So, who will land TJ Power? He Visited IOWA a 2nd Time (Unofficially) in June

Good catch. Crap, I skimmed over the visits paragraph. This is the first time I have seen someone write that TJ visited Iowa for a 2nd time. I am assuming that this apparent June 10 visit was not discussed in the Lounge, either?
I don't believe that visit happened and it could not have been an official as he already took one that school year.

I was not aware of it either, but assuming the article is accurate he visited again on June 10th.....we would be the only school that received a 2nd official....which is another factor that would seem to indicate we are under serious consideration.

Yeah, now it is looking like it was a typo, where that June 10 visit was actually to Boston College.

What Jamie Shaw wrote:

Power took all five of his early official visits, first to Iowa (October 9). Then he visited Virginia (June 6), Iowa (June 10), North Carolina (July 25), and Duke (July 26).

My understanding (don't claim expertise) is that might be generally true in the overall rating....but not necessarily as related to a specific program or field of study. I don't know what area he is specifically looking at, but maybe someone does?
Hopefully, creative writing.

i was going to say he could get a unc degree without even having to bother with classwork. best of everything at unc! fu king cheaters.
Lol. And still those three schools -- Duke, UNC, and UVA -- are rated significantly ahead of every Big ten university not named northwestern or Michigan in pretty much any survey/ranking you look at. Far ahead of Iowa. Facts be facts. The UNC "scandal" has done zero to tarnish the school's academic reputation.

The "scandal" has tarnished the school's academic reputation on this board. Do you think the Iowa Basketball Forum is an outlier?

Well, bleep. This is a story from yesterday. Jamie Shaw thinks Duke and Virginia are the 2 leaders with UNC #3, Boston College #4 and Iowa coming in last.

As you will read, a decision could come in a couple weeks (by mid September).

Recruitment update on 4-star TJ Power

Jamie Shaw
Aug 31, 2022

July was huge for TJ Power. The 6-foot-7 forward springboarded off a massive 41-point performance for his BABC team in EYBL Kansas City. Power is now the No. 21 player in On3’s 2023 rankings.

Duke, UCLA, Kansas, and North Carolina all offered Power after that July performance. The four-star showed up the following week to Peach Jam with hundreds of coaches and NBA personnel in standing-room-only capacity. Through his seven Peach Jam games, Power averaged 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game. NBA scouts walked out of the building raving about his feel for the game.

Joe Tipton broke Power’s top five schools in early August; Duke, North Carolina, Iowa, Virginia, and Boston College.

Power’s recruitment

Power took all five of his early official visits, first to Iowa (October 9). Then he visited Virginia (June 6), Iowa (June 10), North Carolina (July 25), and Duke (July 26).

He does not have any senior year official visits and has said that a tentative time frame for commitment is mid-September

In Power’s words

“I’m looking at the academics,” Power told On3. “And then basketball-wise, a place where I can be versatile and be free. I want to have the ability to utilize my size, to get to my spots, and things like that.

“So places that play with a lot of freedom and confidence, then having a good relationship with the coach. I think that is what builds confidence. So I would say the big things for me are academics, play style, and relationship with the coach. And then I would throw in player development. That is big for me as well.”

Thoughts and intel

This one has been a tricky one to read because TJ Power’s recruitment took a huge jump, and then things went quiet. Prior to the July blow-up, it was safe to call Virginia the leader.

However, Duke and North Carolina put a wrench in the Cavalier’s plans. Power visited both programs within two weeks of the offer. He has family in the Raleigh-Durham area, family who attended North Carolina, and he visited each school on back-to-back days.

Power has been very candid he grew up a fan of Duke and Virginia. The core values and Tony Bennett and the Virginia player development at his position are big for Power. Power described receiving the Duke offer as a “surreal moment.”

The four-star sees the positional fit at Duke, and he spoke highly of the culture of the program.

North Carolina, I think, is in the mix but maybe a bit behind the leader as of pressing publish. Brady Manek’s tournament run opened his eyes, and the history of the Tar Heel program, in his words, is as good as any in the country.

