Will he merit any time at LB, or is just going to shore up the special teams?

Kid must be impressing in practices...plus with ott going down, I think the coaches are perhaps a bit nervous with our depth at defensive end, and if one more end goes down, we might have to slide a linebacker down to fill the void. Just speculating, no inside info

OilChecker, I would also think that the main reason to pull Hockaday's redshirt is the staff suspects he'll start at LB next year.

Seems like the staff does like to do it. It may seem like they waste a lot of freshmen years with the players getting minimal time, but I think it's better than getting thrown into the fire as a RS freshman.

Falconer played earlier in the season. I am not aware of Jinning playing this year.
Hockaday could be the leading candidate to replace Cole Fisher and if he is, could be another reason why they pulled his redshirt.
I noticed him out there Saturday and that was my first thought. Maybe they felt to make a run, they need some security but more so seeing next yrs possibilities and like you said , ability to replace fisher. With some weaker teams left to play, they may be able to get him some experience so next fall he isn't in awe when he first steps out there.

He looked good on ST'S Saturday

In my NCAA football game on xbox I've won 8 national championships in a row, all of my incoming recruits are 4* and 5* blue chippers and I redshirt every single one. This is proof KF has no idea what he is doing and should be fired for not redshirting freshmen.
Mine too, but it's hard to find 4 and 5* FB's, P's, and K's.

Maybe he went to the coaching staff and said he was willing to burn the RS and be ready to play if/when his number is called as he wants to be a part of this special season.

Do redshirted players dress? I wish they were on the sidelines wearing a red jersey over their pads. "Taking off the redshirt" would be really exciting in the moment.
I think they can, but the second they play, the redshirt is gone. I'd have to think, that just for emergency reasons, most would dress.

I am surprised about Hockaday for the simple fact that he wasn't needed. I guess maybe they are just getting him ready in case he is needed next year. I do think the kid could turn out to be a very good player.

I was surprised too but noticed that Hockaday played and Mends did not. Not sure if Mends injured or Hockaday has passed him. Will see how much he plays rest of year

Interesting about Mends, I would have to think he is injured.

Phil Parker said today they have been thinking of taking the redshirt off of Hockaday for awhile. They see him battling for the WLB spot left by Fischer next year.

Looking at this I see Nick Wilson listed as playing in one game and making a tackle. Think this is a mistake? I don't see him listed in the overall stats for the season, but I also haven't really looked into game by game participation.

That's a mistake. Apart from a screw-up concerning the participation of Blythe ... most of the info on the following site seems pretty good.

The only freshmen who have played are Hockaday, Falconer, J. Smith, and Daniels.

Parker was also asked if Mends was injured, since he didn't play. Parker said no. So, it might be reasonable to infer that Hockaday has passed Mends.

Not necessarily. KF has said in the past that he's left the decision up to the players; Mends might just prefer not to burn a year for hardly any playing time.

Mends has already redshirted. And has already played thus season.

It could be that they try to reward players based off of performance in practice during the week. It could be that Hockaday made a huge impression during the week and since they were mulling pulling his red-shirt anyhow ... they decided to give him the nod. Also, Mends mostly has been getting action on special teams. It's possible that Mends may have missed some assignments in prior games and hasn't corrected the issues adequately well - so they wanted to give a different guy a shot.

There are tons of different scenarios that could have happened. Mends didn't play against Wisconsin either - yet he did against Illinois. Maybe they're trying to develop depth? I don't know.

I thought it was odd how the transcript read of Parkers response to the question of whether Mends was hurt or not as to why he wasn't in the game ahead of Hockaday.

"No, Mends wasn't hurt, at least not that I know of".

That was all he said. Kinda short. Maybe nothing big to read into but it just seemed a bit odd to me that he chose to use such few words and cut it off right there.

Sounds like he will help out on special teams immediately and (I surmise) provide better quality depth at LB.

I know the staff talked about taking the RS off of Jewell a couple years ago too.
I'm happy they didn't but it probably would of help him a lot with the speed of the game last season.
Huge adjustment on game day.
As far as Mends this move will make him step up or out.
