Selling alcohol

Does anyone have a link regarding the allowance of alcohol at D1 stadiums and any negatives that have come with it?

Everything I’ve read has indicated that permitted alcohol has reduced binge drinking and alcohol related offenses. Which doesn’t surprise me because prohibition doesn’t work.

There’s been zero negatives at Colorado State. In fact, I haven’t seen or heard of a single incident in the 20 years we’ve been here.

Prohibition doesn't work at all. The beers are going to be $9 or $10 dollars each and not one person will plan to get drunk on $10 beers. Nobody.

Iowa State pretty much has a bar inside of Jack Trice. Not sure what Iowa is waiting for because we all know where this is heading.

Right and do you take in the shot bottles or pay the $12 a beer or $15 a beer inside. And withstand the lines which will come with said beer sales.

I've never understood the need to get buzzed to enjoy oneself, but hey if that is the kind of lives many people have, then whatever it takes I guess.

So many people appear desperate to drink at football games, so I guess they'd sell quite a bit.

Everybody wants to live life through their phones and electronic networks now. Must have almost constant gratification. We need to be able to give thumbs up and down and receive instant feedback from people who are our "friends" we had neither seen or heard from in 30 years. I know every generation says this about younger generations, but this is a seismic shift.

It never ceases to amaze me how important alcohol is in some peoples lives.

Apparently we are having a reunion for Grumpy Old Men. Either that or an AA meeting full of folks that could never control themselves, and then preach and project that onto others.

You know...it is possible that people don't drink because they don't want to?

Barta's comment makes it sound like he doesn't want to sell alcohol, but there may be people that are starting to force his hand. This comment of not doing it for the money is so hypocritical. That guy will do anything for the money. Even his title was sold.

That's only available to their south endzone club seats. Kinnick's new north end zone will have something similar for the club seats.

Yeah if selling beer means that Iowa cuts down on the number of stupid ad reads at every timeout, I'm all for it. It won't be the end of the world if they allow alcohol sales. All the current situation does is have people get slobber-knockered prior to kickoff and/or smuggle stuff into the game. Sell it at a high price, cut off sales in the third quarter and kick the drunks out (that already happens).

I'd say ok to beer sales if smoking pot was allowed too...but you don't have to buy it there. Popcorn and nacho sales would go through the roof!

Can you imagine how much pot would cost in a stadium at a football game?

So Barta's tipping point is basically if everyone else is doing it. Got to love pro-active Barta.

While Harreld doesn't find it cost effective. Sighting mainly the extra cost of hiring more police because of this. Iowa is probably the most policed Big Ten Stadium.

I attended the USA Wrestling team duals at Carver Hawkeye a couple of weeks ago. Between sessions, they had a food and beverage garden in the Carver Hawkeye Parking lot. They sold beer and you were allowed to bring the beer back inside the stadium. They had another beer station located near the main ticket sales booth. I think that the beer sales were pretty brisk ($7 for a tall boy), but people seemed to enjoy it. Maybe that was a trial to see how it would work?

$7.00 for a tall boy is very reasonable.

For Sporting Event/Concert, yes it is. If this does happen I see 7 to 8 dollars for a domestic. May have some craft/import for 9 to 10 also. How much were beers going for at the Country concert a few years ago?
8.25 for a craft beer on the New Belgium patio if I remember correctly. Prob 6.50 or 7.00 for a macro beer, I’d assume.

I did a quick google search. The University of Minnesota lost almost $16,000 in their first year of alcohol sales at home football games, despite selling more than $900,000 worth of beer and wine.

I wonder how much could really be made by the UI per season?

So why is it in the suites

Because that group of people is much smaller, probably older, more mature, and with a lot more to lose by acting up, as compared to the 1000s of college-age students.

Good chance College age students aren't going to buy a ton of 7 to 10 dollar beers.

is Iowa still a 3.2 State? 4.9 or higher here in Canada , but a 15 pack of Old Milwaukee is 20-25 bucks Canadian .

i think we will see it in entire Kinnick within the next 5 years

Stupid. If you can’t sit through a college football game without sending alcohol down your gullet, you have a problem. I love it pre and post but if you are there to drink all day, stay home or go bar hopping

Iowa's north end will be similar in serving the drink. For ISU's you have to pay a very premium price to get in there. My spouse is a grad and I keep telling her at some point for one game will scalp and make it in there to see what it's like. Some of their fans complain because the people with those tickets tend to stay inside at times when they would like outside making noise.

It won't be a money maker but would keep some fans that go happy, until they complain about prices and standing in lines, etc. That's when you get the I can stay at home and watch on HD big screen and go to my frig and bathroom without waiting.

What happens is people sneak in the shot bottles. They are everywhere after games. Even saw a few large wine bottles. It's getting in. They don't search for stuff like the shot bottles. No way they could.

If you guys want to pay $8-15 for a stale 12 oz beer, be my guest. I hope it enhances your enjoyment of the game-day experience.

Move to Canada , Pot totally legal later this year, can have up to 30 grams on person and can grow 4 plants per property/ household.

Thanks for the input Mr holier than thou but if you get upset by other responsible adults having the ability to choose what they want to do on game day then you are the one with the problem. And newsflash.... People are doing it already with airplane bottles and flasks/botas. Better stay away from pro sports, might be too much freedom of choice for ya.

It's cool as long as no one is doing the driving after. Then they are just a@@ wipes for anyone doing that.

Never was an issue for my friends and I at Kinnick north back in the day!
My response was to the 1000's of college age students comment that will be buying them. Yeah some people will go crazy but I see many college age students will just do what they do already and sneak in alcohol.
