Will he merit any time at LB, or is just going to shore up the special teams?
I also thought I saw #82 Falconer out there as well....
OilChecker, I would also think that the main reason to pull Hockaday's redshirt is the staff suspects he'll start at LB next year.
I noticed him out there Saturday and that was my first thought. Maybe they felt to make a run, they need some security but more so seeing next yrs possibilities and like you said , ability to replace fisher. With some weaker teams left to play, they may be able to get him some experience so next fall he isn't in awe when he first steps out there.Falconer played earlier in the season. I am not aware of Jinning playing this year.
Hockaday could be the leading candidate to replace Cole Fisher and if he is, could be another reason why they pulled his redshirt.
Mine too, but it's hard to find 4 and 5* FB's, P's, and K's.In my NCAA football game on xbox I've won 8 national championships in a row, all of my incoming recruits are 4* and 5* blue chippers and I redshirt every single one. This is proof KF has no idea what he is doing and should be fired for not redshirting freshmen.

Gotta get those super skilled QBs who can also kick and punt
I think they can, but the second they play, the redshirt is gone. I'd have to think, that just for emergency reasons, most would dress.Do redshirted players dress? I wish they were on the sidelines wearing a red jersey over their pads. "Taking off the redshirt" would be really exciting in the moment.
I am surprised about Hockaday for the simple fact that he wasn't needed. I guess maybe they are just getting him ready in case he is needed next year. I do think the kid could turn out to be a very good player.
I was surprised too but noticed that Hockaday played and Mends did not. Not sure if Mends injured or Hockaday has passed him. Will see how much he plays rest of year
Looks like he is listed as a FB now on the Official Iowa Football website roster. Don't know if that is an error or a change?Interesting about Mends, I would have to think he is injured.

Looking at this I see Nick Wilson listed as playing in one game and making a tackle. Think this is a mistake? I don't see him listed in the overall stats for the season, but I also haven't really looked into game by game participation.
Parker was also asked if Mends was injured, since he didn't play. Parker said no. So, it might be reasonable to infer that Hockaday has passed Mends.Phil Parker said today they have been thinking of taking the redshirt off of Hockaday for awhile. They see him battling for the WLB spot left by Fischer next year.

Mends has already redshirted. And has already played thus season. Not necessarily. KF has said in the past that he's left the decision up to the players; Mends might just prefer not to burn a year for hardly any playing time.
It could be that they try to reward players based off of performance in practice during the week. It could be that Hockaday made a huge impression during the week and since they were mulling pulling his red-shirt anyhow ... they decided to give him the nod. Also, Mends mostly has been getting action on special teams. It's possible that Mends may have missed some assignments in prior games and hasn't corrected the issues adequately well - so they wanted to give a different guy a shot.Parker was also asked if Mends was injured, since he didn't play. I thought it was odd how the transcript read of Parkers response to the question of whether Mends was hurt or not as to why he wasn't in the game ahead of Hockaday.Parker was also asked if Mends was injured, since he didn't play.
