Clearly Thug is used universally across races. The last link, however, shows how some people are more sensitive to the term (NAACP in this case) since it may have a different meaning in some sectors of the population.
It comes back to political correctness again - if anyone from a protected class, even a minority of them, is offended, then you are in the wrong regardless of intent, definition, context or any other defense you may use. I'm not sure it works the same the other way around. To some extent I agree with this, but I think it often gets taken too far - like the case of this thread. Should any word that offends anyone be labeled "offensive" and be taken out of circulation? What are the rules here? That's what makes this so difficult.
