Slightly embarrassed

To think that your cheering or chanting has any impact on the game is very naive.

Wow. One of the most ignorant posts I've seen in a long time. Crowd noise can and does have an impact. It can rattle an offense and disrupt them. You see it in football and basketball all the time.

I've read a ton of comments from other teams' fans saying how cool it was hearing us do the I-O-W-A chant that long and that loud......

Embarrassing indeed.

Not to mention that it was initiated and repeated each time around by the STUDENT SECTION! Remember them? Remember all of the empty seats in the Southwest corner the last few years? Remember when other fans were complaining that the students never show up anymore?

Well it's great that they're back and cheering on the team again, that's what the OP and others whining about the I-O-W-A chant are missing. It's great that our fan base is smiling & cheering & enjoying Iowa football again...and at least they were making noise. To call fans who were following the chant (which was 95% of the crowd BTW) "ignorant" is....there are no words for it. EVERYONE was cheering on the team at the top of their lungs. Whether the game was over or not, the defense needs to make a stop....the version of the scream isn't going to suddenly make them play harder. It was loud!

As 3BoysMom posted, the coaches loved it.

I liked the chant, but I understand where the OP is coming from...it was like the crowd was football ignorant and more interested in chanting than watching what was unfolding on the field. The game was NOT over after Daniels broke his long TD run.

I don't think the OP is whining. He made a legitimate point.

Stupidity at its finest.

No I think your first post cleary showed what stupidity is. Crying like a little girl cause the crowd is doing a chant and whining about our D. So the defense had bad game but we still won and yet you still whine and over react and call it embarrassing. That my friend is stupidity at its finest.

Nope, your post is still a shining example of laughable stupidity. So having a legitimate complaint that our defense played dreadfully is equal to "crying like a little girl"? Get real. Go back to the game thread and read everyone else's responses and you'll plainly see the same reactions. Our defense was mad-handled by a weak Gophers team. And seeing that happen n ot only when we're number 5, but also when we've handled way better offenses in the past e.g Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin.

That, is in fact, embarrassing. If you're a real fan you call out the terrible performances and say "this is what we need to improve on, or we're in big trouble". But please, continue proving my point about your stupidity. I'm actually getting quite the laugh from it.

Sooo, I guess there is not really much to bitch about if we are complaining that the crowd was loud but not the "intelligent" type of loud that you wanted...
Don't get me wrong, I am a pessimist at heart and I was (kind of) thinking the same thing as you as the rodents methodically marched down the field but 1) a lot of people obviously take pride in the long and very loud Iowa chant. 2) we were all waiting for the big stop to happen, surely the D would bend but not break 3) I might call out fans for not being loud but not for being carried away at that time in the game.... Just curious were any of the ppl calling out the chant actually at the game?
On a side note Minny is to be commended, what they were able to do to us with a patchwork Oline was a bit humbling

It felt like a foreign soccer match, with the crowd creating their own energy independent of what is actually happening on the field.

For me personally, I was sick and tired of watching our defense suck all night long, so I was a lot more entertained by the cheering.

I didn't find it embarrassing but watching the game on tv the continued celebration while Minnesota marched down the field to put themselves within a touchdown of winning looked out of place at that point in the game. We really needed to keep them out of the end zone on that last drive and we would have had a real nail biter if Minnesota could have executed the onside kick the way their offense had our defense on its heels.

Re-read that again and see if you get how stupid it sounds.

The crowd can't keep Minnesota from doing anything, only the players on the field can. And they failed. Repeatedly.

Maybe they didn't want to watch anymore? I know I didn't.

Yet another fan who fails to realize the impact of crowd noise on an offense. Geesh guy, this isn't a new concept. The fact that the crowd noise didn't appear to impact Minnesota up to that point says more about their player's ability to handle the noise very well, than it does about the overall impact of crowd noise in general. Regardless, it doesn't mean you give up on the crowd noise. Keep it strong and steady prior to the snap. Eventually, it's likely that it will impact the offense on occasion throughout the game.

To those still failing to understand the impact, why do most teams perform better at home? Sure, one can point to the comfortable environment, but most fans know that it's the disruption caused by the crowd. It's intimidating to a lot of players.

Then how do you explain our defense sucking on every other series of the game? If we were pitching a shutout, and that was the only TD that was allowed, you might have a point. But we were being carved up for the entire game.

Failing to grasp that makes you kind of look like a retard.

You have a learning disability. It's as if you didn't even read the post.

You're wrong. End of thread.

