IOWA CITY — Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz described the Hawkeyes’ quarterback situation heading into Saturday’s matchup with Maryland as “clearly cloudy.”

Ferentz on Tuesday offered the following about the outlook of that position against Maryland:

  • If the game were to be played now, Jackson Stratton would be the starting quarterback.
  • Cade McNamara has been cleared but "whether or not he can play effectively or not, we'll see. We'll just see how the week goes," Ferentz said.
  • Brendan Sullivan is out this week due to injury. Ferentz added: “We’ll see what next week brings. I’m not optimistic. But I would assume (he’ll return) the bowl game. Nothing’s broken. So hopefully we get him back.”
  • On redshirt freshman Marco Lainez: “I think Marco Lainez will be back,” Ferentz said.
So yes, Ferentz is correct in his assessment of the position.

“Everything’s clearly cloudy right now,” Ferentz said Tuesday. “That’s kind of our forecast, our weather forecast.”

I thought it was reported that Lainez and Sullivan were out for the remainder of the year.

on his left hand i believe
so maybe he can function reasonably well
Yeah, I would like to see some Marco short yard option run with Kaleb. Marco is big, strong and pretty fast and a very hard short yardage play to stop is to fake it to the running back and most all defenders HAVE have to try and make that tackle and then the QB keeps it up whatever crease or hole is available. We see it all the time

Meanwhile, Spencer Petras is the 31st ranked QB in the country for completion at .653, a QB rating of 136.65, 2288yds.
The MWC is a definite step down from the B1G, but let the kid have a successful swan song. His only future in football lies in coaching, should he be interested.
3-7 on the season, he is putting up some numbers because the defense is absolute trash in the MWC.

Robert Morris: FCS program, no ranking. 1TD, 2INT 145 yrds
Temple: 103rd
Boise: 72rd
UNLV: 73rd
New Mexico: 131st
Wyoming: 115th
Wazzu: 117th
Hawaii: 69th

If Stratton really is the only QB completely healthy, why wouldn't we move Resar back to QB after the UCLA game with two weeks to get back up to speed as a backup? It's not like he's getting time on the field at WR.

Against really shitty competition. You left that part out. I fixed it for you.
They don’t care about that anymore. If they did, they’d use something like the Congrove Computer Rankings. Your competition matters no longer…perception does. Committee = Invitational.

It’s not a true Playoff. Not even close.

I guess we will see, but I don't buy that KF is going to go with a 5th string walk on over the guy he's stuck by for this long.
KF would only play Stratton over the nation's #110-ranked QB if he wants to give Iowa its best chance to win. The 5th-string walk-on as you call him, looked pretty damn good against UCLA. He made a couple of key third-down passes Cade couldn't even dream of making.

Stratton is a talented passer who is mobile and capable of running. Cade is a poor passer, laces or not, can't move in the pocket, and cannot run a lick. Those are the facts. Spin them anyway you want, but they will remain the facts.

not saying petras is all american but how relevant is the step down in competition when his own team is also presumably of a low caliber? i mean we don’t scoff at 5-star qb recruits with solid stats out of HS coz they are in HS…

Good idea, but it depends on how well his thumb has healed post-op. Marco would need to be able to grip the ball well with both hands for it to be most effective. If he can't, then all running plays would have to go to his left so he could control the ball with his right hand. Taking snaps could also be an issue for him.

I saw on line somewhere he is invited to the Hula Bowl. FWIW.

Ill make sure to get you a "jump to conclusions" map for Christmas.

I didn't say one negative thing about Stratton, just that if Cade can go I believe Kirk will go with him based on the coaches history with the guy he starts the season with.

Have a nice day.
