For me, the best part of living is Iowa is living with my wife and daughter in a safe and pretty decent home, and having my son 1.5 hours away at Iowa. All signs are that my daughter will attend Iowa as well. As soon as they are both out of college, if neither of them remain in the state, we probably won’t either. But, if one of them stays, so will we.

The OP talks about income comparing it to "socialist" Minnesota. I've shared on here I was very heavily recruited to take over a role around Minnetonka last year. We have relatives that live in Ham Lake. When you compare that on average their gas is a dollar more expensive and cost per square foot, they have to pay a higher wage in MN than here to maintain the quality of life. My gross was going to be about 25k more, but when you account for cost of living it would have been a marginal bump not a 25k bump.
