Rumor: Williams to Transfer

The kid played backup pg, out of position I might add, he was not the 13th-14th guy on the roster, "goodness". We need guards who can dribble into the lane and finish. He wasn't always the best at that but better than anyone else on the current roster. He would have been a great 3 but apparently won't get the chance here, too bad.
I think he was talking about Dailey being the 13th guy this year, when folks were projecting he'd start at the three next year.........

So your sources have given you every possible scenario, and one of those will happen. Wow! Thats pretty enlightening!
Actually - I'm pointing out that the people closer to the program haven't clarified with any definitive statements. Posters here are declaring whether or not he will contribute, but beat writers and folks close to the team have not even guaranteed he'll be on the team next year.

So yes, there are a lot of possibilities, and I am not ready to commit to any of them because I:
1) Do not personally know Connor McCaffery or have any indication of his motivations and desires in the coming months and years.
2) Have seen no one I trust declare or speculate on the future with any degree of certainty.

Not talking about Williams....actually really like his game. Talking about a guy predicting Daily will be a starter next year

I've actually wondered myself if he'll be on the team or not, given the baseball thing. My gut says he will, because he's said he's always wanted to play for his Dad, and enjoys playing with Patrick. I guess we'll know in a couple of months.

Dan...you know that their are people on here more informed and have basketball IQs that far exceed the coaching staff.

True. And my concern is someday they will go out and get jobs coaching places like Illinois, Nebraska....and then Fran's in BIG Trouble!!!!

They will just recruit better, because they say that is what needs to be done.
Game coach better, because they say that is what needs to be done.
Develop players better, because they say that is what needs to be done.
Etc., etc, etc.

This is why I think there might be some merit to the idea that he redshirts in basketball this season and plays baseball for Iowa. He can then hedge his bets on whether he wants to see how far baseball can take him, and if he doesn't like what he sees, he can get right back into basketball and have an extra year to play with his brother (if you look at them on the court together for West, they just love playing with each other).

Saw on twitter from a non reporter but Rick Brown retweeted. Don't shoot the messenger if not true.
The account that sent out that tweet had 47 followers. Maybe the dude is right, but forgive me if I don't get wound up about a twitter rumor started by a dude with no following.

This is an interesting thought. Question for those more in the know on scholarship/eligibility issues:

Could Connor accept a partial baseball scholarship, not walk on to the basketball team for a year (no formal association to basketball, using a pseudo redshirt year) then reassess completely the following year (in terms of basketball scholarship/eligibility impact)?

If I recall correctly playing any sport triggers your 5 years to play 4 in all sports, but without having a formal relationship with the basketball team, he would not count against their scholarships?

Just my two cents, again, but in the B1G we can't have a sub 6' guard at the two unless we find a point guard that can defend the two. Plus, watching Jok get killed trying to move off the ball to get open, how long does a Bohannon survive that?

IF, Fran decides to use this opportunity for a Grad transfer, I imagine the better play would be for a bigger combo...but, we've got that in Connor so, why?

Depth is the only question at guard, imo, Bohannon, Moss, McCaffery, Ellingson, Dailey...does Fran have confidence that is enough and that those guys are competitive level in the B1G?

I think this is right. Bohannon is an asset playing the point as a combo guard, a really good shooter who can also see the floor and pass. Having him play 25-30 minutes a game will work. With Jok and his 30+ minutes per game leaving, there is an immediate opportunity for a lot of playing time for a larger combo guard, someone who primarily plays off the ball but who could also run the point if needed. That would still allow for opportunity for Moss, McCaffery, etc to receive minutes.

I agree that playing heavy minutes of Bohannon primarily off the ball wouldn't work that great, unless the guy playing the point is taller.

Keep in mind that Coach Fran knew before anyone else that jordan Bohannon was special and would be a great point guard. People around here thought he was crazy.
Keep in mind that Coach always speaks highly of every player on his team - to the point of hyperbole. That being said I really, really like the kid.

Back to the CW question. I hope the transfer rumor turns out to be just that ; a rumor and nothing more. I would like to see Christian stay with the team and continue to get better.
None of us has any say on the matter either way. If he does stay, he needs to get better, a lot better. Either way he chooses is fine by me.

But if he does leave, Fran would be wise to hit the open market for a real penetrating type point guard, assuming one exists that is looking for a new team.

You'd figure if Williams to leave we would know by now or probably not till Sunday night at the earliest. Fran and most of the coaches in Phoenix for 3pt contest last night. Lot of coaches will attend final 4 with free tickets and for some other stuff and be there for the weekend. Just speculation but think maybe Fran is there for the 2 games Saturday.

You assume Heller has scholarship money and is willing to give Connor a scholarship.

If a guard transfers it I hope Fran looks at adding another guard that can actually stay in front of his assignment.

If Williams does transfer it opens up a scholarship for Connor...if the rumor is false and no one leaves, Connor would not receive a scholarship until his junior year....look it up. There is no room for a transfer point guard that our coach has refuses to go after since the Bryce Cartwright era. If Jason Bohannon as a point guard is the best Fran can do, I'll take him in a heartbeat....you can't make as many 3's and assists as he did as a freshman without being pretty good. Somehow the coaching staff will find a way to hide Jason on the defensive end but this kid is as tough as nails....and was totally underrated coming out of high school. Iowa will do just fine without bringing in a transfer that may or may not work out.

