Jackson Stratton would likely be QB1 if Iowa had to play today vs Maryland (confirmed by Kirk on Wed night, Nov 20)

Here's what Logan Jones said about Jackson Stratton earlier today:

“He stepped in, did a great job (at UCLA), led us to a touchdown drive. He does his job. The way he carries himself, he wants to improve and get better every single day. He’s embraced every single thing about being a Hawkeye. It’s cool to see, when guys come into this program to see what they’re going to be about and who they are. We bring good guys in, and he’s been a great guy.

He’s continued to work so hard. He’s doing a great job for us.”

I know adrenaline takes over and Sullivan wanted to get every yard that he could. However, given our current situation at QB, shouldn't there have been an emphasis from the coaching staff to slide or actively avoid contact? Sullivan was getting absolutely smoked over and over again in the UCLA game. I guess I just don't get it? Tell him to get some yards and then step out of bounds or slide.
So why are you so sure that he wasn't told to do that? If you recall in an interview he was asked about that prior to the UCLA game. He said he would take what was there on 1st and 2nd down and do what he had to on 3rd and 4th. Sounds like he was coached, he just reverted to his instincts during the game.

Doesn't Lester radio down play changes to the QB's headset and then the QB changes the play?

IT USED TO BE that the QB was in charge of reading the defense & changing the play

Now, I don't know....
I think thats in the huddle and pre huddle. You can see the QB sometimes covering the ear holes in the helmet before they go into the huddle. I believe thats when Lester is communicating. I doubt he's talking to them at the LOS. To much going on, crowd noise etc. to have him in the QB's ear at that point.

I just wonder if Sully was bad in practice like he was bad at UCLA
There has to be some of that. Not so much talent potential, but decision making. If there were't issue with some of that , then you have to wonder why he was 2nd or even 3rd string (by some accounts ) at NW after their spring practice. You also have to remember he didn't actually get to start practicing with the Hawks until fall camp and then coming into a totally new system.

I am very impressed with Lester in taking the QBs he has and having them ready.

Stratton has gotten all of the QB1 reps until recently (the assumption is Cade got some when he was cleared). It's gonna be interesting to see how we do on the road coming off a bye week.
