Sippy Gov Phil Bryant declares Confederate History Month

Come on bud...you think the gamers and golfers give 2 shakes about black slavery?
I think corporate boards get excited easily. If some protest movement takes off the state could lose millions all for a symbolic feel good F you to the opposition. It's a stupid move by the team that wants us to believe they are business savvy and pro small government. It's not like they needed to lock down the rebel flag voting block.

Nobody...and I mean nobody is going to bother protesting anything in Mississippi...Jessie and Al wouldn't dare set foot down there.

If they are going to be honest about the Conferacy, I actually have no problem with it. Unfortunately, I'm betting it falls into that alternative history realm, like those books that show the world as if the Nazis won WWII.

Agreed. I'm guessing the role that slavery played in admitting new states to the Union up until the Civil War won't even be a footnote.

I think many of you miss the point. The Confederacy cared nothing about overthrow...they did not want the whole pie...just their piece.

They wanted to not only continue an immoral and inhumane institution, they also wanted to see it expanded. For what? Free labor? Racial superiority? The confederacy got exactly what it deserved.

Uh, well... yeah... the entire economic model at the time was built on slavery. It would be like outlawing fossil fuels today.

No, it's not the same as fossil fuels. Fossil fuel use isn't limiting human rights. They put the almighty dollar ahead of those basic human rights. A better comparison would be the companies today using the labor laws in many 3rd world countries to their economic benefit.

I was speaking about the economic impact. Try to keep up. If the Federal government outlawed coal tomorrow, you would be crippling the economies of coal-producing states. Armed insurrection would not be out of the realm of possibility in the face of such an action.

This is tragic from an emotional/human interest point of view, but it's true. Humans are solely responsible for being inhumane. What is a common denominator in their ability to be inhumane without hesitation? Greed and revenge. You bring in those two variables and humans become inhuman (by the measure of what most would agree is humane) in a hurry.

Conditions dictate behaviors and acceptance or intolerance. No one here who is crying about global warming is walking or riding their bike everywhere. I do. I walk and ride my bike almost 99% of the time. But, I'm not crying about the planet and looking for government policy to force others to follow my lead. If it happens, I'll be ready, I guess. I just do what I think is right because I feel it's the right thing to do. And, I stay in very good shape! If others agree, fine. But,t he dependency on fossil fuels is immeasurable. Fossil fuels are not human beings, but that isn't the point. It's still harmful to us as a society. As detached from human insight as it sounds, that is exactly how African Slavery was viewed in the 18th and 19th centuries before the Civil War. They knew it was harmful but the WHOLE COUNTRY needed it to survive the way it knew how. Eventually, it figured it out. It's a shame 600,000 men had to die and x-times that were wounded, and the entire population was shaken to it's core and the after effects are still felt.

History is written by the victors.

I loved Natch's comment about closing the state to conventions, but Jake's right, the golfers and casino patrons do not care.

Mississippi is a complex state. On the surface it has changed. But in the backwoods and delta, it has not. And though we think of slavery and the Civil War as ancient history, it is not. I'm in my 60's and my father who was born in 1918 would have known Civil War Veterans. Mississippi has a few more generations to go before they get to where they want to be. The North is not much different, we just hide our racism better. (Except when our local basketball team plays Perry.)

I hate racism with every fiber of my body, but I've also spent a great deal of time attempting to understand it. I have no problem with the Confederate month. If we don't have history to teach us how do we progress?

Mississippi:

These are highlights from the Neshoba County Fair. Philadelphia is the Neshoba County seat and it's where in 1964 3 Civil Rights workers were murdered and buried in an earthen damn. ( The movie Mississippi Burning). Anyway, note the number of black people you see in this clip.

Whats with the lawn chair race?

It's the famed "Neshoba County Fair Chair Races". After the daily horse races, people line up with their chairs to get a good spot for the evening entertainment. If you Google the chair races you'll see other videos. I guess 60 yr old women knock people down.

Also, just google the fair and look at the images. They have 700 houses out there that are basically only used during the 8 days of the fair. It is something!!!

Isn't this a bit simplistic?

Why do we remember the Alamo?

Why do we "never forget" 9/11?
Yes, why do we. Is it not because we thought we were wronged and want to avenge that wrong doing? See the problem with honoring the voluntary war to protect slavery yet?

Wow, they are getting a lot of mileage out of a "country" that lasted for five years.