Right now, this one feels like Duke and Virginia are slightly ahead of North Carolina; however, this one is not over. The longer things plays out, the further away he gets from the Virginia visit. North Carolina is sitting right there.

Power’s family went to Boston College, and they are the local program. Iowa was his first offer and visit. Those two, I believe, are four and five on this list.

He has mentioned a mid-September commitment date. He has not set up any more visits. We will see if the commitment date holds true.

Power’s scouting report

TJ Power has a toughness about him. At 6-foot-8, that is one of the first things you notice in his game. As the game progresses, you see the full skill set. He is an excellent passer, able to initiate off the rebound or line up across multiple areas on the floor and make plays. The footspeed will be a question, but he understands angles and help-defense. We would like to see Power more aggressively look to score at times, but his ability to fill a stat sheet makes everyone on the floor better. Power is also a baseball pitching prospect.

Yeah, but don't throw in the towel yet. It is still so close I don't believe I have seen ANY Crystal Balls posted on 247. Doesn't seem anyone is willing to risk their accuracy percentages yet.

I don't know where TJ is going to go but either does anyone else. He is not talking to reporters or anyone else. He prefers to keep his feelings private. Anyone claiming to know which school leads is making it up. We have as good of a chance as anyone.

I don't care if recruits visit once or a dozen times. I just want to see McCaffery's hard work pay off a bit more often after he pursues some of these guys for literally years. Being in the final two is finishing last in the recruiting world.

Good to hear about your daughter…. I have regular experience reading/looking at writing assignments by HS kids….. and good writing skills are not the norm but so important in many professions.
I look at a lot from college graduates and it is pretty obvious it is not an emphasized skill.

not to go off topic, but the good old days of writing letters is long gone. now communication is by a text. the only way my mom can get anyone (kids, grandkids) to respond to her is by text.

I still hand write lots of Thank You notes and Congratulations notes. I have been surprised how many times I see those pinned up on the offices of those I have sent them to. I believe they are even more impactful now because so few people do them. The "Attitude of Gratitude" goes a long ways and hasn't gotten out of style even with the cancel culture running rampant.

remember when we used to all know what the cost of a stamp was? i would now have to google it to find the answer

Things just got more interesting.

Jamie Shaw, the National Recruiting Analyst & author of that article, confirmed that a 2nd visit by TJ Power to Iowa did indeed happen.

* Official Visit was in Oct, 2021 (Penn State football game).

* Unofficial Visit was in June, 2022 (he paid his own way).

He visited 2 teams he followed as a kid around us and the Duke offer left him speechless or something. I hope to hell we land the kid but I think the tea leaves say something else

Yeah, unfortunately the blue blood offers came after the June Iowa visit.

The timeline of the offers really stands out.

Almost 2 years pass....

May 4, 2022: Virginia offered

July 10, 2022: Kansas offered

July 12, 2022: North Carolina offered

July 12, 2022: UCLA offered

July 14, 2022: Duke offered

It shows that Fran has an eye for talent before most others but finishing 2nd is still a disappointment, if we finish 2nd

And for two more years, McCaffery and staff spend a ton of time establishing a relationship with the young man only to be told at the end, he loves Fran, but has decided to take his talents to one of the latecomers. Classic Iowa recruiting story. I hope TJ proves to be the exception, but the situation is starting to feel very familiar.

The reason it feels familiar is because he usually is in on these guys so early, then they blowup. He definitely can evaluate talent.

Tennessee wasn’t one of the newcomers…on reflection you were speaking about Power not Estrella

Can't tell if this is a serious question ....because to think that you are the voice of this board is absurd. But if that is indeed the opinion of the board, then yes, it's obviously an outlier compared to the objective rankings.

No one from Rivals has predicted which school TJ will choose. Yesterday (Sep 3), however, on another recruiting site, 2 predicted he was heading to Duke.

If true, this would be Duke's 2023 Class:

We need to bring Craig "Noodles" Neal back just to be the bag man. The dude paid Tyler Smith $30,000 cash to come to Iowa.
