SEL assistant sports information director claims racism at Carver

I rewatched the scuffle a few times last night, and here are a few thoughts

CMac didn't escalate anything. The SELA guy was already jamming his forearm into Toussaint's face by then.

If the SELA guy was kicked out because the B1G is soft and the other guys are so tough, complaining about CMac is even softer

Regarding racist comments, is this Salim guy say thats what started the fight or that it happened after the fight? If they happened after, their guy should have still been kicked out and the fan should have been addressed separately. The comments should have nothing to do with the B1G being soft for kicking him out or for CMac

I clearly overthought this all and this Salim dude had too much spiked eggnog to go with holiday stress, but it was fun to watch.

When you have to delete your Twitter account, it speaks volumes about your claims.

I'm sure many fans did call their player a thug. It was literally a thug move. Absolutely nothing to do with race.

Iowa’s own Jacob Jaacks (aka Jacob Crane) certainly displayed some thuggish behavior in his time.

The guy deleted his Twitter account. Lol
Yea, I'm pretty sure he got some advise from the people he worked for to start putting the fire out on his scorched earth tirade if he wants to stay employed. As someone mentioned this kind of crap could get them banned from BIG payout games, which they use to fund their directional school program......

Whatever game time wrong may have been done to the SEL players , it was not the asst SID’s job to back or protect them.
As a senior player in the game, it would be Connor’s. No Question.

Iowa handled this (on the court) the best way possible. None better than Joe Toussaint. Fran did a great job shielding the bench as the doucher walked off smiling it up and stopping the Iowa players from engaging the DB. Connor did his job as a senior player. Enough can’t be said for Toussaint though during this entire episode and not reacting to it.

Pretty proud of the Iowa players and staff for their on court behavior.

Exactly. Also, I can’t help but feel like Joe T is one of the last dudes on the roster I would want to mess with. You don’t break records playing basketball in the Bronx being soft. He handled that situation as professional as you possibly could have.

One more reason it's such a bad idea to play these teams in the 250-350 range. Iowa should be better than that any year under any circumstances. This guy is an idiot, but play UNI, Drake, St. Louis, Marquette, DePaul--teams with a pulse. Enough of the NE/SW State jokers.

I agree playing 300 plus teams is waste of time. However, I think it is hard to schedule mid majors UNI, DRAKE, etc and get more than 1 to 1 ratio of home game to road games. There is not a lot of upside to going to UNI's place and making their season with refs from MVC whistling. UNI has an odd ball gym.

I'd rather play more P5 teams 1:1 home and away---then even if you lose, you are in better shape vs playing some 300 plus team and winning at home. These games vs 300 plus don't even improve the team.

2-3 or even 4 of those games is okay. But yes, playing 7 and 8 if you count Western Illinois isn't good. Western Illinois is quite a bit better than these others, at 175 in Pomeroy rankings. They actually have a pulse. This volume of games against these bad teams does nothing to make Iowa better. I know new players need court time, but playing against such terrible teams they develop bad habits.

More likely goes into the scheduling than I am aware of. It's likely harder to get teams in the 100-200 range to do a single play, likely that the real power teams pay more for those game or the better teams in the MAC or Summit League have better options than to play at Iowa. But yes, the scheduling has to get better.

Cancelling the drake uni games in DSM was some bullshit :(

These days, it is hard to believe since it is so rarely the case.
Absolutely Ronman. Its rare today that people are held accountable for their actions, especially school age kids. I do have to wonder if they just pulled down his page until this blows over, (obviously no one from Iowa will be giving a second thought to some directional school we played in a week, ) like he's suspended or if the school told him to. "not let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya"!

I'll second that for personal reasons. I loved:( the Big Four Classic in Des Moines. It was a rare chance for me to see the Hawks play live. I could work Saturday and still get up to DM by gametime and catch both games. Stay the night downtown, and take the wife out to dinner. (She likes basketball, as she was a good player back in the Iowa girls 3 on 3 days), so she enjoyed the trip as well. An easy three hour drive one way. Wish they would have played two games each over the weekend. Was not happy to see the end of the Classic...

I wasn't impressed when one of our seniors swatted Frans hands away when Fran tried to calm him down. The senior could learn a lot from how Joe T handled the situation.

Agreed. And it wasn't racist when people called him a thug.
I'm not defending SID who was clearly triggered but you're an idiot if you don't think race is not a factor when people choose to use the term thug instead of others.... It gets thrown out a lot and I can't remember hearing it used towards a white player. They would have chosen another word if a guy who looks like Patrick did the exact same thing. Never heard Jake Jaaks or Brian Cardinal or Bill Laimbeer called a thug before

It’s all about intent. Are there people who use code words when they really mean to say the n-word? Yes. Does that likely apply at a basketball game involving several black players on both teams? Probably not.

And yes, guys like Laimbeer were referred to as a thug by many.

Not one senior swatted Fran’s hand away. That’s as absurd as Connor shoving an official.
It sure appeared that way when I watched it the first time. What part of the game was it? I don't care enough to go through the whole game but will watch again if it's narrowed down and recant my statement if wrong. Hope you will do the same.

4:06 mark of the first half.

I’ve watched the play over a dozen times. Connor moves his hand/pumps his fist, but it’s not to swat Fran’s hand away.

People called Jaacks a thug all the time! You're way off base here. Just because someone has misused a word at some point does not mean that others are doing the same.

The player tackled Joe T and tried to take his head off with a forearm. That's thuggish behavior. He was accurately called a thug as a result.

Racism is very prevalent in the United States. This was not, however, an example of it. (That's why the CID got canned) Save your outrage and defense for actual racist events. I encourage you to speak out then.

Guys, you don’t get that this dude is making a long term career play here. Let’s review: Dis Iowa and the BIG? Check. Call out an Iowa player, specifically a McCaffery? Check. Use the “Iowa is racist” trope? Check. Complain post game in form of media about officials? Check.Clearly, this guy is making a play for a job at Iowa State. He’s already checked the requisite Jamie Pollard boxes to show why he should be hired. Although not sure it’s much of a potential move up!😎

Not your best effort.

"A big test came in the Iowa game in the form of Hawkeye thug Jacob Jaacks. Jaacks threw several elbows and forearms at Przybilla, but the Gophers center did not retaliate."

"Thus, meet the We’re No Angels All-Stars: Bill Laimbeer and Rick Mahorn of Detroit, Maurice Lucas of Portland, Xavier McDaniel of Seattle and Danny Ainge, from you know where. When trouble starts, will you have to look far to find one of them?"

Didn't take much effort to find these. You need to get a little better at this troll motif that you are working on.

We're not idiots. It's just your opinion. And you are SO off-base. Laimbeer, etc., were absolutely called thugs in those days. Among other things, but thugs for sure. You just WANT this SO badly to be racist, like everything else. Total crock.
