When Sam Brooks was kicking ass, he was wrestling free, going to upper body stuff etc. Then he got beat by Boyd @OSU and it was like he climbed in a whole and fans wanted him to simmer down. Notice today when Sam looked his best? Its when he was pushing the pace with Dudley and going upper body. Look, nobody wants to get decked and look stupid on national TV and it opens all other kinds of stuff. I think the coaches need to let Sammy be Sammy.

Looks like Brooks has been reading my stuff ;)

I was watching the action this morning and came up with the great idea that we could maybe hire Sammy to dress up as a pony and let the little tikes ride him around the yard a bit. He appears to have a good sense of humor as well, so I called my wife into the room and explained my plan while Sammy wrestled his last match this morning.

Me: Hey, this guy wrestles for the Hawks, has a good sense of humor and might be the right guy to hire to dress up in a pony suit and give the little ones rides at the birthday party.

My wife came in and watched the match for a bit before answering.

She: I don't know…. He's a big guy and if he rolls over on his back like that at the party someone might get hurt!

So I got nothing now…..

Yes, the coaches need to let their wrestlers be themselves. It appears everyone tries to get into this mold of Iowa style, and there is no such thing anymore. All wrestlers are in top condition by this time of the year, heavy on the head doesn't work any more, and wrestlers are getting extremely fundamental and slick. It is now about being an athlete and just going for it. We get a lot of wrestlers who come into the program as butt kickers who, by the time they graduate, seem scared to shoot and take risks. All the top coaches have been talking about fun and getting kids to enjoy the ride. I don't know if they get that when we try to "outwork" every opponent and grind.
