Shot of the crowd tonight

Late game and a Carver Hawkeye arena that hasn't been upgraded since it was built in 1983, "the arena area I'm talking about", heck I bet that I of 3 TV monitors that face the upper seats on every side, haven't been replaced that were out 2 years ago....has the special area to honor past Hawkeye greats been added yet, probably only lib service from our AD. If I sound bitter, I'm tired of all the money going to Kinnick Stadium.....

"Lib service?" LOL!

Great WOB.

I was a season ticket holder for the 8 years I was lucky enough to live in Iowa City during the 70s and 80s. When they built Carver Hawkeye, I wondered why they didn't make it bigger, because fans loved Iowa BB and demand for tickets was really high. I am surprised that fans haven't gotten excited again about Iowa basketball, because Fran has brought the team back to being a top half of the B1G program, which is not easy. I guess times change. I wish I could make it back for some games.

So, this guy looks to be at the game, having a good time & supporting the Hawks. Some of you proceed to mock him. Those of you that joined in, I bet your parents are proud of the kid they raised (assuming you're actually an adult).

Sheesh...

At game last night and little surprised it was that empty expected little more for ACC team. If we'd been playing Gardner Webb I'd figure that's what it'd be. But other hand can understand why some may have stayed home. Don't get as many people from DSM or QC for game starting at 815 when you can stay home and watch it during the work week. My one big complaint with Carver last night is lack of replays. Ridiculous how few they are ever show during the game let alone controversial ones.

As for start of the thread pretty pathetic people making fun of the kid at an Iowa game enjoying himself who had no clue he was being filmed. Let's be honest I'm sure plenty of us on here are not the best looking people in the world or have acted pretty stupid celebrating an Iowa win. Sure ESPN has to be proud of Hassel posting that on social media making fun of someone, real classy...

I was there, and the crowd was pathetic. I get that it was an 8:20pm tip, but the weather isn't going to get any better over the next couple of months, and we were actually playing a real opponent - the only time that will happen in our home non-conference schedule this season. The students have no excuse whatsoever to not show up. That being said, the product on display was pretty poor, and the viewing experience in Carver seems to get worse every year, at least relative to the world around it. The audio/visual effort and hardware is on par with something you would expect in a junior high library. And if I ever find the person who thought it would be a good idea to play the Spice Girls during a timeout, I will probably disembowel them.

It would not be that hard to improve things in Carver, but they treat the place like our athletic department is bouncing checks or something. Terrible.

When "well tell me what you want, what you really really want..." started I just shook my head. And for all those poking fun at others on camera, to say NOTHING of the possibility being special needs, nobody looks good doing the damned burrito lift.

For a guy that makes 2 or 3 games every couple of years, you seem to have pretty strong feelings about our lack of attendance.

I think I do pretty good considering when I fly back to Iowa to catch a game I end up spending anywhere between $700 to $1,200 for the entire trip. When I fly the family back to a game Im spending $1,500 to $2,000 a trip. Considering after the bowl game I will have spent over $5,000 on attending Iowa sporting events this year I think thats a nice commitment. When I lived in Iowa I had season tickets to both football and basketball and that cost me much much much less then $5,000 a year in total expenses. So yeah I dont understand the excuses of fans living in Iowa of not attending games.

Worst shot of the nite was a half empty building.

Where were the fans tonite?

You must of not seen Cameron Indoor last night? It was only about half full as well. They showed a shot of the students and then about 10 rows above them it was empty and in the corners there was no one.

So its not just Iowa.

Iowa did well in paid attendance last year and were #20th in the nation with 14,101 each game.

http://www.big12sports.com/pdf9/3659007.pdf

It just surprises me so much that such a large percentage of the ticket purchasers didn't show up.

Even in the bad recent bad years at Iowa St (ex - McDermott era), they no only sold a lot of tickets to watch a crappy team, but people still showed up at a high percentage. Now with a good team, very few seats are empty and when they are it's in the balcony level of the student section.

I live a long plane ride away from Iowa now. I still make it back to basketball games every other year. Came back to a football game this year and I will be going to the bowl game and maybe to B1G championship if I can reschedule a meeting today. Many of the excuses on here dont seem like national excuses as many teams still sellout or have a pretty packed house no matter the time or price of concessions. I heard the other night that Nebraska has soldout a couple times including what sounded like ltwo nights ago. Why is it then when the camera pans out do we see large sections of empty seats at Carver? I watched a lot of the B1G/ACC games and Carver was one of the few that had large sections of empty seats, most had a packed house.

