This is a tough contest to make predictions on because of the youth but here are a couple.
This will be a game in which both teams score. I'm figuring low 80s.

Because of our youth, and being our first major test, the most experienced frontcourt player will make a couple of plays to put us in a position to win: Uhl.

Hawks 79-71. I think Cook has a big game to introduce himself to primetime.

I am going to be there tonight but I think this will be a tough, tough game for us. Seton Hall is really good and has a lot of returning experience and added a grad transfer from Wake Forrest. The Big East has already beaten Purdue & Wisconsin. I expect them to get up into us. Besides Jok few of our guys have faced pressure and physicality in a role as a major contributor.

A win here would be surprising and I could see us getting blown out if the youngsters wilt under pressure. This should be an excellent opportunity to learn and grow from. If by chance we get a win that would be huge.

Still sticking with my prediction of a win. To risk making a total fool of myself here's why.

Home game.
We're pretty good. Still learning, but pretty good.
Seton Hall struggled in their first game, against Fairleigh Dickinson, only up 33-28 at half before pulling out a 21 point win. FD shot just 29% in the first half.
While I agree they've got talent I'm hopeful it is Illinois type talent, just a wild hope.
Their top five minutes guys have played 62.5% of the minutes in the first two games. Ours, 52.5%. I like that our games have been more like practices.
We've both got four double digit scorers. After that we've got a 9.5, 8.0 and 7.0. Them? 6.5, 4.5, 4.0.
Peter Jok

I think we're deeper. I think that is the key.

Hawks are narrow favorites just about anywhere you look. I agree - let's go with a 76-74 win.

I think we nip them in the end but the margin will be under 5 points. I see a lot of full & 3/4 court pressure to try and turn them over and get them rattled. Maybe we can get them into foul difficulties which should favor us during the course of the game and the lively crowd pushes the Hawks home with a narrow win.

I think the Hawks win because they are at home.

Except for Iowa State, most power conference teams that come into Carver for a non-con game seem to be a little lethargic and not that up for the game. I think that continues tonight.

I got the hawks winning tonight. Gonna be a battle and I wouldn't be shocked if Fran "trims" down the rotation a little, I am guessing he plays 10 guys tonight.

Iowa 75
SH 72

This is a tough team with four regulars back, a dominant, crafty center, a team that won 25 last year and beat Villanova, the national champs. They start four juniors and a senior. Last year half our squad was playing teams like Storm Lake, CR Xavier, Iowa City West and prep schools. I don't see an Iowa win, but I won't mind being pleasantly surprised.

Hey guys, Hall fan here. Feel free to drop by the board if you want to see some scouting reports, it's very active.

I can't see the Hall losing this one, and that's no disrespect. SHU has a lot of people looking at the team with the thought "they might be experienced, but they lost Isaiah Whitehead". That is true, that was a key component to the team last year. And I won't say that we're better for it, but the emphasis and expectations on the juniors are that much greater. This is a deep team and a team that does a lot of things well, except (ugh) free throws. Beat Villanova last year in the Big East Championship, but also gave them 2 very tough games in losses and beat #5 Xavier twice. Many of these kids have been playing together or in the same circles since high school and now 4 of them are juniors. I've seen a lot of "teams" in my SHU days that were a collection of individuals, this is a team...

Starters:
Khadeen Carrington - smooth guard, can drive and shoot. Being groomed to move to the point, as Whitehead was last year. Will be the one to step into IW's role as the guy who has the ball when a bucket is needed.
Angel Delgado - monster inside. When he wants it, nearly unstoppable. Plays with too much emotion, but if kept under control he could be one of the best big men you'll face all year.
Desi Rodriguez - match up nightmare. 6'6" that will shoot 3s over smaller guys or abuse bigger guys with his athleticism. Explosive player, could score 2 points or 20.
Ishmael Sanogo - 3rd year of a 4 year project that could take a kid from under-recruited to being a potential all-BE player. Year 1 you never saw him, year 2 he became the best defensive player on the team, year 3 the rumor is he learned to shoot. But if he's shooting, we're doing something wrong. I'd imagine he will be on Jok.
Madison Jones - grad transfer point, great assist to turnover, can slash, can't shoot.

