF. Nice toss at the whistle too!
285- A+ exclamation point to the meet!

Thought we looked good...Head to toe aggression throughout, even in our losses. Think it was like 120 stall calls to 1. That happens when you are pushing the pace.

Kemmerer was waaaay better than a B. He worked pretty damn hard & was never let himself get out of position.
Had him at an A before the third period. He really slowed down. Maybe my expectations are too high. After thinking on it I’ll bump him up to B+. He still almost lost the major at the end.

Undercover, congrats on popping your CHA cherry. Did you have an ice cream cone?
No I was taking in the whole experience and I forgot to get one at intermission just like I forgot to get up and go pee at intermission. I didn’t wanna miss any matches because I didn’t know who was the ice cream match to plan on lol. Guess I’ll have to go back;)

125- Nice recovery. Happy the young man got a fall at home. Needs to start matches better.

133- Phil is not flashy, he battles hard though.

141- Turk learned some things to work on. He has the skills, just needs to believe and use them.

149- Keeps on plugging.

157- More strong and dynamic this year. Got a bit gassed.

165- Battled hard, was right there.

174- Gunther is a tough effort guy. Keeps improving.

184- Nice match, was better at keeping position than last time.

197- More confident and explosive this year!

285- Nice to see the body lock

Speaking of the cones, they seemed even bigger than usual tonight. Looked like almost a foot tall! Solid work out of the CHA ice cream stands tonight. A+.

Going into their senior year Chad has had a better career than his brother, Being an AA twice while Taylor didn't AA until his senior year.

Would you rather "Participation" awards?

Absolutely not. You don't find it the least bit strange that a person with a made-up username and unproven wrestling pedigree/coaching experience frantically gets on here and posts "Grades" after every meet. Wouldn't a "grades" poll/by wrestler be a better representation of the performance?

I take offense to that. I think my lack of credentials has already been made perfectly clear

Feel free to post one. I'm sure a lot of posters here would enjoy participating.

And no I'm not doing it.................don't want to "steal" YOUR idea.

I have no problem with the concept of the "grades" thread, as long as it's respectful of our guys and doesn't throw guys under the bus after a tough outing. It's nothing more than a way of clarifying fans' appraisals of each guy's performance. Of course, there's variation from one fan to another, and it makes for some f*** debate. I see no harm in it at all, as long as we're civil about it.

you could probably apply that criticism to most things posted on this board, couldn't you?

Nah, I like the variety of individual opinions and discussion. What's worse than a person with "a made-up username and unproven wrestling pedigree/coaching experience" is 50 people with "made-up usernames and unproven wrestling pedigree/coaching experience" that the fans and the guys will then take too seriously. I'll leave the coaching to TB.

A poll alleviates your concern about unproven, anonymous wrestling experience? Seriously?

Nothing wrong with grades Beldeen...unless you are an "only God can judge" type of guy. I think the underlying premise in all of this is that these guys are on a level that most of us never attained in the sport but you don't have to be Peyton Manning to know that a QB is having a sucky game or Nolan Ryan to observe that a pitcher's stuff is off. Likewise, you don't have to be Gable to know that Kemerer majoring a top ten guy is a pretty good day or a ref to know they missed an obvious call.

Agree with you. I'm really surprised that they haven't "tar and feathered" Vince Turk for not living up to their expectations.

I agree 100%. Which is why I dislike the concept of "Grades". IMO it is clear who was on and who was off. It does not help our team and it often fans the flame for those who want to be negative about an athlete. For example: The “Grades” for the Rider dual above. There is a negative comment on 9/10 wrestlers.

Insert “Participation trophy” wisecrack.

These kids are not wrestling for Iowa for a participation trophy. I am not fan of Iowa Wrestling to see our guys get participation trophies. We all want the same thing, right?

In my humble opinion we are often too negative though. If you watched the Rider dual you saw good and bad things. I prefer to focus on the good.

We have the best fans in the wrestling community. The HWC fundraising thread is an example of what we can do when we are positive. We need more of that.

Lowest grade was a C. I wouldn’t call that being overly negative. Also with a team like Rider where we win 35-6 you have to nitpick. Did everyone wrestle their best match? We can all agree that’s no so you have to nitpick. If we did the same thing to a top 10 team I think the vibe would be more “positive”. I’m not disappointed in anyone. I question maybe 2-3 decisions in matches but am overall very pleased with the outcome and the team. Let’s also mention nobody got hurt. That always makes it a good dual, win or lose.

Edit to add: when Tom Brands says the same thing about what each wrestler did wrong and where they need to learn and improve for next time are you mad that he is “negative”?

It's a sign of the times when someone is upset with "grades" on a message board. Unbelievable
