After the football team loss, it would be nice to have a competitive MBB game tonight. Our non-conference schedule, again this year, is a killer for raising enthusiasm thru November and December. It may be great for winning percentage but is meaningless in terms of interest and building excitement!! Another who cares game tonight! Beth, are you listening!

I dunno man. The problem with competitive games is that you can lose them and I can't take two in one day :). I'm looking forward to what had better be an absolute massacre.

Overall I agree though. Way too many sub-300 KenPom opponents in the non-con. These games are not exactly a thrilling product to draw in fans.

every team in the country plays these games.
Yes but at least the power conference teams usually mix them up with some TV worthy matchups. We had one (ISU).

Iowa basketball really has no interest in competing for the entertainment dollar. Low effort, low energy program. This is not the non-con schedule you want if you think you have a team worthy of a tourney run.

Iowa State scheduled no games outside of the MTE that were good.

No reason to even schedule this game. It does nothing for your resume, doesn't make the school any money and only risks injury.

Also don't think it does the team / players any good either. Not much effort req'd and if you don't kick ass, then it's a downer there too. Just pads Frans legacy win total

Hey leave them alone. I made $20 on them tonight. Got back on what I lost on the Missouri loss....

Friday the real season starts. If Hawks want to go to the tournament, they better win more than half of the remaining games. It wouldn’t hurt to take down some ranked teams along the way. Plenty of opportunities, now what do the Hawkeyes do with those opportunities??????

This post - and a lot of the posters on this site - reminds me of this bit from “Annie Hall” …

There's an old joke - um... two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of 'em says, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know; and such small portions." Well, that's essentially how I feel about life - full of loneliness, and misery, and suffering, and unhappiness, and it's all over much too quickly.

The non-conference schedule was an absolute joke at Carver, save Iowa State, They should be paying us to show up for those games.

Iowa could be playing Drake or UNI, like the women do, but no. It's too dicey for the Hawkeye men. What if they lost? LOL

Beth should DEMAND the Iowa men schedule Drake and UNI EVERY damn season. This BS of playing New Hampshire and their ilk is nuts. There is NOTHING to be gained from doing so. Absolutely nothing. Hell, schedule the best intramural team at the U of I. That would make for a more intriguing game and would save a paltry million bucks or so.

I don't know what Beth has been up to since firing Brian Ferentz, but whatever it is must be deep behind the scenes. She needs to dump the head football coach and the men's head basketball coach. She needs to vastly upgrade the men's nonconference basketball schedule by adding UNI and Drake every season. When's that renovation of Carver happening? When are they gonna get the students in the seats around the floor? So many things to do, so little time . . .

Iowa State played 6 of those teams.

Again, why do people expect Iowa to schedule some crazy way?
I think it probably comes down to the fact that Iowa probably needs wins against some middling teams to improve the tournament resume. That and it's not easy convincing fans to attend games at Carver as it is. Another problem ISU doesn't have.

Playing a cupcake during the Christmas holiday (when players haven't been playing in a competitive game for the last week or so) and right before the start of the B1G season I think is smart. Iowa was able to play for extended minutes every scholarship player in this game.

It also helps with team chemistry right before the beginning of a grueling B1G season.

Wins against teams like New Hampshire don't help the tournament resume. If anything, it is a drawback. Back when they used that RPI system, it could be "gamed" by scheduling games against teams that were, like, 150th - still easy wins but would help your RPI far more than wins against teams that were 350+ like New Hampshire. Not sure how easy it is to game the metrics they use nowadays. I think it's more of a lowest bidder type of thing. They want as many home games as they can get for monetary reasons and have to pay these teams to come in and take beatings like this.

New Hampshire is definitely NOT a middling team. That was my point.

Auburn, CU, Dayton were all part of the Maui invitational and weren’t scheduled. Iowa is always scheduled. Marquette part of the big East/Big 12 challenge and was assigned.

Iowa State scheduled literally none of those games on its own.
Not sure what you’re trying to say here. ISU entered the Maui Classic knowing the competition would be tough. They knew they were playing a tough Marquette team as part of the Big East challenge. They knew they were playing a rivalry game on the road. You don’t think these were factored in while setting the test of their schedule?

It also teaches bad habits on offense and defense. Turned it off midway through the first half. Not entertaining.

Wow, can't cheer for watching some good offense, pining for the times when all you can do is bitch about poor defense losing games?

I will agree with the UNI/Drake part but the rest of your Paragraph is Ridiculos. Beth is not firing anyone this year and definitly not Kirk. The mens team in my view is very good this year and will probably make the NCAA barring major injury.

Go no further than the football board to learn that all that matters is having an exciting offense. Winning be damned!

Of course, the football stadium would have 12k empty seats if they scored twice as many points, and won half as many many games.
