Starting 5/Rotation given CURRENT Roster? Is SCHEDULE Toughest in History? IOWA #16(USA Today)

He should definitely take Connor's minutes, whether daddy will do what's right is debatable.

Also, I'll believe what Fran says about CJ once I actually see it. If he can play good defense (stopping penetration by the opponents PG) while running the offense like a true PG should, then I guess JT could redshirt.

You like that freshmen who shot 55% from the FT line in HS just stepping right in during “crunch time” to take 75% shooter Connor’s minutes huh? What have you seen of Toussaint that tells you he is ready to play?

Iowa will have 13 players on scholarship if everyone returns, Cook, Kriener, Bohannan, Dailey, Moss, Pemsl, Garza, Nunge, Wieskamp, CMac, Fredrick, PMac, & Toussaint

My bad 1 off. 13 w/10 having playing time. PMac/JT/Fredric are the only ones who haven’t seen any PT. God that’s a heavy post line-up, hope we get more guards somehow.

The Joey T mystique really does the kid a disservice. He's a tiny and relatively obscure point guard, not even All City in NYC, whose known quantifiables are pretty unimpressive....like the 55% free throw shooting. That's a lot of missed front ends in crunch time isn't it.

Building him up as an upgrade on the four star recruit that has started every game of his career at point guard or the four star top 100 recruit that backs up the senior four star four year starter is irrational optimism. Anyone expecting Joey T to take many, if any minutes from a health Jobu or C McC is going to be very disappointed when reality collides with expectations.

Hopefully Joey T will become a good point guard over time. Iowa freshmen are rarely prepared to play heavy or crunch time minutes, including highly ranked recruits like Cook, Moss, Bohannon in their freshmen years. The depth chart dictated throwing them into the deep end and they learned on the job. Joey T will have the luxury of learning in practice and junk time.

Also, being quick doesn't do a lot of good if you don't know where you're supposed to quickly arrive. That Dickerson kid was lightning fast but appeared to have no basketball sense whatsoever.

What are the said tough games? I know the game in Chicago vs Cincy but that is it. I am guessing we will get a game next year vs the Big East and a better opponent (maybe not better game!) than Pitt in the Big Ten/ACC.
I believe you're referring to the Gavitt Games. I believe that tourney has a two-year hiatus and we just fulfilled it this season. Did I read somewhere that the tourney runs through 2020 or 2021? Can't remember.

Will we be preseason top 10? Top 15?
Don't know, but we now have an entire team with NCAA tourney experience. Not counting the unknowns such as attrition/redshirts, we have the bulk of our guys back. I'm excited for us, especially if we do well against a tougher schedule. The BIG is already tough, and as Fran stated, the non-con should be the toughest schedule ever.

I’m surprised you didn’t Nunge was going to take Connor’s minutes after you said Vanderloo would take Baer’s minutes.

how many coaches have 30 years where they are making millions each year?
how many coaches make in a decade what top athletes make in a year?

wtf is your point? Connor is a sure thing to be a 2 million/yr pinch hitter in MLB just because he was good HS ball player?

Lots of threads discussing next year & beyond.

The one thing I worry about AFTER NEXT YEAR is losing 5 players in one class (next year). That's a big hit. It would be nice to have more balanced classes. Next year's recruiting class is going to be EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Who do we bring in to replace the 5 guys we are losing?

Regarding next year:

(1) I think we could be preseason top 10. Hopefully that opens recruits' eyes.

(2) The schedule looks good and challenging. Could pay dividends come NCAA Tournament time.

(3) The 13 man Scholarship Roster next season, assuming everyone returns:

3 Freshmen:
6'6" SF Patrick McCaffery (****)

5'10" PG Joe Toussaint (***)

6'4" SG CJ Fredrick (***); in early Nov, 2018, was decided CJ would redshirt the 2018-2019 season

6'5" SG Joe Wieskamp (****)

6'5" SG Connor McCaffery (****; announced on Apr 28, 2017 that he will play baseball in the Spring of 2018 and redshirt in basketball in the fall of 2017; ended up, however, playing in 4 games in Dec 2017 as a true freshman, mostly because of the Christian Williams departure; however, after missing two games due to a sprained ankle, eight contests due to mononucleosis, and 19 games after undergoing a tonsillectomy in December, 2017, he was granted a hardship waiver on March 26, 2018, where he will have 4 years of basketball eligibility remaining; on April 11, 2018, Connor was put on scholarship).

6'9" F Jack Nunge (***); in early Nov, 2018, was decided Jack would redshirt the 2018-2019 season

Schedule’s haven’t even been established yet for 2019-2020..

Some of the schedule is set. Iowa will play Iowa State. They play Cincinnati in Chicago. They're in a Vegas tourney with Texas Tech, San Diego St. and Creighton. They'll likely get a Big East challenge game (maybe a Xavier/Seton Hall/St. John's/Butler type). They'll get an ACC game (maybe Syracuse/Louisville/NC State/Clemson type). The B1G slate next year should be another long slog, depending on their draw.

Bryce was the second recruit for McCaffery at Iowa (Melsahn Basabe, who initially signed with Siena, was Fran's first recruit; Basabe announced he was a Hawkeye on May 1, 2010). Cartwright joined already signed Iowa recruits Devyn Marble, Zach McCabe and Melsahn Basabe on the 2010-2011 roster.

There are only 11 nonconf games and as you point out, 6 are set in stone. Do we know anything about the other 5 possible nonconf opponents? Hopefully NONE are Quadrant 4 type opponents! ;)

bohannon was not highly ranked.

I would love for Iowa to be a top10-15 team. Just don't see it yet.
Finished year 2-6 with four double digit losses. Tennessee comeback has gives fans lots of optimism. Even has me excited to go to Vegas tournament next year. We'll see.
i keep thinking about how Tennessee was the #1 team in the country for what, 4 weeks? and they just missed out on a #1 seed and if we had not been hyper ventilating during the 1st half, we would have beaten them

and then when you consider that our entire starting 5 is back (as of now), maybe we should be preseason #1, baby! :)

The boards will be back to hating Pemsl and Nunge in no time. Begging Fran to cut the rotation to 9 because it’s what worked this year..(kidding but actually)
This board and all the trolls that come on here will hate just because. We could win the B1G and lose five or six games and they will still piss and moan about nothing. Just guys having fun and no life besides the internet...

I think preseason we are looking at a top 10 team. Our 13 man scholarship roster is loaded with talent and experience. Can we stay in the top 10 is the question.

Also, read these 2 tweets. Note that Fran says the schedule will be toughest ever in the history of Iowa basketball. Do you agree?

Love the optimism Fran but don't see how this is a Top 10 roster. I see them kind of what they were this year, a top 32-ish team in the country with a chance to go farther with some breaks. And that's not a knock, it's difficult to be better than that. The top 10 teams will have talent that Iowa just does not.

My biggest concern is how Fran divides up playing time. I really have no opinion on all the arguments about who is better/more deserving of time among Pemsl/Nunge/Kriener/Patrick McC/Toussaint/Connor McC/Frederick, I just want Fran to pick the best 9-10 and they play. If you aren't in the top 9-10, get better and cheer the others on. But the best players need to play.