Key reserves:
Myles Powell - freshman, great shooter, cut 45 lbs over the last year and is now a better slasher. Has struggled with his shot, freshman jitters. At some point in some game, he'll go 5-6 from 3 and the rest will be history.
Michael Nzei - You won't see much difference when he's in over Ish. Better offense, lesser defense.
Rashed Anthony/Myles Carter - Back up 5s, not pretty. If they give Delgado a break and try not to impact the game, they can be useful. Still works in progress
Veer Singh - 6'9" 3-pt shooter that just has not put his game together. Will give Desi a rest at the 3, might hit a 3, not a huge liability but not a great asset at this point.
Eron Gordon - younger brother to Eric Gordon, freshman, potential but won't see much.
Dalton Soffer - if he plays then one of the fan bases will be very happy.
Michael Dowdy/Manny Anderson - walk-ons.

You will see 10-11 players get minutes, with Carter/Gordon/Soffer in the 11/12/13 spots.

If the Hall plays tough defense and can slow you down, it's a 68-60 win. That's a Big East score. If it plays open and loose, I see it 84-72 Hall.

And now that I've thoroughly jinxed it, final should be Iowa 80-58.

Think we need a lower scoring game to win. Guessing 71-67 for the good guys. Let's see CW come to age tonite and take over this game. Go Hawks!!

I am really excited how our young guards will handle the pressure of going against some good competition. This will tell us a whole lot on the direction of the team moving forward IMO. If we can keep the TO's low and play tough defense I think we pull out a close one. Really pumped to see how our young guys handle the pressure. My key questions are obviously the TO battle? Does Dom Uhl step up? And how do our young bigs do against A tough front court of Seton Hall? This will give us a good glimpse on the future of the season. But being the pessimistic Hawk fan that I am I will take Seton Hall 84-76

I'm going with a high scoring game.

92-87 Hawks
Jok with 30
Cook with a double/double

Until our Hawks prove they can defend a legit team I'm finding it very hard to predict a win against decent competition. There's a lot of growing that needs to happen on defense including defensive reboundibg.

That's a pretty long list of "the best" for Delgado to be included.
Isaac Haas, Nigel Hayes, Ethan Happ, Caleb Swannigan, Thomas Bryant, OG Anunoby, Miles Bridges...

Sami a lot of our fans have no idea of what they are talking about nor have any idea of how good you guys are. Outside of Jok we are really young and inexperienced. Would like to eat major crow but I just hope we can keep it close or catch you on an off night.

I know what I'm talking about. They are picked to finish 3rd or 4th in the Big East. As to depth? Have a look for yourself:

Yes they'll be a challenge, but are you REALLY offering to eat crow. Which is by definition so gawdawful you'll never boast again, or are you just talking.

No doubt. I think he could surprise you as SHU does not get a favorable press. We need to have some success to be back in the national picture, not just one good year.

Angel was down to Kentucky and SHU. I can't say for sure exactly how the dredges of basketball recruiting work, but Orlando Antigua was recruiting him for Kentucky, backed off, he ends up going to SHU to play for Oliver Antigua (SHU assistant), then the next year Oliver is out of his contract to join his brother Orlando on the South Florida staff.

Who knows how it went down, but he was that caliber of a recruit. Isaiah Whitehead got the most press, but Angel is solid.

Hope after tonight you say, damn, guess that's what you meant. But we'll see.

I'll take 3rd behind the defending national champs and what could be other top 10 teams. But there is a major spotlight on the loss of Isaiah Whitehead, but our true fans are looking at the development of 4 juniors that have played together in the NY/NJ AAU circuit since high school.

That said, no outcome is off the table from one blowout extreme to the other.

Absolutely I will back my words up. I would not offer to eat crow if unwilling. I am not sure why you would question that?

