Let me just praise Beth, Ben and UI marketing for really leaning in on this image of the white shirt and gold tie. I could totally foresee hundreds of students dressing up and really rekindling the Hawks Nest just by dressing up in either the t-shirt mockup or just getting shirt and ties themselves.

We’ve been desperate for some sort of brand and identity for years, and this is something.

I had the same thought. Gonna get my old gold tie — a hand-me-down from my grandfather — out and wear it to church Sunday.

I think the shirt and tie is a boring gimmick. Need to come up with something more exciting to get students involved. Moving them to sitting around the court would be a good start.

There always has be that one guy
no shit--only thing he forgot is the downtown arena...

students don't deserve those seats based upon their involvement in the past 30 years---Tom Davis even mentioned this---

I would work out something in this next round of Carver Improvements where you can split them between the 2 ends--that means they would all be pretty close--but talk about copying ---ring the students around the court.........

Filling up Carver with students again is likely gonna take a lot of things. Shirt & tie is kinda fun, more busses (express) would be good, Carver enhancements might help, cheap tickets and better seating might attract more students.

Or, they could just do what the women did. Go get the best player in history that transcends the game.

Simple.

Not to mention Drake students already did this.
To each his own. My first thought was let's get Ben on board and see if the students pick up on that. No worse that not doing anything and I think it looks cool. But that's just my opinion. Iowa at least got the first part of the equation right, getting coach Ben on board. What comes after that with the students is up for debate.

So you think dressing up in a shirt and tie or buying and wearing a shirt is going to be more exciting for college students than sitting courtside?
Maybe boring but it is a start. As you said, getting students and fans back in the seats. But it is just a start. BG is planning on renovating Carver and hope they make some good choices. Definitely need the students sitting where they want to come and hard to get seats.

Coach McCollum talked about professionalism in regards to wearing a suit and tie on the court vice the more casual look which has become prominent. The Drake students picked up on it and great job by the Iowa marketing department to carry it on here to rev up excitement among the students. It will become a great tradition which will become part of our identity. We will like many things about the unique culture Coach McCollum instills around the program.

Iowa marketing should come up with more exciting ideas. But since they're also the same people who thought red pom poms at an Iowa-Wisconsin football game and doing 40 year old card stunts are great ideas, they probably won't.

There's a very small window to total flip momentum with the students. This will be the one and only chance to get them back during the BM tenure. Unless he rattles off some 30 win seasons.

You have to live in the moment and in this case seize the moment. The fact that we really stunk in athletic marketing in the past has nothing to do with the present.

Beth Goetz hasn't missed a step since taking over the AD position and it has become increasingly apparent she planned well for this. If you haven't seen the video they put out after the hire check it out. It has become a whole new ball game in mens basketball and we have witnessed just the start.

Hawkeyes wear black jerseys, Ben should wear a black shirt with a gold tie. Hawkeyes wear gold jerseys, he should wear a gold shirt with a black tie. White jerseys, white shirt with a black or yellow tie.

Link to the video?

Here’s a thought: seat the students in a V corner at CHA. One side of the V starts “Tastes great!” while the other side responds “Less filling!” Great fun! Build excitement!

Nah. We’re not going for the guido look.

I don't think turning Ben into a cartoon character is the best idea. I am all for him dressing how he sees fit.

With students we have a seating issue and a transportation issue that I believe can be fixed. Free Carver transportation to/from the game on Carver only busses back and forth. Beth needs to figure out the student seating as that needs to be a part of the "pitch" to the students.

I am not educated on the price of student tickets but I would say whatever they charge if you get season tickets the price will not change while you are a student. Hell, show your season ticket pass and you get a slice of pizza and coke free as well. All sorts of things can be done.

My guess is Ben will be doing his best to connect with student body, dorms, frats, players visible, etc. Sell the transportation...sell the pricing...sell the seating. Huge tip-off event at the Ol Cap a day or two before the first game.

Bottom line is let Ben be Ben.....if he is just like his first press conference, the students and every Hawk fan will take to him big time!

Get some Tee shirt company to come up with a long sleeve white tee shirt with the gold tie dyed into the shirt, and DEFENSE in vertical letters on the tie. Give them away to the students...
Start it with the pep band as well. And give away to the student section. Heck, for the big ten opener, have a tshirt give away to the entire arena.

here is the thing--BM wears the same shirt and tie combo every game--he does it for a reason--he wants the players ot know that putting in the time and effort every day will get them desired results.
Drake students did not wear the ties to games--if you went to Drake games they had the same issue Iowa had--very few showed up at most games-
during the conference tournament the front row was lined with the shirt and tie and it was not students--it was Dolph Pullium and Drake boosters--so the old guard was doing the tie bit.
If the students pick up on it fine--if not, fine, but before any of that the U really needs to reconnect with them which is something fran never really attempted to do and it showed at the end.
Sounds like coach is going to do exactly that--Beth needs to help him out as well....
