Some suggestions from a fan watching Iowa basketball for 42 yrs

- every gutless media sportswriter who kisses athletic department’s ass to be on their good grace should ask for firing or resignation of Fran, his entire worthless crew, and Barta
- every Hawk fan should do the same
- Tyler Cook, and I try hard not to be harsh on these 18 to 22 year old kids, must stop playing like he’s posing for an NBA audition shot everytime he touches the ball
- how many air balls did Daley have? Reinstate Dolph now, even though he was suspended for a different reason
- don’t ever red shirt players when you have injury prone players like Pemsl
- hire coaches to replace the current ones who know how to make adjustments at the end of the season when other teams have figured us out
- send Moss to a mid major team he’ll be great there
- spend time with Garza. Help him get his confidence back. Help him get his spacing right for 3 points shots we all know he can make
- Iowa did major damage to its recruiting after these last few games and off the court issues. Not to share what we can do about this?

Other suggestions are welcomed.

I have been watching Iowa basketball since about 1978.....so very similar time frame.

This post proves to me that just because we've been watching Iowa Basketball for a long time, does not guarantee that we know what we are talking about.

Fran just put together one of the better seasons in the last few decades and went undefeated in the pre-conference schedule.....has almost the entire team coming back....my suggestion is that we keep him and hope that he can take recruiting up just one more notch. The future looks pretty good right now, let's hope for some good recruiting to see it go to another level.

Can’t believe there is anyone that “liked’ this post. Some points are true but do you really think the staff is not doing them? * spend time with Garza? Wow, bet they never would have thought of that. Some points are just plane stupid “how many air balls did Daley shoot?”( BTW there is no “Daley” on the team) and the answer, the 9th player off the bench shot 2 air balls. Other points are stated as fact that no one has only way of knowing yet. “Iowa did major damage to it’s recruiting after these last few games and off court issues.” Maybe but doubt it. How bout this one “Don’t redshirt players when you have injury prone players like Pemsl” What the hell are you talking about? Even if there was a player needed a redshirt can be pulled if needed. Proof that you just because you watch a team for 42 years does not mean you can give insightful analysis.

He’s real but he’s not spectacular

Do you have any evidence of Iowa cheating? If so, post it. Let us in on your secret.

Is that what you would do?
Throw players or coaches to the fire, after perhaps telling them you wouldn't?
If I did have evidence, why would I wish to do that?

But, no. I don't have any "evidence" of the current Iowa basketball program "cheating" currently. But unless things have drastically changed within the NCAA since the time I was familiar with the goings-on around campus, and other campuses, it still goes on.

Cheating in some way, shape, or form happens everywhere. To think it doesn't is to live in fantasy-land, to live completely removed from the realities of college sports.

Adel? I have no idea where that came from either.

No, I wouldn’t make a statement as fact that I have no proof of. That would be you.

You don’t want to throw the players, coaches, or program to the fire, but have no issues claiming that they are cheaters, because everyone does it. That about sum it up? Does that make sense in your world. I hope that you are trolling for the sake of humanity.

Sounds like the typical forum board today. Bitch and moan and bitch and moan. If you were on the Michigan or Purdue board most of you guys would still be bitching. That's what this board has come to..

are you suggesting that I don’t know what I’m talking about? :) I appreciate that you did it in a kind, polite way because I normally ignore idiots who shoot their moths off like the guy posting right after you.
Perry, this is Fran’s 9th season, we see these end of the season collapses year after year... and by all measures, we had an average season, yes, better than last year, but nevertheless, an average season with unimpressive Tournement performance. I can share stats from other coaches who were shown the door with results far better than Fran’s. Trust me, I’m not a Fran detractor, but he does need to take us to the next level or go back to a weaker league.

And I promise you, I know a thing or two about basketball. :) cheers!

That part in bold, we are 100% in agreement on......I (I think like every true Hawkeye fan) want to see us do better. To be competing for B10 championships and pushing deep into the NCAA tournament.

Where I disagree with you (respectfully) is on the "average season" and "poor showing" in the tournament. Since we are talking about a 40 some year time period I went back and checked to see where this last season would rate:
In the last 45 years we've had 10 seasons (quick count-don't take as official) where we had 23 wins or more...two of those under Fran. That's far above average.....and our tourney run this year, although it ended with a loss in the second round, was not unimpressive.

Worst of all, this next year we could have one of the best teams in a long-long time. They have the potential to do well in the league and make a strong push in the NCAA tournament. All against a VERY strong B10 and a very strong non conference schedule (toughest in a long time).

I would have to go back and look at the "end of the season collapses" to get the actual picture. I agree with you, that it feels that way, but I read somewhere from one of the sports writers that although there have been years like that-it is not the norm...doesn't happen every year.

I can almost guarantee that you know more about basketball than I do....I'm just the average fan...but I can certainly be objective and evaluate information....and 23 wins is an above average year. Now we're going into next year with the most experienced team in a long-long-long time....and we want to fire Fran and staff and blow this thing up? If that was going to happen it should have been done after last year....and although I'm not a Barta supporter it appears that based on this year and what is projected next year, he made the right decision.

Thanks for the quick reply, Perry. I admit, I posted this thread after a tough loss. I think it was after the game in Nebraska when we blew a big lead or losing to Rutgers at home by 20 points!

As I said, I’m not a Fran detractor. See this post with only one reply. :)

Or my post about not thrashtalking Fran’s kids, which I gind absolutely appalling. One of them hasn’t even played a game at Iowa and people are accusing Fran of nepotism. And Conner made those last second passes that resulted in last second scores in three games, which made the season, a 23 win season. I don’t get the gripe there at all.

I think most people thought this was an avg season given the 10 -10 record, which Fran labeled as outstanding, and got blasted for it in the media and on Twitter. If this is what he considers outstanding, then he has far more lower standards for the program than the fans, and that’s concerning to me. Don’t you agree?

I agree with you, the next year’s team should be better, at least I hope so. After 42 years, I’m running out of patience. :)

Let’s agree to disagree on the avg vs great season topic.

Looking forward to reading more of your posts, Perry. Cheers!

Sounds good....I appreciate good discussion and that was good discussion.

I also agree on time running out (for me) as I'm getting older. The end of the Lute era and the beginning of the Tom Davis era showed what Iowa basketball is capable of....and I am stuck in that feeling that we can win at a high level. I also feel the sting of dumping TD and what ensued...I am gun shy after we hired the "National Coach of the Year" and completely went in the toilet....I think Fran can get it done (not convinced) and I agree COMPLETELY that this next 2020 recruiting class has to be really good.....has to, or we won't go to the next level.

10-10 conf is of course average, but it’s also a major step above what was expected this year. Fran has long been prone to hyperbole, so “outstanding “ is probably the wrong word but it was nothing to sneer at in a very strong league this year.

My expectation for next year is an NCAA berth right now. I’ll wait to see what the roster/schedule is for next year to say anything further than that.
