Prohm began his coaching career in 1998-99 as a volunteer assistant to Billy Kennedy at Centenary College, where he initially lived in the basement of a dorm and lived off cafeteria meals. He followed Kennedy to Southeastern Louisiana University, where he spent five seasons as an assistant before leaving for Tulane. In 2006, he rejoined Kennedy's coaching staff, this time at Murray State University. Prohm played a key role in Murray State's resurgence under Kennedy, which culminated with a school-record 31 wins in 2009-10 and an upset of Vanderbilt in the 2010 NCAA Tournament—only the second NCAA Tournament win in school history.

Prohm was named Murray State's 15th head coach on May 23, 2011, after Kennedy left for Texas A&M. In his first season, he led the Racers to their third straight Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title, a school record-tying 31 wins (including a school-best 23-0 start), a top-10 national ranking and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

I am truly shocked they went outside for the hire. Prohm seems like a good coach and all but I feel like they are losing a lot of what Fred was able to build by not just promoting TJ.

Younger guy only 40. Read he likes to run play up tempo. Has a player Cameron Payne potential lottery pick in this years draft.

Guess we won't really know how good he is until 2-3 years from now. But must be nice to step into a new job with the roster they have next season but has his work cut out for year after and start getting recruits in. I wonder if he will try and keep their assistance up for the job Otz. Guy they say can recruit but also tougher to stay when passed up for the job unlike the transition from last coaches.

Absolutely a no-brainer for Prohm. He's stepping in to a situation where the shelves are absolutely stacked with players. All he really has to do is manage the guys already on the team and try to not screw up the system. His situation really reminds me of what Tom Davis stepped into when Raveling left for greener pastures. He should have plenty of success early on and, if things go south, he could probably parlay early success into another head coaching gig at a decent or better school.

Not really like the Davis situation. More like the situation Tim Floyd inherited when he replaced Johnny Orr.

The Cyclones are loaded for this season, absolutely. I'm seeing them ranked as high as #5 in the pre-season polls. But they'll probably be starting 4 seniors and a junior who is likely to go to the NBA a year early. On the bench and in the pipeline, things don't look so bright. Fred's employment situation has played hob with recruiting and appears to have cost ISU at least one commitment, a JC forward who was expected to start this fall.
