There isn't any reference to the University in this article:(Is it possible someone with the same name?

This is horrible. Apparently his father said he had head phones in and usually runs on a set of tracks that traffic always goes at his face and this time, the train was at his back.

I always tell my kids not to walk, run or drive with headphones in. Very sad deal

couple points:

1) this is very confusing; why would anybody be running on train tracks? just seems dangerous and an easy way to trip while running

2) headphones are very distracting. you can't hear what's around you when you have music blaring away. unfortunately, several people here in Minneapolis/St Paul have been hit and killed by light rail passenger trains because they had head phones on and were not paying attention when crossing intersections

I had the pleasure to teach Kyle in high school at Belleville East High School in Belleville, IL. He was a great kid and as somebody mentioned above - a very funny kid.

He was an absolute beast in high school. Our coach ran the ball almost every play - right behind Kyle. Kyle loved every second of it.

He also loved the University of Iowa. He was a Hawkeye through and and through.

I am sad to hear of his passing and my thoughts and prayers are with Kyle and his family.

Justin Jacobs, a spokesman for Union Pacific, said a westbound train struck "an adult male trespasser."

Trespasser? What a douche move by UP. I am thinking that there could have been another way to word it considering the parents just lost a 29 year old son........

He was an awesome guy and an absolute truck. He was a huge part of the Orange Bowl season.......

Yeah, "trespasser" is rough, though I suspect it was chosen to help reduce future tragedies. I can support that word for this purpose.

You are probably right, I think anyone on train tracks other than an intersection they are going to classify them that way to make sure no fault is put on the company, engineer or anyone with the train. It sucks that he is labeled that way though

I'm a railroader. You hit the nail on the head. And the crew that hit the young man will also have to live with that recurring memory for the rest of their lives. It is all about liability with railroads. I just have to wonder, since his father knew that's where he liked to run, was there any effort to dissuade him from continuing such a dangerous act? Terrible loss for such a young great young man and his family. My heart goes out to them.

Iowa's Kyle Calloway (60) hugs his mother during senior day festivities before their game against Minnesota on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. (Brian Ray/The Gazette)

Calloway started 37 of his final 38 games for the Hawkeyes from 2007-2009, including 12 in 2009 for a team that finished 11-2, No. 7 in the final rankings and won the Orange Bowl. Calloway, who played primarily right tackle in 2009, was selected second-team all-Big Ten in both 2008 and 2009. He started at guard in the Orange Bowl and was invited to the East-West Shrine Game.

In 2010, Calloway was drafted in the sixth round by the Buffalo Bills. After he was released, Calloway then moved to Arizona, where he closely followed the Iowa football program. He still had Iowa football decals on the front of his truck and an “Iowa Alum” sticker on the back window, Ed Calloway said.

“He loved it,” Ed Calloway said of his son’s time at Iowa. “He loved it, and he loved his friends.”

As the son in an Air Force family, Calloway attended three high schools in four years. He finished his high school career at Belleville (Ill.) East.

Funeral arrangements are delayed because the family is donating Kyle’s brain to study the potential effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

wow i feel horrible for his family but running on train tracks with headphones? what an incredibly risky (and, to be perfectly honest, stupid) thing to do. And how loud were those headphones that you couldn't hear a train?

this is such a bizarre story.

This is from the Gazette article from his Dad.

“The longer version is at our old house, the train on the right side of the tracks went east, and the train on the left tracks went west. Our presumption is this train was on the opposite side that he was used to so he got on to the side so the train would have been coming at him from the front. We think that he got confused because the train somehow had been slopped over and was going in a different direction that he was used to. We don’t know, we’re just assuming that’s what happened.”

Terrible thing that happened to a former Hawk but there's absolutely no reason for him to be running on those tracks. He wasn't using his common sense and he paid the price for it.
