Before I get going here I just want to press the breaks a little bit and say I don't really have any expectations for Boyle and his career at Iowa due to the fact I don't know him, however what I have seen from him over the past 3-4 years has caused me to become very intrigued about where his future could go in football. Anyway so a couple years back I was back in Iowa and got talked into by a family member to go watch a Dowling football game as his son was a starter for them. I couldnt believe how good Boyle looked on the field as he just looked like a man playing against boys. I didnt think he would be a college QB but his athletic ability was good enough for B1G football. After the game I waited with my cousin for his son and while we were waiting Boyle came out and I remember thinking the kid looked more like a linebacker then a QB which got me thinking he could be an all-american LB with his athletic ability which was top notch. I played football for a small university down in the southeast and have 6 years of high school football coaching experience in Florida. I have seen some dang talented football players and Boyle belongs among them.

Fast forward to this last weekend. I came back to Iowa to visit some family and friends and ended up going to the spring game. Boyle at WR came out of nowhere for us and really impressed us. So one of my friends is really good friends with a guy that has a role with the team. Now let me say that anybody that works with the team that isnt a coach doesnt really know as much as many would think they would know. I guess the coaches do an amazing job of not talking openly about players around other staff so most of what they know about the team is just from being around each practice. So anyway we ask him about Boyle at WR and he said he is surprised too. That Boyle hasnt really spent any time at WR even in the practices leading up to the game. However when he did practice at WR the kid looked like he had been playing the position his entire life.

So now the hype machine begins. Boyle is a very talented and athletic kid who happens to have in my opinion a LB's or RB's frame on him, he can walk right into a different position (a skill position) and almost right away look like he has been there for years. I'm thinking KF has something special here.

Getting better athletes on the field works for me! No such thing as too many talented receivers on the field! My hope is that he is the 2nd coming of Eddie Hinkel. I couldn't help but think of him running the Jet Sweep and eventually throwing off of that.

IIRC, he was a very good thrower on the run at Dowling. Maybe better on the run than in the pocket.

Still shocked that between the 2, Ryan Boyle changes positions instead of the somewhat more obvious Drew Cook to TE....

I really liked what I saw first hand with Ryan. Small sample set but I saw a guy with good hans and quick feet with a little bit of speed.

I cut down the post a bit, but these two sentences stand out to me. Those of us who watched him play at Dowling have been telling people here that he was more of a RB behind an excellent OL.

Dowling's game plan was to run Boyle (or a RB) unless or until the defense came up to the LOS to stop it, and then he'd go play action over the top. Those Dowling teams were well-coached and had enough talent to beat a lot of opponents by 40 points. Boyle was a huge part of that, but he wasn't slinging it around like Tom Brady.

All I know is good for Boyle for willing to make the change to see the field sooner than later. Word was there really wasn't much separation from him and Cook but he if making change to WR to see the field sooner helps than so be it. If only past players like AJ Derby had that same attitude.

One thing that I will add is that I know the QB's on the team all have a pretty good relationship with one another. I wouldnt be surprised that if Boyle makes the switch to WR he moves up the depth chart fast and not just because of his talent and football IQ but because he already has a football relationship with CJ.

I can see him in the slot, a real football player doing whatever to get on the field. I'm thinking he sees the field this year.

Dear Auger, "Ryan Boyle Hype Machine" working very well!
So you disagree?

Watching the Spring game (was there), the kid is athletic as heck. No he is not on the same level as Stanford's CM, but he could fill the role at Iowa for that.

Too early to tell I think?!?!? I hope you are right!! I just got a kick out of "hype machine" and someone (you) comparing him to McAffrey. That's why I said it was working! I hope you are right by the way!

Yea I figured he was the one that would switch positions.. I had heard he was even with cook, but cook had more potential at qb.. The coaches really don't want to move cook yet. But when Stanley gets to town things may change. There was a lot of people hyping Boyle up a little too much at qb..

My gut tells me Cook moves also, as we recruit better QB talent

If he is that talented and athletic, I'm glad they are finding a way to get him on the field. No doubt Iowa needs play makers at wide receiver.

He will probably break Christian McCaffery's all purpose yards record this season...by the 8th game

Would you rather compare him to Ryan Leaf? Comparison's and Hype are what the pre-season is about. :)

The VERY tempered word I got from the spring game was that Cook looked more like he should be #2 behind CJ.

Boyle looks a little bit like a combination of Steve Largent, Wes Welker and Bambi.

Dear Auger, Your "Ryan Boyle Hype Machine" is a smashing success! Great work! Much rather have positive, optimistic, day-dreaming posts than the crap from a few years past! Keep up the great work!

I don't know about the future of DC. But I always liked his tape; his lineage; his leadership; his size; and his arm. So in summation, I always saw him as having more upside at the QB position. If you're someone who loves DT QBs I could see you disagreeing with me.

I think when Boyle first signed many thought he would end up at Safety

I was thinking LB. When he signed he was 215 and that was good weight. He has the frame to add another 10 -20lbs of good weight depending on where the coaches wanted him.

My hope is that Boyle is one of our best athletes and they want to get him on the field. Could be a brilliant move. At the very least it will be interesting in August.

Interesting in August? U haven't followed this thread, my friend. The train has left the station - April excitement only growing through months of May, June, july. Ryan Boyle summer accomplishments growing into full-fledged mania by August! I love it!

Reminds me of former Oklahoma/Michigan State Qb/Wr-Keith Nichol...Most would prolly like better overall numbers, and Boyle could exceed them, just an early potential comparison...

Some in this thread was hyperbole but I thought most was tongue in cheek.