Let's be reminded that Nova RAN us out of the gym last season and Seton Hall beat them and hung with them the other games as pointed out by Sami. They return that nucleus minus Whitehead. The Big East has already beat 2 of the better teams in our league. They are an excellent basketball league. We have a lot of youth that I am excited about too but are they ready for the prime time? We are going to find out. If you watched in person against inferior competition to date you notice things like deficiencies in rebounding, understanding team defensive concepts and unnecessary foul trouble. Those things might be glaring tonight.

This matchup mirrors the same set up last year when we went into Marquette with an experienced group minus White (our best player the year before) and they were talented but inexperienced. What happened? We ran them out of the gym.

.

I'm just a strict stickler to the metaphor of eating crow. :) I don't think you should have to eat it if we get beat. You made clear there are other possibilities such as one team having an off night.

You see, crow was not the bird, but in Medieval times it was the name for the parts of animals which no one could eat. And they ate about anything back then. So a story arose, and was later attributed as well to a story about a farmer in the 1700's Colonies, if I recall. Anyway, the point is the man was so certain about everything, and would boast to the point of extreme irritation. Others would point out his errors and he became so determined to be right that one day he said, "If I'm wrong, I'll eat crow!". Well, he was wrong, and he ate the crow, and was never heard to boast of his certainties ever again.

Similar to the saying, "I'll eat my hat!", dangerously confident acts.

You didn't do that. Just can't bare the thought of you with curdled goat throat lining or some such thing in your mouth for simply saying what you think. Not when you are kind enough to be humble about it.

If Iowa's 3PT shooters are "on" tonight the Hawkeyes can most definitely win, and that goes for any other ranked B10 team as well. Jok, Ellingson, Baer, Bohannon, Williams,(Jones?) need to bring their guns to CHA tonight.

One thing is certain if we find a way to beat these guys that's a great win and springboard for the season. Either way the kids will gain valuable experience as we have another 5 tough non cons coming.

Hello Sami,
What you will get from Iowa tonight is anybody's guess.
What I can tell you is it starts with Peter Jok. He can light it up from anywhere. His shot is smooth and he gets it off very quickly. He has worked on his ball handling and post up game and occasionally he will take it to the hole as well but if you give him space anywhere outside he can bury you with three' s
After that we will just have to see. Cook is our inside threat but has supposedly a nice shot too out to 3 point range. He is quick off the floor and likes to dunk any chance he gets. Penal is another freshman 6'8" 240 or so that doesn't explode off the floor like Cook but has very good moves inside and so far has taken advantage against lesser competition and I dunno is shooting like 70% or better from the field.
The big question is our "point" guard, the parentheses are because Iowa this year plays a more position less brand of basketball. We won't wait to get the ball in his hands off a rebound. Most of are players say one or 2 handle the ball pretty well so rebound and go. Chris Williams plays the point fir us but he is closer to 6'7" than 6'5" and has over a 7' wingspan. So far he has been very efficient with the ball .He is a very good finisher at the rim and quick enough to drive by you if you aren't focused. As a team we are long and the bench is deep. We haven't yet shortened our bench mostly because the competition is pretty tight for thirteen players but 10 are freshman, red shirt freshman or sophomores . They all are athletes and our style will be to mix up defenses 3/4 court pressure, man, zones. And we will run at every opportunity, but not play hellter skelter. It should be fun. You guys are going to give us a good gauge on where we are at just now but our trajectory is rising but where we are on that rise we will learn tonight I think.

Home court advantage is huge in CB, plus Jok hot shooting and 2 freshmen step up, IA wins! 78-70.

DanL I really hate the fact I have to tell you I told you so. Much rather be eating at the crow buffet right now.

Like this team still. Lost to a good team tonight but fought hard. Have to work on D and rebounding.

Bump for And1Hawk to get all the jollies he wants. I said I'd risk making a total fool of myself.

Go Hawkeyes! I'll even double down and predict a win over Virginia!!!

Too funny. You are a good sport. I'd be thrilled with a victory over Virginia and return the props to you if they do.

Tell you what, if we don't win, I'll change my Avatar to the fool, for a week. (On Monday, away from computer starting tomorrow, except for priority needs.)
