Some real positives from last night

Somewhere in Wisconsin, former Wisconsin coach
Bo Ryan is crying in his beer about this year's edition
of the Badgers. He was one tough SOB who knew
how to coach and win basketball games.

He’s not crying in his beer, he’s asking himself “was she worth it?”. Guess you’re right! He probably IS crying in his beer.

It was a nice win for sure. Now let's see what happens @ Nebraska Saturday night. Win there, or at least compete and keep it close, and then, maybe, the season won't be a total disaster after all. Last night was good to see.
Iowa played a better game, but we are still the same team we were a couple days ago. Same strengths and weaknesses... the only difference was the players wearing the visitor's uniforms.
Happy Iowa won, but not going to go overboard with excitement for the rest of the season.

Let's see if the Hawks can carry these positives into the game Sat at Nebbie, which is a much more athletic team than the Badgers.

Guess you missed the possessions where Jordan got switched onto Iverson and more than held his own keeping him from getting to the rim. Took some physical abuse and battled. That was good to see.

No one on the Iowa team battled Iverson well in the first half. Not Bohannon, not Moss, not Dailey, not Nunge. Iverson went 6-8 and scored 13 of Wisconsin's 28 points in the first half. The one guy on the Badgers who could go to the basket did so at will in the first half. Second half was much better, basically Iowa backed off Iverson and dared him to shoot over them. Good strategy. Much improved effort by Iowa, but it's fair to say it's okay to be skeptical about how much Iowa improved until the Hawks face a team with more than 1 guy with any footspeed.

You may want to re-watch. Jordan wasn't on him much, but when he was he kept him from getting to the rim and kept him from getting a shot. Nunge got the quick hook because he simply failed to follow the scout on how to defend him.

Would anyone in their right mind think a Freshman Nunge should be guarding Iverson?

We had a freshman Garza guarding 1st team All American Happ?

Had Nunge followed the scout...he may have had more opportunity for pt

I don't think he is crying in his beer about this year's Badger team. However, I do think he is using it to pick women up at the bar as to how good this team would be if he was coaching them.

I don't remember JBo guarding Iverson more than a few sec at a time a long way from the basket. Iverson was mostly abusing Moss, and it was more with power and jumping ability than speed. I think Wagner did a better job of guarding Iverson than the others, and had a lot to do with Iverson going back into his passive mode on offense.

This team is last in almost every defensive category in the B1G so apparently Nunge’s not the only one not following the scouting report. Nunge gave up 2 points of 13 scored by Iverson in the first half so were the others following the scout?

Nunge defended him on one possession and came out on him at the 3 point line (1st error, not following scout), jumped on his left hand (he's right handed, so basically gave him a lane to drive to hoop), and also didn't he foul and provide and an 1 situation.

I can usually agree with you 90% of the time.......but even if you follow the scouting report.. do you think we will hold every player to a minimum? One can know every weakness of every player and said player can still go off or get to their average. Heck not a team out there doesn’t know JoBo’s weaknesses and still he can go off for 29 once in awhile.

Bohannon has finally started penetrating with confidence. I've noticed that he frequently gets ahead of his defender then freezes around the free throw line, or an arc extending around the free throw line. The last few games he's penetrating more aggressively and hitting more floaters, little jumpers from inside the lane, etc.... The .424 from three means he's always going to be pretty tightly guarded and improvement in the penetration game, at least from a basketball perspective.

Its a good sign in a dark season.

The point I’m making here is Nunge is a more talented player than some of the other guys coming off the bench for much more significant minutes. He offers much more game than Pemsl & Wagner but is being asked to play the 3 at nearly 7’ instead of being a stretch four. The wing is usually a tough cover on a very athletic player. Then he’s getting yanked for poor defense on a team that’s the worst in the league defensively. How much sense does that make?

He is one of the top 7 players on this team but is being treated like the 11th. That’s a huge mistake. His role should be backing up Cook for 10-12 minutes a game as a stretch four. The defensive match up would be better for him than the 3 and he can pull his guy out from the basket creating more space for Garza to operate because he’s the only 4 that can shoot an outside shot.

Instead Fran is bent on playing Pemsl & Wagner forcing Nunge into the 3 which should not be his role and then yanking him when it does not go well.
Roster mismanagement 101.

Nunge plays zero defense. Not at four and especially not when guarding away from the basket. He's simply lost on that end of the court. Jack is also a very poor rebounder, he only has 14 more boards than Bohannon. Big AW plays great defense on a team that doesn't play much defense. That's why AW is getting the minutes.

Nunge has the much higher upper end I think but he's got to learn how to play defense and get much stronger. Since Jack is only a freshman its safe to look for much better things in the future.

I like Cordell but that kid needs to really pick it up on the defensive end. He really does not like to come out of the lane on defense or offense for that matter. Obviously he's super productive and efficient on offense and rebounds very well.

This is a weird team, very much less than the sum of its parts.

Stop hammering the negatives! Oh wait, that was directed at me by the spin doctor who made the WI win out to be some defining moment in Fran's career. #athletesdontmatter
