As a freshman. Not as athletic, but better all round shooter. I'm calling it now, I’ve seen enough, the kid should be starting at the 2. He’s an excellent passer, safe ball handler and the most confident/smooth shooter we’ve had since Peter Jok, who thought every shot was going in. And he plays solid defense. Just a smart confident all round player.

I don’t know about that, but he should definitely start over JBo.

Sorry, but thats a stretch. Dude is fearless, and has earned some minutes but to this point , ah NO. Joe W was on the all freshman all BIG, and made all conference teams every year. Joe shot 46% I believe as a senior from three, and learned to get to the rack as well. Still its his SEVEN boards a game we really miss this year from a wing player. PS may end up being a very good player, and he certainly knows the game, but he's not better then JW as a freshman

To clarify, what I’m saying is that he’s better than Joe was as a freshman, not Joe as a junior. Peyton just needs more minutes.

How big is Sandfort? He looks significantly bigger than the Murray brothers. He has to be 6’9”, 230 lbs.

Am I seeing things?

Sandfort has a lot of potential. Unlike Weezy, Sandfort does seem to be able to drive and finish with
both hands. Weezy was quite the athlete from NBA combine and I don't think Sandfort is as good an
athlete, but Sandfort has quicker release and pure shooter.

Weezy is only shooting 27% from 3pt line in g-league. It will be interesting to see Sandfort in a few years, he very well might be a lot better shooter from 3pt line at next level.

Sandfort is a forward, not a guard. He is battling Kris, Patrick & Connor for minutes. I agree he needs to play more but Patrick is playing great, Kris needs as many minutes as he can get and Connor is worthy of court time as well. He is not as good as Weezie, not at this point.

He only played 3 years. Joe was never a senior.

Agree and it's not even very close to what Wieskamp was as a freshman. It's no knock on Sandfordt, he has a chance to be good.

Wieskamp as a freshman shot 42% from 3, average 11 points a game, 77 % from the line, 5 rebounds a game, 27 minutes a game. That Iowa team needed him to be good and he was. Sandfordt is shooting 35% from 3 in limited minutes. I like his game and his potential, but just not close to what Wieskamp was as a freshman.

This. Cmon guys.

There is no question he is a pure shooter. Being 6’7” makes it easy to get his shots off. Agree that he is a good ball handler and shooter. He will be a good one before he is through.

Payton is still a freshmen who's learning the game, but he a better option then either Bohannan or Perkins. Length, better rebounder, and shooter. Bohannan doesn't deserve 36 minutes of any 40 minute game at this time in his fading career.
Unfortunately, there's another "0 for" game out there in Bohannan's future that will cost Iowa dearly....

No and it is not even close.
it is not close because Weezy was a starter and played a lot of minutes to get to 11ppg as Freshman and Sandfort doesn't play much. Weezy shot 42% as Freshman and then had a huge slump toward end of 2nd season and ended up 35% from 3 as sophomore.

It is unknowable whether Payton with PT would get hot and end up shooting 42% from 3 if he were given Weezy type minutes or if he would brick out and shoot 25% from 3. We do know that he has a nice shot and ought to be capable of shooting 42% from 3pt line.

While I agree with this, and @RocknRollface might go crazy on me, why not go big at times and play Sandfort a bit at the ? We’re a lousy defensive team with Bohannon at the 2, and he’s shooting terribly, why not try 12-15 minutes a game if Sandfort is hot at the 2. Go big everywhere but pt guard.

Like to see him get more minutes.
Not as good as JW was at this stage. Not even that close really.
But Sandfort has good tools to work with.

My gawd. I need to stop reading message boards.

And I thought Trump supporters were dumb.

I finally saw Tucker Devries play against UNI the other day & the real question is “just how in the hell good WAS that Waukee team last year?!”

Were they the all time greatest Iowa high school b-ball team ever??

I think Wieskamp was better as a freshman than Sandfort currently is, but the gap isn’t as wide as some of you are making it out to be. Payton has scored the third most points per 40 minutes of anybody on the team after the Murray’s, has the fourth best PER of any player on the team, and has the third highest win shares per 40 minutes. He simply hasn’t logged the minutes for this to be an apples to apples comparison

What I will say is that if Payton had the benefit of being able to stand in the corner as the fifth option behind Tyler Cook, Luka Garza, Jordan Bohannon, and Isaiah Moss (yes, Moss attempted more shots per game than Weezy), his numbers would probably look pretty good too. The eye test tells me that Payton has a much quicker release than Joe did his freshman year, plays with a much higher level of confidence than Joe did his freshman year (Joe disappeared a lot in Big Ten play and was frequently reluctant to shoot), and passes much better than Joe did his freshman year (1.6ast per 40 for Joe to 3.0 per 40 for Payton, who also makes many fantastic quick touch passes). Wieskamp was better defensively, which is why I’d still roll with him

I'd have him 6th man but wouldn't be mad if he started.

To me, the starting lineup is:
Joe T
Kris
PMac
Keegan
Rebraca

But I wouldn't be mad about Sandfort in place of Rebraca if you don't need the bigger body or in place of Kris.

I agree he should be getting more PT. This team is getting anemic production from the guards and cannot rely on Keegan and Pmac to carry them. Sandfort can get 10 ppg in a variety of ways vs. 3 pointers or nothing like Jbo. The kid hustles and scraps on both ends, moves his feet well and gives Iowa a a Gatens-type bigger body at the guard spot.

I think they were damn close. Maybe the Ames team with Barnes and McDermott could compete, but Omaha was great, and Pryce is fantastic as well. We need to get Pryce.

You put forward an unfalsifiable claim. By both the eye test and the data, Sandfordt is not as good as Wieskamp was as a freshman. It doesn't mean he is a bad player or that he won't end up having a good career. It is highly unlikely that he ends up as an NBA player like Wieskamp, and there is a reason for that. Wieskamp was a far better athlete. Wieskamp was also much more highly rated in the recruiting rankings. Those aren't the be-all, end all (see the Murrays). But Wieskamp was a top 40-50 type player, and he played like it in his Iowa career.

Of course, Sandfordt "could" get hot and shoot 42% from 3 if given 27 minutes a game. It's like saying I could do a better job than Barta as the AD. There is no way to refute that statement since it's never going to happen. I too would like Sandfordt to get more minutes. But I'm not the coach. He has a good future ahead of him and the 6th year guy and the 5th-year coach's son are both gone after this year, so he should have plenty of opportunity next year.
