Shot of the crowd tonight

I was a bit shocked at all the empty seats. Most of the other games looked like packed houses. I live out west is basketball not that big in IC anymore? Thought the Hawkeye fans would have supported the team better.

Go easy on the guys.... At least they showed up!!! The last one chewing on his ID just about put me over the edge though.

Late game and a Carver Hawkeye arena that hasn't been upgraded since it was built in 1983, "the arena area I'm talking about", heck I bet that I of 3 TV monitors that face the upper seats on every side, haven't been replaced that were out 2 years ago....has the special area to honor past Hawkeye greats been added yet, probably only lib service from our AD. If I sound bitter, I'm tired of all the money going to Kinnick Stadium.....

Not a valid excuse for not attending. Sorry.

It was late Wednesday night. And I presume several fans who would have been there are preparing to travel to Indianapolis as early as perhaps Friday morning?

There is a game this Saturday as well. I highly doubt it will be well attended. That is I mean, the basketball game.

Wasn't Iowa in the top twenty in basketball attendance last season? Although it certainly isn't the old days when sellouts were common, things have changed all over. It's the Big Ten Network and several ESPN channels and if that isn't enough we've got FOX sports as well. And more. Attendance problems all over are going to get worse before anything comes along to make it worth going to the games again.

I believe I caught a glimpse of the concession stand (I live too far away to attend games anymore.) and did I see a Hamburger for $7.00? And a drink for $5.50? Hmmm...it wouldn't take too many of those to blow the wad I might be saving for one of those elephant sized HD televisions they sell these days. Especially if I started going to Movies as well.

I don't live in Iowa anymore but used to attend games w/ season tickets and I'm saying that it was noticable how empty Carver looked which shocked me. Fran has built a great exciting product and the team wins 20+ games a year but people aren't showing up? It's gotta be disappointing to players. FSU is a good athletic undisciplined team so it was a quality game to attend, unlike Missouri/Kansas City coming up Saturday. I know concessions are ridiculous but you don't have to buy their crap. I'd rather just go see the game and eat earlier. Maybe its because the football team is so successful that people aren't in hoops mode yet. Either way, its disappointing as a fan to see the lack of a turnout. I'm not criticizing people for not going, I just don't understand it.

830 games are always going to be a tough sell here. It basically limits travel distance to about 25 miles or not get home until after midnight. That rarely works for people with families.

Those of you in this thread making fun of how people look should be ashamed. The fact is they were there cheering on the Hawks...if you want to criticize or question anyone, question the thousands of empty seats, not the fans that were there cheering on the Hawks. Its disgusting what some of you have posted in this thread as it relates to the appearance of some of the fans at the game, especially if you are making fun of individuals with disabilities. Shameful, absolutely shameful.

Hey Quintana...have you ever attended a special olympics event? Have you ever worked or volunteered with adults that have disabilities? Do you have any family members that are special needs? You should be ashamed. I would suggest you grow up and volunteer at the special olympics sometime this year, it might change your attitude as it relates to people with special needs, you have the mentality and sensitivity of a 6yr old. Grow up.

There was more than 6K there

This. I was there also and I would agree. The crowd did get pretty loud at a few points, but I too was disappointed with the turnout. I understand the time wasn't perfect--I got into bed a tad after midnight--but a good ACC opponent. Imagine when it's -5 out.

What part of your ass did you pull that out of?

Boxscore says 11,200.

Even with an undefeated football team this year, only one game sold out, with thousands of empty seats for each of the other 6 games. Times have changed, people.

You are correct. Not making excuses, but because of television scheduling it makes it even less attractive to attend a home game, especially if you live more than 30 miles away from Iowa City. Weeknight 8:15 tip, if you live in DSM you aren't getting home until after midnight.

Its really too bad teams are forced to tip off at 8pm or beyond to accommodate cable networks and their schedules. Additionally, we have only a handful of Saturday afternoon games which is the ideal time for fans to make it to a game. Schools are put in a tough position...they want to have full houses but are at the mercy of the networks that televise the games. You know the school would love to have Saturday afternoon games every week, but that isn't left up to us.

With these challenges, it makes it that much more important to get students and folks that live in the IC/CR corridor to games, we can no longer count on folks that live outside a 90 minute radius from Iowa City with so many weekday games tipping off late.

i knew as soon as i posted that i was going to get chastised. and i deserve it.

fortunately, no i do not have any special needs in my family, and i have a lot of respect for the people who live with that burden everyday. perhaps i should follow your advice and become more involved, it might give me an even better, deeper appreciation of their devotion.

i regret saying what i said, even more so if it's true that those kids are in a special program. they were just having fun.

i apologize and i thank you for making a point of it.

Thanks for replying and admitting what you said was insensitive and disrespectful. I had the pleasure of working with adults with disabilities for three years, part time while in college then full time for a a little over a year after graduating. Inspiring and beautiful people that are too often dismissed and ridiculed in society. This thread and some of the comments certainly hit a nerve and I felt compelled to reply. Thanks for owning up and acknowledging comments that you wish you could take back, that is a great start. And yes, I would highly recommend becoming involved in local programs that provide services to individuals with disabilities. Whether its in the form of a donation or volunteering, it makes a huge difference, not only for you but those that desperately need the help and support.

This is a great time touch on this subject with the holiday season in full swing. Instead of spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars on meaningless gifts and material items, perhaps consider donating to local charities that support individuals with disabilities, that money will be much better spent in the long run. Who needs another flannel shirt, or pair of socks that will sit in the drawer. That money can go towards folks that really need clothing, or it could help provide funding for mentoring in the workplace so individuals with disabilities can mainstream and find gainful employment. Its a segment of society that needs our help and compassion, not ridicule and insensitivity.

This entire thread is disappointing. Go to the games if you aren't happy with "the crowd"
If you live a few states away that becomes problematic. Guy is rebuilding the program, had a couple of tourney appearances in a row and this crowd is as good as we can do? BB fan support is bad. Feel bad for Fran and the team.

I'm going to guess that 50-60% of the public & staff season tic holders were in attendance last night...a third of the student section.

I live a long plane ride away from Iowa now. I still make it back to basketball games every other year. Came back to a football game this year and I will be going to the bowl game and maybe to B1G championship if I can reschedule a meeting today. Many of the excuses on here dont seem like national excuses as many teams still sellout or have a pretty packed house no matter the time or price of concessions. I heard the other night that Nebraska has soldout a couple times including what sounded like ltwo nights ago. Why is it then when the camera pans out do we see large sections of empty seats at Carver? I watched a lot of the B1G/ACC games and Carver was one of the few that had large sections of empty seats, most had a packed house.
