Scratch Grand Teton off your summer list

Really, let's talk about this... WHY is the government basically running tourist attractions? We rightfully preserved these wonderful places, and then we have government employees doing educational talks, guiding people on hikes, collecting money for admissions or parking, working in concessions or gift shops...

NONE OF THOSE JOBS SHOULD BE FEDERAL JOBS. They should be outsourced to private industry.

Park Rangers should only be doing things involving preservation of the land, not running the snack bar.
Holy f*ck this is the worst take I’ve read in weeks.

I went off to dinner, came home and found out Trad has done his usual confident stupidity in my thread.

If he had ever been in a park he would know that the worst services you experience in a park are all the private contractors. Yosemite’s historic Ahwahnee lodge is falling apart under private management. Everything is done on the cheap and costs 3 times too much.

Years back Booz Allen took over the federal camping website. Prices tripled, service stayed the same or worse….and the govt gets NONE of the money collected thru the site.

Last time Trump was in office parks were shut down and the public was left unsupervised. The damages are still being repaired today.
If I'm not mistaken Iowa tried that with rest areas.

What an idiot you are.

I am an avid user of our national parks…doing a 4 day hike in the Grand Canyon in 2 weeks. The NPS is one of the jewels of our government.

Trad may not know this, but the parks already outsource a ton of things. If you stay at a hotel in the park near the rim you are staying at a property run by Xanterra for example. The folks that work in those facilities aren’t federal employees.
I'm currently driving home from hiking five different national parks (Utah and GCNP--sore as hell right now), and I can confirm what you say. NPS probably does more with less than any other federal agency, and its budget is basically a rounding error in the grand scheme (<0.067%). Some people are so blindly anti-government when they perceive it doesn't benefit them that rational thought eludes them. Never thought I'd see the day when the fvcking national parks came under attack by nutjobs but here we are. Not that those types ever get off their asses to explore a national park.

Anyway, I hope you have a great trip! Four days in the canyon-- are you going rim to rim (to rim)? I was there Monday and yesterday. If you're hiking Bright Angel, it was very icy for the first mile or so down from the rim (until about lower tunnel), but I guess a lot can change in two weeks there. If needed, the general store was selling crampons for $30 a pair. Don't worry @The Tradition, it isn't run by NPS and there wasn't a park ranger working the register, you unnatural noise.

Look at how airports are run. Is there a cafeteria run by the airport authority?

No. They don't know anything about serving food.

Instead, they charge an insane amount for rent and private companies fall all over themselves trying to win that coveted space at Gate 77-120....

There are two sides to the "do it for less" analysis. How much does it/will it cost park guests? And how much will it/does it cost the taxpayer?

I would guess that guests will pay more, and the taxpayer will pay less. And I'm greatly in favor of that. Those who use the national parks should foot the majority of the bill.
You're wrong in virtually every way in this thread, but let's assume for the sake of amusement you're correct about the privatization farce. Do you really think that privatizing some small portion of the NPS will make anything smaller than a pea sized dent in the federal deficit or debt? Or that any of the other targets of these DOGE clowns will for that matter? As others have said, history shows privatization often increases costs long term. You can pretend that we save money on salaries and benefits, but the truth is those costs are baked into the contract rates with private entities, and the market set up by a privatization scheme almost always lacks the scale to provide real competition, thus leaving the taxpayer to pay the same or often higher rates for the same services, just with some private industry lining its pockets instead.

Defense spending is nearly half of the discretionary budget each year. I agree federal spending is too high and the interest on the debt is a growing problem. But if you were even remotely sincere about fiscal responsibility instead of constantly flogging whatever whipping boy du jour the talking heads told you to be mad about, then maybe you would set your sights higher than a tiny fraction of 0.067% of the annual federal budget.

I’m curious how a person thinks the park itself is going to create enough of a profit to incentivize a private entity to take over.

The parks themselves don’t turn any profit. All the money made is by surrounding communities. Food, lodging, entertainment.

I fear what private companies would have to do to spark to turn a profit directly off of it.

Ads bro. Look at all of that potential billboard space on the Teton range

Yeah it is my second annual rim to rim to rim. Going down south Kaibob, 3 nights in the canyon and on the ascent we will traverse to get to bright angel (parts of bright Angel and all of phantom ranch are closed for waterline repairs - hoping they don’t stop those halfway through out of Doge ignorance).

Good tip on crampons. I have all the necessary gear, last year I was pushing through 3 feet of snow at the north rim without snowshoes. Full hike with side quests is 50 miles, 12K feet of elevation. Should be amazing.

If there's enough tourist demand to lure an outside company to run things, I guarantee that it will be a better deal for the American taxpayer.

I'm not saying federal Park Rangers would cease to exist. They have their place. But collecting admissions fees isn't one of them. That should not be a federal government employee job.
Must. Defend. Trump.

Long live the king!

You have no clue what it is like having a job outside of being a left wing activist funded by taxpayers.

I’ll defer to your experience. If there’s anyone that knows what it’s like to suck the teet of the American taxpayer their whole life it’s a welfare queen from shithole Clayton county Ioway! THE FOOKIN’ HITMAN PLANNING ON CRUSHING SOY BOYS AND SPRITE ON HORT DIS MORNING! (Sorry @LunchBox50 i suck at this)

You’re a really miserable person. Instead of ridiculing people the Hawkeye Beacon. You need to go to betterhelp.com. You need someone to talk to about dealing with your failures in life.

You’re a stupid phuck from shithole Ioway with nothing going on in their life that will never amount to anything and won’t have anyone attend their funeral. But I love you being on HORT. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Never leave here. Please!

You need to step away from the internet for a while until you can deal with your problems in life. The best things you can do is find some activities that are beneficial to you and society. Instead of being a useless leech.

When I need advice from a Clayton county Ioway loser who hasn’t worked an honest day in his life I’ll ask for it.

Getting back to the op, what exactly is the job description for a training supervisor?

Like any of the HORT bozos care. Everybody here is about an inch deep when it comes to substance. That said, I’ve found USAjobs a great place to start looking when I wonder what government job descriptions are. Here’s one with NPS even filtered for you. 1% of the time I’m here to help.

Tx and bummer that it doesn’t have one listed. I have no idea whether we need 1, 17, or 150 at Teton but it certainly doesn’t sound like it has much to do with most of the discussion in this thread, or something that would necessarily dissuade me from visiting Teton. .

It’s not going to be as good of resource as in the past. Usually you could always find something similar to get an idea of what the job responsibilities are for any position. I haven’t poked around to find prior postings but maybe it’s there.

It’s almost like something happened recently that is impacting posting of new positions.

Some are still just waking up to the fact pissing away trillions of dollars has consequences. Hell, Stacey Abrahms was set to receive 2B for a make believe green org! The fall out from the dem corruption orgy will hurt for a while. Welcome to adulting.

NONE OF THOSE JOBS SHOULD BE FEDERAL JOBS. They should be outsourced to private industry.

Park Rangers should only be doing things involving preservation of the land, not running the snack bar.

So not only do I pay taxes to maintain the park but I now have to pay exhorbitant fees to get into the park as well.

How about this. . . how about some red state preferably not mine try that out with their state parks and see how it goes in 5 or 10 years before we try this shit with national parks.

I don't want it to be mine because I like my state parks. Those government employees do a damn good job.
