Riley Mulvey Commits to Iowa

based on the twitter video, kinnick stadium was his lead recruiter.

pretty crazy story they told about Lidell during the Big Ten championship game yesterday. He was an IL kid (that did not fly under the radar), that had a thing for OSU football. Turned the tide for him - cool story about why every kid is different, has different motives and factors as to where they land.

Woodbury 2.0 🙄

kidding. I love this get, looks like one of the more complete big men to enter the program in a long time. Good shooting stroke (the high release is eerily similar to Garza’s), good bounce, good shot blocking ability. Didn’t see much of a left hand in any of the posted videos, but I guess they aren’t definitive of anything one way or the other. Only way I’d like this more is if he wore goggles. I saw his glasses in his commitment video and really got my hopes up. Was about to be my new favorite player

Also, why the hell are there more posts about Illinois in here than Iowa’s new/future big man?
Looks like that’ll work out for us if you remember the last hawk recruit people were calling Woodbury 2.0

Welcome aboard Riley! Glad to have you with us. Coach Fran and his staff did a great job of developing Luka and they will do the same for you. The future looks bright!

You make an interesting point about credit for Luka's development. I have seen several other posts on here that give all that credit to him and his father outside of the team, with Fran and staff getting little, if any, of the credit for his development.

I see lot's of posts on here about Bigfoot as well,... just saying.

I really like Liddell as a player and his demeanor on the court. He is really good player IMO!

Luka has given credit to the Iowa staff for his development numerous times.

Yep. I wasn't debating that. Rather, I was making that point that it seems to be all or nothing as I read comments here. More often than not, it is referred to how much Frank did to develop him rather than the coaching staff. The original post I responded to was one of the most direct giving credit to Fran and staff. Just like we often hear about how a head coach has such "a great eye" for talent, when the assistants are often the ones doing all the initial work there.

I know his father has done a lot of off season work with Luka and he should be commended for that but the staff turned the lightly regarded Luka into the player he is now.

Welcome aboard Riley!

Luka might have been lightly regarded when Fran began recruiting him, but he was ranked around 118, and had some pretty good offers when he committed.

If the Iowa staff were key to Garza development than how do you explain Nunge and Woodbury?
Garza became great because he wanted to be great and he has really good coordination/skills/muscle memory.

Woodbury did improve but he never had the ceiling/potential that Luka has.

Nunge has been injured a lot (2+ years out of 4) but any fool can see how much he had improved, even with the injuries. If Iowa still had him there is a good chance they would have been a 1-seed.

I am not so sure the coaches did a lot with him. Did they spend 6 hours a day all summer every summer working on a different aspect each summer? 3 pt shot one year, footwork another year, hook shots one year. I am not saying it is the coaches fault, because they can't really control how much work a kid puts in while home in the summer.

Yeah, Jack. Logic(username doesn’t check out)wants to know, after 3 major injuries and surgeries, why you haven’t improved as much as Garza has. Derp

Good coaches put players in position to succeed. Alford and Raveling had some good talent, but the offensive execution wasn't always there. IMO Olson, Davis, and McCaffery have been more successful at Iowa because they get more talent of the players they have. Garza put in the work in and out of practice, and Fran has given him a chance to shine.

Looking forward to watching Riley, reminds me of Luka at that age. I've watched a few of his games and he has a good feel for blocking shots and affecting the game. He plays good competition, I think he's going to come in ready to play.

The Iowa staff spent a lot more time with Luka than just summers. And they gave him things to work on in the off season. You do realize this, right?

From his video, I would say Riley runs the court better than Luka does and that he is a better leaper. It looks like he has a lot of potential. Glad to have him on board. Go Hawks !

Name one you personally know they gave him to work on.
Luka has an arsenal of offensive moves he's worked on since he's been at Iowa. A lot of that came from Luka and his dad IMO. Do you remember our defense his freshman year? Many drives that ended in layups, or dunks. Offense only gets you so far. I think Fran has helped him become a better rebounder, shot blocker, and defender. A better all around player.

Woodbury developed the best he could. He had really short arms and couldn’t jump. Not everyone can be turned into an all American, your old field house experience should have taught you as much.

And I’d say Nunge has improved tremendously, he was our second leading rebounder and had a couple of key high scoring games coming off the bench. His efficiency was excellent. His problem is his health and playing behind Garza. I think he will be an all big type player next year, if he stays healthy.

I remember when Riley first came on to the Iowa recruiting radar, I was skeptical at first glance. Now nearly a year later, my expectations for him are much, much higher:

1. Really great athleticism for a kid of his stature and age. Typically guys like this are projects that reap benefits down the road. If he continues to grow, develop his strength, and improve his game he's a plug and play as a freshman IMO.

2. He's a good leaper and runs the floor well for a kid who's nearly 7 feet, that's not very commonly seen.

3. Decent handles, footwork and technique in the post, he's got a great foundation to build on there.

4. Aggressive to the hole, defends the rim very effectively and for the most part plays sound defense in that role.

5. Better shooting form than some of our current Hawkeyes, high release point, decent passer, good hands and nice touch when scoring inside. If he develops a reliable outside shot, look the hell out.

I'm going to make a fearless prediction that this kid could make a bigger impact than Luka did in his first couple of years at Iowa. Where he finishes in his career at Iowa in comparison to Luka is going to be largely up to him and the work he puts in. He appears to have a bigger upside athletically than Luka did as a recruit.

Welcome Riley, Hawkeye Nation is glad to have you onboard!

Agree with this and would add that Riley is adding muscle as he gets taller based on that side-by-side picture. His shoulders look wider, filling out into a bigger frame.

Agreed, he's got a great frame and is filling out very nicely. You can't say that for most players of his size.
