Rutgers Game Day Advice Needed

Just to clarify for visitors, if they park in a university lot, do they still need to be out of there within 2 hours after the game? Can't remember if that rule has been relaxed or not. Since 11am game and if nice day people may or may not want to hang. Just in case a private parking (in a yard or something) may be better for them.

Not a rule anymore.

Assuming you're coming in from the NY metro area or Philly, I think it's safe to say that your airport experience will be a little different on this end.

ha. I used to travel for business. I've been to the Florence, SC airport. one runway. you walk on the tarmac for your plane. I should be good, but appreciate the heads up.

Another Rutgers fan (& wife) joining the thread - great info so far! Thanks! Flying in to Cedar Rapids Thursday night, renting a car, staying at Drury Inn in Coralville, flying out Sunday AM. Will have all day Friday to explore, and Saturday night as well.... Enjoy foodie tours, wife enjoys shopping...

Oh man! You hit it perfect. That area is perfect for food, a sky bar. Shopping at Von Maur, Coral Ridge Mall, and Williamsburg’s outlets.
You can get up into the Amana Colonies for a meal, or head downtown to celebrate the Hawks victory with the students and other fans. Make sure not to miss Bluebird for breakfast.

Forget the Amanas - lots of decent restaurants within walking distance (2 - 3 blocks max) from your hotel. Also a Trader Joes a block away.

If you want the Iowa City experience, stay away from Coralville (except for Iowa River and Power). Hamburg Inn is a classic spot which is always filled with football fans on game day, Bluebird is good but just not as good. Airliner is also historic and right on main street. The food sucks, except for the pizza, but it's a great place to be on game day. And while you're there, walk over to the Old Capitol and check out the view from the west side looking towards the river. It is the single best vantage point to take in the Iowa campus. Also take a few minutes to walk the ped mall, its about 3 blocks by one block so doesn't take long, but it's the heart of downtown Iowa City. Park downtown and walk to the game from there down Melrose which, on football Saturdays, is like Mardi Gras atmosphere. I've never been a Joe's Place fan, but I hear they have a roof top bar now which could be awesome. The Hangar outlet mall is worthless, don't waste your time. Amana Colonies is fun if you're like a hundred years old and yearn for the days of horse drawn transportation. If you really want a drunken Iowa City experience: black angel at midnight.

for cryin' out loud, STOP sending visiting fans to the Amanas. Unless they're an older couple that likes a slow pace, big bowls of simple whole food from the 60s and 70s , antiques and knitted things...it's a snooze fest. (yeah, OK... there's a brewery too).

I'm guessing anybody from the East Coast who's into that has already done Lancaster, Pennsylvania. If they wanna do it again...great. But now they know.

Another Rutgers fan here making the trip with a few others - appreciate the feedback.

We’ll be heading up to check out Field of Dreams one day - any other pit stops or things to do along the way?

Also the Tanger outlet was a good thought but I have 4 of those outlets within an hour drive of me in Southern NJ (less populous than Northern NJ) haha. Rutgers fans should be all set when it comes to retail shopping.

As one who is interested in history there are two places for you to consider

1. a few miles east of Iowa City in West Branch is the birthplace of President Herbert Hoover and his library

2. in the middle of the quadrangle in the heart of the campus is the restored first capital of the State of Iowa

You might enjoy visiting either of both

Enjoy your stay in Iowa and thanks for coming

It's called the Pentacrest, not the quadrangle. The Quadrangle was a dorm that was bulldozed a few years ago to make room for the new pharmacy building.

Maquoketa Caves is kind of on the way. It's worth a stop, google image some pics of it.

This year is the 30th anniversary of the Field of Dreams movie. The site planned some activities back in June. It looks like there are no special events planned in September but it is still worth a visit for the occasion when you are here.

lots of good info in here. As stated above, NJ is the land of outlets so no need to really do more shopping. Rooftop bars are always a great idea. Field of Dreams is on our list for sure.

Pizza? In Iowa? for a bunch of people from NY/NJ ...the land of pizza? Not sure that is going to work well. :)

Then what you need is a big Iowa Chop or steak. When in Rome...

So is Tin Roost in North Liberty the best place for pork T? Looking for Iowa staples, sounds like this is one.....

If you get in on Fri head over to Stellas for drinks and dessert (first) — dinner late. Their bread pudding is awesome btw. You can sit outside and it’s right over by Kinnick, so you can tour the West side of campus (Basketball, Baseball, Training Facility, Children’s Hospital — all in a 1.5 mile loop)

Then go eat a late dinner at a steakhouse: Joseph’s or Iowa Chop House (on the other side of the river).