That would be an assumption of that scenario, yes. My question was actually whether it was possible, though, and what the implications for scholarship limits/eligibility would be.

I could see a backcourt of J Bo 30 minutes, Moss 30 and Conner 20. With Dailey and Ellingson available I don't see a huge depth issue. Conner should understand Fran's system fully the day he steps on campus. If his physical skills allow him to play and especially defend at this level.... no worries.

I'll still be surprised to see CW leave.

While you are correct numbers wise I see a much greater likelyhood of a 4/5 transfer after next season as minutes will be difficult to come by next year. I certainly see an other opening or maybe two next year.

Connor is not going to redshirt. He should be an immediate contributor. Did you mean to say walk-on?
Honestly, no. I personally do not feel like he will be at the level that would justify burning a year, could be wrong, just my opinion. I'd rather see him develop another year and give us a little buffer between him and JB class/scholarship distribution wise.

***Edit***
Regardless, even if it is an off guard position and not PG, Iowa can always use more guards, especially if they can find one that can penetrate better than our guys can now. Moss was great at times, and far from that at others. He will improve, but if Iowa has the opportunity to go after a more proven player for a year, why not?

Future recruiting: What positions do we recruit in the coming classes if we get some extra scholarships? We are so young and loaded at every position, I feel like it may be difficult to get kids to come to Iowa knowing they wont get much playing time their first year or two.

Sucks. I really like Williams' game. He was just not getting the minutes to develop as he could have.....had Bohannon not looked so darn good. I bet/hope that he is extremely successful wherever he lands. If this is true, the best of luck to him and I am sure there will be Hawkeye fans following his career.
What part of his game did you like so much? He only had skills for B1G level at the defensive end. He has had two years and brings nothing offensively. Slow off the dribble, average passer at best and terrible shooter. Whenever he took a shot, I considered it a turnover.

You forgot that they would have the perfect bench demeanor, because obviously his constant violent outbursts are what's holding McCaffery back.

If anything we might see wat Maishe Dailey can do next year. As I've said I could see him starting the year at the three

Good lord....he was the 13th or 14th guy on the roster. This is where the Iowa fanbase is now? We have moved on from "knowing" the coach is wrong about the 8th or 9th and now predict the 13th guy will start next year????? Goodness

he said more-or-less 'playing the 3 position at the start of the year' not moving into the starting lineup

I believe when dealing with a dual-sport athlete and one of the sports is fully scholarship funded (like basketball) and one is not (like baseball) that Conor would not be allowed to have a partial baseball scholarship and then play basketball. He would either have to walk on both teams, or have a basketball scholarship and walk on the baseball team.

When we have these discussions about a PG need, almost each week, I see a lot of discussion about getting someone who can penetrate and set up shooters. I agree that isn't JBo's strength, but his biggest weakness is on the other end of the court. The Hawks really need a player quick enough to play good on-ball defense on the other team's primary ball handler. Moss is decent, but the inability of the other guards to stay in front of their man is IMO by far the biggest weakness on the team. I think the help defense by the bigs will improve with experience, but I am not confident that our PG options will ever be able to play even average man defense.

Reading between the lines, I think there are a lot of options on the table for the level of contribution Connor makes. It will depend on who stays and who leaves, what Connor's options are with baseball, etc. They range from Not at Iowa - Playing 20 minutes per game. Here are few possible scenarios I've heard from folks closer to the program than I, but no one has made a definitive declaration of which one it will likely be:

Prep School
Pro Baseball
UI Baseball, No UI Basketball
UI Baseball + UI Basketball
Redshirt (walk on or scholarship)
No Redshirt (walk on or scholarship)
lol, connor is not going to prep school .

You may be exactly right. However, when we talk about point guard need on a weekly basis the one thing I always hope to see, and don't....

Every team has strengths and weaknesses. What Bohannon is missing by not being a defensive stopper (I won't say he can't be a serviceable defender as he'd have to be less than willing to work on improving, and he is the opposite.) he makes up for and probably more in other areas of his game.

And more to the point. If he can learn to shade his guys, drive them the direction he wants them to go, he can run them right into help defense and problem solved. Perfect? No. The help defense can leave another guy open.

But there it is and that is as simple as I can put it, no team is perfect and focusing on the weaknesses just, well, on a weekly basis we hear we don't have a point guard who is spectacular at breaking down guys and going to the hole...or like you say, had/may have limitations on defense? Focusing on the weaknesses is all fine and dandy but we've got some strengths at point guard with Bohannon that many other coaches would love to have.

I also get the feeling that Dailey may have been quietly improving in practice and that he's staying and could sneak into the rotation next year. He has the same size and length that CW does. If he can become a decent defender, it will be like we haven't lost anything.

I have this feeling too. I am thinking Dailey plays next year. Probably eats up a lot of minutes. At least I am hoping that is the case! He has the skills, if he can round them out, and play some good defense, he will see some minutes for certain.

His name is Jordan.

He's a good ball handler, good shooter, good free throw shooter and isn't afraid to shoot. All great attributes. Which would be better suited for a starting shooting guard and a backup point guard, IMO.

Maybe what you say is true, but it doesn't make sense to me.

This I do know, they don't have squat for Baseball scholarships. Apparently the limit is 11.7 scholarships per year, per team. The current Iowa Baseball roster has 36 players or so it appears.
