Should we complain about the refs?

Bad defense as usual, but some iffy calls down the stretch. That "nba continuation" was amusing for 2 freebies. Then Perkins strips Alexander clean but gets called for another 2 freebies. Then their 7footer gets stripped off the inbounds for 2 freebies. Sandfort appeared to get his arm whacked on a 3 pointer, but I guess we'll never know since FS1 couldn't manage to show a single replay. Uh, okay?

Exactly what I thought…no replay at one of the most critical plays/point in the game. Like WTF?!? If they call a foul there in act of shooting and Payton makes all 3 foul shots, it’s a 2 point game with about a 1:20 left. Oh well, not a bad loss for Iowa. Hawks will win a lot of games playing like that.

I thought the NBA continuation calls your referenced were the worst of the night.
Perkins got away with a foul on that possession near half court, kind of a wash.
Bowen raked their guy on the inbounds, probably a good call.
Would like to see replay of Sandfort 3, I assume he was fouled by his reaction

Don't forget the obvious 5 second violation after we cut it to 5...

But whatever, it's a pointless exercise to complain after the game. Nothing will change. I'll complain in the game thread just to vent.

On to Friday. Build on the good showing and Ws will come.

Pretty sad that the shitty ones far outweigh the good ones. Been this way for years. You’d think the amount of money flowing through the sport that things would change, but I guess not.

And add in the phantom foul on PS on a 3-pt make by Creighton in the first half and that RIDICULOUS continuation awarded to King on PM's foul to prevent an easy two and game is tied at that point if foul called on Peyton's 3pa and he makes all 3 FTs (again).

MBB officials and weather predictors are a lot alike, in that they can be wrong way more than they are right and still be gainfully employed.

Too busy whacking each other off about Alexander continually being "one assist away from his first career triple double!!!"

Bad defense as usual? There was great defense in that game. More to defense than points scored. Creighton is an ungodly shooting team. They can score 20 points in 2 minutes. I'm not saying they played perfect, but they looked much more poised defensively.
Most of their 3s were uncontested, and honestly they had a lot of easy layups/dunks on breakdowns as well where someone completely lost their guy. We also do nothing with our hands on defense, guys are not bothering the dribble, and when they foul, they foul weak as hell so that everything is an and1. There are many ways that this team could've shaved 10 points off Creighton's total tonight.

While I do agree we could/should have done better defensively, the effort was not the problem.

It looked like it was a very aggressive defense and we were looking to jump passing lanes. Something they must have seen on tape. We got caught in a few odd rotations and maybe a lack of communication.

Creighton also ran some great sets to get their big man open with no backside help.

I am not overly upset by anything that happened tonight. Great effort but got beat by a team that looks really good to start the year.

Iowa continues to play poor individual and team defense. But last night didn't look as bad as it's been at times during the Fran era.
It was an entertaining game to watch and they didn't get blown off the court by a team that has a lot of offensive firepower.
This game is not one to get worked up about.

Great points. My biggest fear each season is how much will crappy defense hold us back. This team seemed to hustle last night but a lot of the Fran staples were on full display.

Some of that I have to give credit to Creighton - that’s just a really good offensive team and with the pace of the game there were go to be lots of points.

not great, but I think they look more locked in defensively at times than we’re used to seeing. No field goals for Creighton the last 6 minutes of the game for example, which gave us a chance to claw our way back.

There was a stretch of really bad defense when creighton extended their lead. Yes some was just good shooting, but they were getting to the rim at times like it was a drill in practice.

The first half and the active hands to disrupt passing lanes was encouraging. But when momentum moved the defensive energy seemed to be on low.

Another Courtney Green Special for Iowa. I think the better team won and I'm not sure how much the officiating actually impacted the outcome of that game. It just seemed like every time Iowa started to get really close in the second half a bad call would end the run. On the other hand, as a team you need to be able to overcome those things and it's not like Iowa played perfect down the stretch either. Although they did play well. Creighton came out and dominated the first 8 minutes of the 2nd half and that was the difference in the game. What I really liked was once Fran finally let the starters get a break it was the freshmen who came in and started clawing our way back into the game. There's potential for this Iowa team to be far better in February if these freshmen keep improving.

I agree with most Iowa players play soft and foul weak, but Ladje knows how to foul. He hacked him and then landed on that dude. That put a smile on my face!

The continuation foul was an and 1 back breaker after we cut it to 6.

I’m just annoyed it’s always at the hands of Courtney Greene
It gets pretty goddamn old when you see these same guys over and over again and it always ends up going down as a horse shit referee job. EVERY DAMN TIME Courtney Greene or Larry Scirottto are involved these kinds of games happen. EVERY time. Why do these guys get hired to do games. Especially in conference season. During the low profile non-con games we always see random people I don't recognize and rarely walk away feeling they did a poor job. These spotlight guys, on the other hand, do it all the time.

You feel that way in the low profile non con games because we’re playing overmatched teams that we blow out. So a missed call here and there is no big deal. Guess what? Refs miss a few. Your coach doesn’t have to go apeshit every time it happens. And Creighton if you saw the stats just doesn’t foul much. Maybe it’s reputation, I don’t know. Or maybe the refs don’t like Fran. That’s certainly possible. He’s an easy guy not to like during the game.

There needs to be a challenge system in MBB on fouls or traveling. Give coaches challenges similar to FB.

Wisconsin had a reputation for not fouling. Guess what. They foul. And so does Creighton.

NO! We don't need another reason to break the flow of games. Players make mistakes. Coaches make mistakes. Referees are going to make mistakes. It's part of the game. Sometimes it works in your favor; sometimes it hurts.

With Krikke you're going to get the good with the bad, he's not a very good defensive player and pairing him with Patrick and Payton there really isn't much athleticism between the 3 of them to stop runs like Creighton had starting the 2 half. Bowen is who he is, a sophomore that is still finding his way in games like this and really hasn't shown much improvement on his shot from last year. Tony is falling into a bad habit of slow starts although this was only the 3rd game.
Coming back from a 17 point deficit and getting it down to 5 showed me they have fight and won't give up when things go south. Really like the 4 freshmen along with Dix to come in and add some athleticism and energy into the game. Hope Fran continues to play the young newbies together as they have a lot of chemistry between them....

I agree, the better team won. But you sort of admitted that the refs did have an effect on the game, and I agree. Also, we all know Fran benches players with 2 fouls. That didn't affect the game last night? The no call on Payton's 3 to cut it to 2? The "an 1" calls a couple times. Refs absolutely set the tone for a game and can kill a comeback, enhance a run, and force coaches into tough decisions (especially in a hostile environment). That's what I believe anyway.

You aren't wrong, but I just think even if the officials had made those calls Creighton, which had far more experience, would have stepped up and made plays to stay ahead. It would have been tougher for them in the 2nd half, that's for sure though.

Good point. They did sort of seem to let off the gas. I just hate that part of the game and maybe it's Iowa's undisciplined style that has them out of position so often (and fouling), so it feels worse for Hawk fans.

I liked the energy on the defensive end... even though it resulted in 90+ points... That being said, 1 team threw up 50% of their shots from behind the arc and somehow managed to get to the line more than the other team... that always seems weird to me.

Is any game worth getting worked up about? Referees ref, fouls are called or not, shots are made or not. During the game let out some emotion but let the sun come out the next day and be glad we have the team we have.
To me this team has more good players then any team we've had for some time but they're young.