Then you can walk by old capitol on your way to the rooftop bar at...someone help...

Or if you’d rather, dinner at Tin Roost is alright. Really nice patio if the weather is nice and you want to sit rather than walk.

All of these places will be swamped.

Busy, yes. Worst case is you have a 30 minute wait and you walk to Kinnick and back (5 min each way) — and talk the Uber tour of West Campus before heading over to the Ped Mall (Joseph’s is over there)

May make reservations....
Good luck! Maybe call ahead? All are good suggestions. Tin Roost is large with lots of outside seating so is the weather is agreeable, it's more comfortable. But it's a drive. The restaurants around River Landing are nice (30Hop, Marquee Pizza, Vespa) and a brewery (Back Pocket), too. By the time you are visiting there will be others in that area, too.

Get some Quad City style pizza (half kidding). The Quad Cities are about 45-50 min East down I80 from Iowa City and about an hour and a half South on Hwy 61 from Dyersville.

Quad Cities are made of two Iowa cities and two Illinois cities and all the QC style pizza you can eat.

Recommend taking the train (is it too crowded?) to the game or drive and park?
The Hawkeye Express is a nice touch, nothing too fancy. Not too crowded. Maximum wait is about 20-25 min. Especially convenient if you are staying by the Coral Ridge Mall, and it drops you at the West side of the stadium.

As an Iowa City native, I'd suggest spending most of your time in downtown Iowa City, it's where the partying is. If you don't want to be around college kids stay way from Brothers, Fieldhouse and Sports Column. Joes Place is probably my favorite bar as a 37 year old. Check out plenty of bars, dont be afraid to jump around. I havent seen anyone mention Backpocket brewery in the Iowa River landing. Plenty of good restaurants in the area. 30 Hop is pretty cool too with a rooftop bar. I hope you have fun in your stay, it means the world to us Iowa Citians that outside visitors have a good time!

If you enjoy gambling and golf you could always head to Riverside Casino in Riverside, IA. Like 15 minutes south of IC.

Rutgers fan here and long time lurker on these boards. I'm hoping to get some feedback for our group of 6 that are visiting for the upcoming Rutgers/Iowa game on Sept. 7. Iowa is my #2 favorite team as my daughter is an Iowa grad so, like the joke, I can truly say my daughter and my money went to Iowa. It's been 5+ years since I last attended a game at Kinnick and I have a few questions.

I seem to recall that visiting teams had tickets located behind their bench near the 10 yard line or so. Is that still the location for visiting team tickets?

I've tailgated at the parking lot nearby the Library in Iowa City. Is it still a cash lot with no parking pass needed on game day?

We fly in on Friday and most of our group have never been to Iowa before. I'd like to take them for lunch somewhere with the spirit for Iowa football. I'm been to The Vine in Coralville and liked all the Iowa banners hanging from the ceiling. Any other bars/restaurants recommendations?

Any suggestions for restaurants for dinner after the game? I recall most restaurants are packed on Saturday evenings after a game. I already have reservations for Friday evening at one of my favorites the Iowa River Power restaurant.

We're staying to Monday so I'm open to any ideas for things to do on Sunday in or around Iowa City? I've never been to the sports hall of fame. Is that worth a visit?

Thanks in advance for any responses and looking forward to our game.
If I were you and you haven't gotten tickets yet, I would see what they are going for in the North End zone, especially the club seats.

As you might know, the North End zone renovation is finally completed. The North end zone now has 3 tiers. The middle tier is the club area/club seats and they look amazing. There might be seats for sale and they might be decently priced BECAUSE demand for this game is not gonna be as great as say, the Penn State home game.

Note, too, that there are brand new concessions & brand new rest rooms on the 1st and 3rd tier of the North End Zone. Even if you got tickets way up in the 3rd tier the view of the field looks amazing because the walk up there is VERY STEEP and you are on top of the action.

Are you talking about sections 135-137 and 335-337? Not sure I see a "middle tier". If it's "Outdoor Club", those tickets are $400 each.... Stubhub doesn't specify North/South....

Why would anyone want to sit in the end zone? Even from club seats? You can't see anything that happens on the other side of the field.

Sorry for the confusion. When looking at Stub Hub, the north end zone is on the right.

Yeah, right now there are only 4 tickets for sale in the Kinnick Edge Outdoor Club (Tier 2); and you are correct; they are going for $400 each.

132-140 are Tier 1

331-341 are Tier 3
