RIP to a Cedar Rapids icon

Not the ghetto V! What will go in there? Liquor store? Payday Loan? Another Mexican restaurant?

Didn't they just put up a new building there?

Now I feel like I need to go down there and dump a 40 on her after all the booze I purchased from there when I lived a few blocks away.

Also this is 100% discrimination lol
Discrimination against unprofitable business. Who should we be outraged with? The only possible candidate I can identify is the city...and they probably don't want to fund it forever.

It's also the case that in 2024 grocery delivery is widely available. Not the case in 2001 when the city agrees to help finance the store for 20 years since HyVee knew it wasn't going to be profitable.

Closing the Hy-Vee by Allen Hospital in Waterloo also. I don’t think there is another grocery story within 10 miles of that location.

Also, you drive down the street directly to the right of Hy Vee and you used to run into the Tick Tock(sp?) Lounge. That's where I went to drink underage. If you go down the street to the left of the lot, you can sneak onto the CR Country Club's back nine.

I got into a fight in that parking lot around 1980. Junior at Washington HS.

CSB
I got pulled over in that parking lot in hs (Wash) with a Costco aisles worth of toilet paper in the backseat and trunk before tp-ing half the SE side with some buds.

Apparently driving too slow on 1st Ave is a thing.

Both Hy Vee and Fareway are about 5-6 miles from there. Not exactly close, but not 10 miles.

LOL. I used to sit out on my front lawn on first avenue next to Cottage Grove when I was in Franklin Junior High and watch the people cruise, aka slow driving, up and down all night long. My house used to be where that huge monolithic apartment building now sits next to Brucemore Mansion.

First rule of TP'ing back in the day was not to buy in your home town.

Failure on your part.

Does Cedar Rapids have any Kroger stores?

That thing is a monstrosity. Built practically on the road lol.

My grandma lived a few blocks from that Hy Vee when I was a kid (70’s - 80’s). We all called it the Ghetto Vee back then, but that area seems a lot worse to me whenever I visit CR.

Well, a crappy drive. Lots of lights and turns. Guessing people living in Denver used that HyVee also.

Huge new housing and apartment development going in close to that area. I am sure walking distance for groceries would have been a big relief for many that live there.

Hy Vee and the City of DSM just concluded “renegotiated” store hours for their “downtown” store . This store was built a few years ago with a lot of tax breaks and other financial considerations for HyVee by the City in exchange for HV to open a downtown store.
Maybe ol’#22 better check her contract with Hy Vee. ;)

HyVee ****ing sucks. Overpriced bull shit, obnoxious ****ing ads on the loud speakers, treat employees like shit, deep in bed with republicans, terrible benefits for workers, and then if you make it through all that you have to scan and bag your own groceries while the front end manager and armed security personnel stand and watch you.
