So long, Fran

As of 2022-23, before the Pac 12 expansion, Iowa coaching staff was 11th ($4.9 million for the staff) above only Minnesota. Nebraska and Northwestern not reported. Purdue was 10th. Not sure why Nebraska wasn’t reported but Hoiberg makes more than Fran by almost a million alone.

Of the new Pac 12 teams only Washington was lower than Iowa at $4.8 million. USC not reporting.

It is pretty tight range of salaries after you go beyond the Top 3 I'd rather have Matt Painter type results and pay the extra $350K.

In 2023 Fran made $3.208 million and if he had made a run in the tournament he would have got more bonus money. That is competitive with his peers, and we don't know about bonus structures/guaranteed money differences. Hoiberg got pay raises recently because he's had success.

As of 2023, coaching salaryes ranged $1.95 million to $6.2 million. Some of the highest-paid coaches included:

  • Tom Izzo, Michigan State: $6.2 million
  • Brad Underwood, Illinois: $4.6 million
  • Kevin Willard, Maryland: $3.9 million
  • Matt Painter, Purdue: $3.55 million
  • Greg Gard, Wisconsin: $3.55 million
  • Chris Holtmann, Ohio State: $3.5 million
  • Mike Rhoades, Penn State: $3.4 million
  • Steve Pikiell, Rutgers: $3.25 million
  • Ben Johnson, Minnesota: $1.95 million

Doubt anything happens before the end of the season, but it's time. Fran just stands there and barely looks like he cares most of the game.

With his youngest son graduating this year, there is no more need to stay in IC. Fran should make the move on his own terms but Beth might have to force it. Move on Fran, go join the rest of your family at Butler and go from there.

Fran (3rd longest tenured) was above only Ben Johnson, but competitive at least with many other. Checks out.

THANKS GARY BARTA!!!
100% what he did the the U of I Athletic dept should be considered malpractice. Seriously.

Massive buyouts and extensions basically cement them as lifetime coaches. The last time we fired a head coach in mens athletics was over a decade ago. Fran is only still here imo because of his buyout.

Diebler,Johnson, Collins.

Guys like Fran that are being evaluated by their AD as to whether they will be retained and haven't got their contract extended don't get pay raises, Yes Fran was being paid competively when his contract was last extended. He's was Within 350$K of Painter....wouldn't you agree Iowa would be quit willing to pay Fran another $350K/yr for Painter's results? It is probably in the Bonus plan that a Final-4 or regular season Champsionship would mean more money for Fran or at least get Fran's contract extended with a pay raise.

He will be gone at the end of the season …
Either on his own accord, forced out, or a mutually agreed upon package to just go away. Long overdue. I’m sure Margaret is spending a lot of time where Jack is in a program for bball and school so they’ve got one plus foot out the door already. Then when Jack heads to Butler at some point this summer, Fran will head to Indy.

Thanks for what you did to dig Iowa out of the garbage heep it was in but 15 years is just too long. GDY Gary Barta. I’d knock his teeth straight if I ever saw him on the streets of IC.

I agree Barta was an idiot, and the buyout is a problem with getting rid of McCaffery. But what I have always wondered is who approved the ridiculous contracts given to Ferentz and McCaffery besides Barta. They (obviously only employees) should also be removed from the university IMO.

I think it’s comical that so many of you are finally coming around to the idea that we have shit for coaches and athletic strategy. It’s been a problem for a decade.
Despite what these coaches and their records show. Overall, the AD is doing pretty well.. however if you cherry pick you can get the numbers to say whatever you want them to say. In fact, the improvement in the performance of UI teams over the past decade has been noticeable.