It would be great if you could enlighten us with an "Iowa Fan's Guide As To How To Cheer at Kinnick." Just put up a link to a Google document. Those of us who will be at the game on Saturday will have an opportunity to read it and truly be enlightened as to when to yell versus when to spell versus when to scream versus when to sing.

I'm truly lamenting the fact that my undergraduate degree, graduate degree and almost 30 years of attending Iowa football games since I was a Freshman haven't taught me such basics . . . did the university of "Principles of Football Cheering" from 1986-1990? If so, I must have missed that in the curriculum guide.

I guess I now understand why Jewell committed that personal foul during Minnesota's final drive. He was "spellbound" and distracted by the I-O-W-A chant. If only the fans were screaming and yelling nothing in particular . . . I'm sure that he would have recorded a key sack. Damn.

Why am I picturing NorthernHawkeye in the stands on Saturday screaming at fellow Hawkeye fans "Stop it. Stop it, you idiots! This game isn't over. What the f--k are you doing? You are blowing this game and handing it to Minnesota!!!! Stay focused, people. Stay focused!"

To Kirk . . . so sorry. We'll do better next time. We promise.

Look at you. Throwing out your "graduate degree" on message board.

We are in awe of your greatness.

LOL at you!

Writes the genius calling fellow Iowa fans idiots for their cheering efforts on Saturday. If only we could be as enlightened ....

My, this has turned into quite the heated discussion. I'm sure glad this is all we have to fight over! A nice change from seasons past.

Can we just acknowledge that crowd noise does influence games but that maybe it's OK for us in the crowd to enjoy ourselves and do the I-O-W-A cheer for an extended time? Really, I don't feel responsible for the D giving up a TD in 40 seconds because I didn't coordinate with everyone else and make it louder.

BTW, I think most of us did realize what was happening but we weren't going to worry unless Minnesota recovered the onside kick. No need to call anyone an idiot.

Then we would have cheered really loudly, and they would have driven right down the field and scored again anyway.

We will never know because you amateur fans decided to go into celebration mode instead of creating disruptive crowd noise. You might as well have thrown the ice bucket over KF's head (Kentucky vs LSU years ago).

You looked like fools.

Hostile: Never, ever give up. That applies to intimidating crowd noise. Just because they were not bothered by it in previous drives , doesn't mean you cut and run like a coward. You don't even need a graduate degree to figure that one out. But apparently Aurora Hawk does.

Your whining and complaining is a tired act and makes you look like a piss-poor Hawkeye fan who does not know how to act when your team is winning. You're criticizing fans who actually attended a game for the way they cheered. Criticize the defense, not the fans. You're the antithesis of what a good fan is. You don't have a reason why this chant was so wrong when the make loud noises cheers had done nothing all game. It's despicable to call yourself a fan to only tear down those who spent their money to go to a game, have fun, and cheer on the Hawks in any manner they felt fit. Nobody is saying noise doesn't affect the game but they are saying criticizing how they make noise is a complete non and ridiculous issue, especially when loud noises didn't work the rest of the game.

The only thing I find embarrassing is this thread. I don't visit other boards. Are there other fan bases out there that even remotely resemble the knuckledragging neanderthals on here? The need some people feel to be right all of the time perplexes me. 10-0. That is the only one true fact in this entire thread. Everything else is opinion.

Reading must not be your strong point. I said it's embarrassing after a big win when team goes 10-0 and all some fans do is whine and complain not matter what, point and case the OP and your post. Yes the D played bad and in a thread on a chant you have to interject and make some over reaction post comparing the defense to a ymca team and call it embarrassing. Was it bad, yes. Embarrassing no. 12 games certain units going to have off nights in some games point and case Wisconsin. But please cry some more about their performance couple days after the fact.

Team is 10-0 enjoy the ride.

We will never know because you amateur fans decided to go into celebration mode . . .

What exactly does it take to advance from "amateur" fan status to "professional" fan status?

Seriously . . . if you could enlighten us with your expertise on the who, what, when, where, why and how of football game attendance and cheer procedure, I'm sure that all of us dolts would appreciate your thoughtfulness in sharing your wisdom. Not to mention that we can expect to see massively superior play on the football field by the team wearing black-and-gold.

Also, you might want to send an e-mail offering your services to the U of Iowa Athletic Department. "Game Day Behavior" could become part of Student Orientation. Even better, make it a GER. That way you could (1) become an adjunct professor and get paid for your expertise and (2) every single U of Iowa student could become enlightened. Or, see if the Athletic Department would give you donation credit if you made an instructional video that could be posted on-line and be mandatory viewing before anyone can order season tickets. Damn . . . the possiblities are endless!!!