Pinnacle Arena has 1 million people within 45 minutes of the arena and very competitive pricing for season tickets. It's a lot more convenient for the fan base to get there on a weeknight.

Exactly correct applaude those who came, but those who refuse to, well, that was embarrasing. Worst crowd ever for a game of that magnitude early in the year.

Regardless of the crowd last night, as mentioned in other threads previously......Barta push back on the Big 10/Big 10 Network and get a few home Saturday games next year.

The mid-week 8 PM starts are also tough for those that drive from Des Moines or Cedar Falls.

Historically speaking over the past 40 years, Iowa has been near the top in the country in MBB attendance. I really think the poor start times and lack on Saturday games on the schedule hurts.

Wednesday night at 8:30 with the football team headed for a little ole game on Saturday and ya wanna bash the crowd? Swing and a miss, my friend. Real people have jobs and kids have school on Thursdays.

College basketball is a made-for-TV event. If they wanna fill the seats, do like the game shows do...give tickets away... Hell, some of us don't even wanna stay up til 10:30 or 11:00 at home to watch a game let alone start driving home about then.

Play the game at 7:00 and you have a much better crowd, but TV won't allow it. You do realize Iowa has exactly ZERO Saturday Big Ten home games this year, right?

Be happy anybody showed up.

Where's Bobby Knight when you need him? Remember when he railed against 8:30 games(even later in Bloomington).

Florida State is not a big name draw. Wasn't the Notre Dame game two years ago around the same date and time. That was a full house. Maybe fans were more excited for hoops back then too. We might have been ranked

I drove almost 150 miles to the Cyclone/North Dakota State game Tuesday night. Not because they were playing a high powered team but because it was one of the only game tickets available when we ordered tickets on the first day they were available to the public. Apparently not many tickets were still available the day we ordered either because our seats were in the top row. There were a few empty seats in one section close to the floor that I think is usually reserved for students in other sports but otherwise was not only nearly sold out but the seats filled. I think it's more of the product being offered than the time of the game. I didn't get home until well after midnight and had to travel an hour to a 7:30 a.m. appointment in Iowa City the next morning so I think it all boils down to commitment of the fans rather than the hour of the game.

Thanks for your input, it really added to this discussion regarding Iowa basketball.

Weren't the students on break?

Also, Carver stinks. Always has, always will. Most of the fans are simply too far away from the court. It is a shame. They should blow it up and build a 12,000 seat arena where the fans are close to the action and the students are on the court, similar to MSU. They really need to do it, but I'm not sure where the money would come from....

Carver is still 10x better than the Wells-Fargo arena in Des Moines.

In the games I have been to at Carver, I didn't think it was that bad. Maybe it's just bad placement for where the students are or something as it doesn't seem to ever reflect the crowd's noise/enthusiasm as well as other places.

I have never understood the hate for Carver. I think it's a nice layout with no bad seat in the house. Might not be the loudest but who cares.... It's up to the fans to make noise, not the stadium to make the fans sound louder

I think it mostly shows that ISU doesn't get that many games on tv compared to Iowa, which has nearly every one of them on national tv.

Cyclonetv. Give me a break.

Your football team sucks so basketball is all the clowns have to get excited about. Clown fans wouldn't understand.

ISU has 5 games on Cyclones.tv all season. Doesn't Iowa have 6 games not televised this year?

As an ISU fan I won't miss any game either. Either way ISU plays more nationally televised games than Iowa

In case some of you didn't know the Cyclone TV channel is not just through the internet like the ESPN3 channel and is not just limited to viewing in Iowa. Mediacom has locations in 22 states. The Cyclone channel can also be viewed in some of those surrounding states, not just Iowa. I can't get access to Iowa games on ESPN3 either so that is no different. It depends on what provider you choose to carry. Iowa should have such coverage. Since Iowa is playing Iowa State Thursday night they used to play former matches between those schools a few days leading up to the game but thus far none is listed before Thursday night's game. They also show vintage games from way back so it's great if you are a fan.
