Session II Thread

Did anyone else notice we lost one match all day we "should" have won?
True and that was 13 vs unseeded so not a huge upset by seed. By record it looked worse. We need to have better guys in better position seed wise to win these things. Stoll being hurt cost 10-15 points IMO.

We could actually be feeling a lot worse. Look at Realbuto.

Kinda funny but Flo was talking about the Ramos vs Meyer likely second round. Both Willie and Christian were like Nahhhhh, Meyer doesn't get by Ramos. I was nodding my head in the car like....Yup.

Yes, we have some bad luck just way it happens to go. Like also today Dance getting beat so Mega has a easier route to the finals. oAll these upsets tell you what Gable always said: "don't give a dam how good you are if you are not ready to go and go hard for 7 mins someone not worthy will kick your ass"...Go Hawks kick some tomorrow.

NEW YORK CITY -- Five Hawkeyes advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships followingsecond round action Thursday night in Madison Square Garden.

Thomas Gilman (125), won by major decision and Cory Clark (133), Brandon Sorensen (149), Sammy Brooks (184), and Nathan Burak (197) all advanced with decisions.

Iowa is in a three-way tie for fifth place with Missouri and Virginia Tech. The Hawkeyes have 17.5 points, 10 behind tournament leader Penn State. Ohio State and Oklahoma State are tied for second place with 24 points, and Nebraska is in fourth with 20.

It's easy for all of us to get bent out of shape over early team scores, but they're almost meaningless. The quarters are huge and will start to separate the top few teams from the rest. If the Hawks take care of business, we should start to pull away from the NE's and VT's of the world. I think we end up top 4 with a fighting shot at 2nd, duking it out with Okie State and tOSU.

Heavyweight is huge for our battle with tOSU. If Snyder doesn't come back, they're barely top 4, and even with Snyder we're well ahead of them with a healthy Stoll. Snyder coming back adds about 20 to their team total and losing Stoll costs us about 15. That's about a 35-point swing, just based on one weight class!

NEW YORK CITY -- Five Hawkeyes advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships followingsecond round action Thursday night in Madison Square Garden.

Thomas Gilman (125) won by major decision and Cory Clark (133), Brandon Sorensen (149), Sammy Brooks (184), and Nathan Burak (197) all advanced with decisions.

Iowa is in a three-way tie for fifth place with Missouri and Virginia Tech. The Hawkeyes have 17.5 points, 10 behind tournament leader Penn State. Ohio State and Oklahoma State are tied for second with 24 points, and Nebraska is in fourth with 20.

Iowa has two wrestlers still alive on the back side of the bracket. Alex Meyer, who dropped a 10-9 decision in the opening round, rebounded with a 6-2 win over the fourth-seeded Ethan Ramos of North Carolina at 174. Edwin Cooper, Jr. won his opening round bout but was dropped to the consolation bracket after getting pinned in round two.

The Hawkeyes lost Patrick Rhoads at 165 and Sam Stoll at 285. Rhoads lost his final match as a Hawkeye, 6-3, and Stoll medically forfeited from the tournament.

“There was some good, there was some bad,” said UI head coach Tom Brands. “We are focusing on the good because it’s what’s going to keep us in the team race, and it’s what’s going to keep us in the accolades race. That’s what we have to do.”

Gilman is in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year. He scored bonus points in both of his bouts, and has scored bonus points in all five of his postseason wins.

“The game plan is always being aggressive,” Gilman said. “Have to keep that dogfight there.”

Brooks is also in the quarterfinals for the second straight year. He won by technical fall in the opening round and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 10-8 win in the second round.

“I am just trying to stay with my stuff, not over thinking it,” Brooks said. “Keep wrestling hard, trusting my condition, my coaches, and my skills.”

Sorensen is in the quarterfinals for the first time. He lost in the second round a year ago before running off five consecutive wins on the back side of the bracket to earn All-America honors. Clark and Burak are both two-time All-Americans, and both are making their third straight appearance in the quarterfinals.

All five Hawkeye quarterfinalists are the favorite on paper to advance to the semis.

“It’s the first day, we’re a third of the way through it. We have a long road to go and we’re excited for what’s in front of us,” Brands said.

The NCAA quarterfinals and consolation rounds begin Friday at 10 a.m. (CT). ESPNU and ESPN3 will provide television and online coverage.

Blair's post made me think: we haven't seen that one Nebby post around that was adamant Lambert to beat Gilman in the dual, have we? I mean Gilman almost majored him in the dual and then proceeds to major him the next two times out. Good times had by all....

Sueflohn makes me a bit nervous. Even though Sorensen has had his number, he's a goer. Brandon needs to get out early and put points on the board.

Screw it. I give up. Now I am getting a "you are not authorized to view this content" - WTF! I can watch the main feed but can't get the individual mats.

Hopefully you got to each match? If not than i think you probably got to the espy.go.com and choose wrestling. You should see the 8 matches. If you look on the right side you will see 4 or 5 matches and you can click on any of them. The problem you probably had was you need to go to the far right side, about 1/4 to 1/8 " from the side and then you can move the side bar up and down to get to all 8 mats. Also you should find a screen that talks about the ncaa wrestling only. If you click on this you will get all 8 matches again and if you look carefully you can see who is wrestling on what mat and then go back to the far right edge and choose the match you want to watch. Hopefully you'll see this tomorrow and be able to get to the matches. I was having the same problem but somehow stumbled across that right edge. Sometimes it will lock up and you'll need to pick another match or back out and go back and sign into espy again....

To be fair, Ramos is a beast with a tank that never ends. It's clear he is either very sick or has an undisclosed injury. What we saw yesterday was not the real Ethan Ramos.

bad luck just way it happens to go?
bad luck just way it happens to go?
So TnT need to hire a good witch doctor too?
Or do they coach up a team that doesn't need a witch doctor?
bad luck just way it happens to go. Get serious. Get grammar.

We only lost one match that we "should" have won. Considering where we are in the standings, some people might view this as somewhat unsettling. Others would say everything is fine. I'm curious if you think the fact that we only lost one match that we should have won to be an optimistic sign or a pessimistic one.

Big picture, everything isn't "fine." We haven't won a title since 2010. But constantly dwelling on that, especially during the season, doesn't do anyone any good. And it is annoying.

But when it comes to this tournament it is certainly a good thing.

Anyone looking at team scores right now is near clueless. Especially getting pissy over a few points.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. We're doing about as well as can be expected, considering who we have and the kinds of seasons they've had. But by the end of Session I we were already out of the team race, which is kind of depressing.

I'll agree that, other than the fact that PSU is likely running away with this, the current standings don't tell a complete picture.

If top 4 is now good enough things sure have changed in Iowa Wrestling.
I'm not hearing many people saying that they are happy about not winning, but most of these responses are being made to the doom and gloom "this program is spiraling downward" comments. The fact is that Penn State is the only program that is clearly better than us right now. Many of us aren't happy about it, but we aren't about to finish 15th at nationals either.

If this is a "downward spiral", about 95% of college wrestling programs would absolutely love to be in a downward spiral.
