Senate Democrats just blocked the Laken Riley act

Why would anyone want to be a liberal and have to try and justify what their party stands for. One doesn't have to have the vision of an eagle to see the only thing that matters to the dems is remaining in power. Allowing illegals to flood our country while killing Americans, no problem. Dismantling all forms of election security, no problem. Letting criminals back out onto the street without bail to kill and harm again, no problem.

Does any honest person actually believe these things make America better?
I want to be a liberal because I have a brain it seems you don't.

Another great example of the DFL championing for the women's rights.

This is the first part. Totally serious bill here.

This Act may be cited as the “Laken Riley Act”.

SEC. 2. FINDINGS; SENSE OF CONGRESS.

(a) Findings.—Congress finds that the Nation—

(1) mourns the devastating loss of Laken Riley and other victims of the Biden administration’s open borders policies;

(2) honors the life and memory of Laken Riley and other victims of the Biden administration’s open borders policies; and

(3) denounces the open-borders policies of President Joe Biden, “Border Czar” Vice President Kamala Harris, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, and other Biden administration officials.

(b) Sense Of Congress.—It is the sense of Congress that—

(1) the Biden administration should not have released Laken Riley’s alleged murderer into the United States;

(2) the Biden administration should have arrested and detained Laken Riley’s alleged murderer after he was charged with crimes in New York, New York, and Athens, Georgia...

And we're really wondering why this bill didn't have a chance? Let's please be serious ITT, this bill reads like a Fox News story introduction.

I was thinking it was closer to sniping notes passed by mean kids in Jr High.

It's sort of embarrassing how petty Congress has become. I liked it better when they at least pretended to maintain decorum.

If you view it with blue or red glasses then only the other side does it and comparisons that expose your own side will be disingenuous. Reality is both do it, and the border security bill was done for the sole purpose of being able to say "we tried to fix the border and Republicans blocked it," ignoring the many reasons why it was blocked. Nothing different here. The message is "Dems would rather protect an illegal immigrant murderer than get justice for American citizens," completely overlooking the poisonous language in the bill.
You're completely off base here with your narrative of the border security bill's demise that the MAGA adherents torpedoed at Trump's bequest. Completely. You should read a newspaper on occasion so as to not appear foolish and biased in your day to day life and interaction.

How about we say the names of all the innocents who have been gunned down in schools, churches, grocery stores or theaters. Where is their justice.
What does that have to do with this bill?

Don't we already have laws against murder?

I’m not sure if I’m for or against the bill because I don’t know what’s actually in the bill. But can you address the question I posed in post #16?

As far as I can tell the bill exists mostly to talk sh!t about Democrats while also mandating that localities detain without bond or parole any "aliens" committing burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting. Failure to do so would leave the offices of the Secretary of Homeland Security open to legal action if the residents bringing the action can prove they have "experienced harm, including financial in excess of $100". It also seems toandate that any of these cases be expedited to the front of the line when possible.

It seems really inefficient and potentially incredibly expensive to me.

Which people? How - exactly - has this "issue" affected you? It's the only thing the GOP has so they're going to beat it to death until the elections. Interestingly, when there was a bipartisan fix on the table that gave them much of what they were demanding, they turned against it - even the jackasses WHO HELPED DRAFT IT - because Trump told them to. You want to fix the border? Take the GOP out of the equation. Period.
Well, I don’t vote just based on what will affect me personally. Otherwise, I’d probably be a Trump voter because there’s a better chance I’d pay less in taxes each year. But I will gladly pay more to help keep him and the GOP out of office.

My point was only to say that I fear the Dems sometimes minimize issues that they think people are not concerned about. It may not matter in the end, and hopefully Biden will prevail, but Trump doesn’t have to turn many people his way (or have them simply not vote), to win re-election.

I don’t know what this act is about but am starting to believe the immigration/border fiasco is going to cost Biden the election.

IMO, if you step back and look at it....
1) GOP is controlling the narrative, this is what the GOP has done far better than the Dems for as long as I can remember. Esp on this topic but in general they do a good job of creating panic and fear.
2) They will focus on the things they can make the Dems look bad on and beat the drum incessantly and eventually, many people will simply believe the alternate facts.
3) @tarheelbybirth , you may be correct in the "has it affected you?" but isn't that a short term perspective that folks knock when it comes to abortion, pollution, mass shootings. Just because it may not impact you on a day to day, you can find secondary impacts. And it does affect a lot of people. E.G. at the local level it is driving policies, federal is the roll up. I won't get an abortion, but it could impact my kids or friends...

Biden campaign needs to be aggressive and play a heavy hand on messaging from now until Nov, I also have concerns that the GOP will outmaneuver the MESSAGING, regardless of the actual. Perception is reality and they have been the master of this in the past. Im with @Formerly Rockymtnole , I have concerns about the outcome regardless of reality. I am not assuming an easy W even though it should be.

Why do they want to deport illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes? That increases the risk of them simply crossing back into the United States and committing another violent crime. Put them on trial and if convicted make them serve their sentence here so we know justice is being served.
I mean who doesn’t love paying for an illegal to sit and rot away in our amazing jails.

I don’t generally like the heart strings named laws and acts to just be pushed through. Maybe we need to read this one and not just push it through for the name.
That would defeat the whole reason republicans are pushing for it.

Democratic senators sat down with GOP senators and crafted a bipartisan deal to at least begin to address immigration. The GOP got much of what they wanted in that bill. It was torpedoed by Donald Trump. There's no attempt there to minimize anything on the Democratic side. There was an attempt to address an issue. If anyone is minimizing it, it would be the party that refuses to do anything about it even after they craft a deal to do something about it.

All the GOP wants is to scare you with it - fixing it isn't in their agenda. There are no fixes for ANYTHING in their agenda.

You are

open a book and turn off tiktok or TV and my guess is your opinion would change.
I read plenty of books along with many other sources. I don't get on tiktok for politics the only time I use it really is when friends and family send me funny or heartwarming videos. I get my news from a variety of sources unlike it seems you do. I have a brain and don't fall for right wing propaganda. I have many issues with the left but the right is currently a much bigger threat.

One of these slogans fits on a bumper sticker. That is the winning path.... business idea....

"2024 Easy Pick - The Old Guy > The Rapist"
"91 charges and a b*tch ain't one! ( he was guilty in that one)"
"My President can run a business in NYC"

Again, you aren't wrong. But you are not thinking about "the average voter". This "well we are right!" approach is how Bush beat Gore.

That bill is so boring compared to the In Memoriam for the late great Laken Riley who was basically killed by the hands of Joe Biden bill. There isn't any unnecessary insults attached to it or anything.
Tired Pbs Nature GIF by Nature on PBS

If you go on vacation to France and someone accuses you of a crime, you still get a fair trial under their laws. Same with the UK, Germany and pretty much any democracy. They don't say "Well she's not a citizen so just punish her, no trial needed."

Every person deserves a trial.
I don’t really disagree. The US treats foreign nationals who come here illegally extremely well. Far better than most countries.
Notice how the expected Haitian illegals are going to Guantanamo though? BTW Gitmo has previously been used to house other waves of Haitians.

Well compared to who though?

Are they countries we would want to be compared to in other things?

its amazing to watch people abruptly pivot away from the fact that they don't actually know what's in the constitution that they never stop claiming to love
Do you know most people assume it’s citizens that are protected.

It’s less than ideal, to be sure. But I would argue that it’s less horrible than deporting him and just hoping that Venezuela’s sketchy legal system prevents him from coming back to the United States and killing another young woman.
Considering what we already spend on prisons I’d argue the percentage related to illegals is a fairly small portion.

While not downplaying what happened here’s let’s also acknowledge that the notion that illegal immigrants are a major portion of violent crimes in the USA is not an accurate depiction.

I would think if they are here undocumented they would probably do their best to keep from drawing the attention of law enforcement. Most of them probably are much more careful not to break any laws than your average American citizen.

Or you could just get rid of him altogether and make an example for the illegals coming in and committing murders. Not like they have earned any rights.

Even if you sentence him to death, the appeals process is going to have him sitting in a jail cell for years.

My point is that if an undocumented immigrant is accused of committing a violent crime here in the United States then I want him to stand trial here in the United States and serve his sentence here in the United States.

That way we know justice is being served and we’re not relying on some third world legal system to protect us from recidivism.
