Steve Prohm

Iowa is still a better job. Pollard is stingy with contracts unlike Barta who is more willing to provide security and more lucrative bonuses.

Prohm's previous contract restricted him from leaving due to a buyout he would have to pay if he left. Why do that if a coach doesnt want to be there?

Fran was able to avoid it and get security by getting the opposite.

Barta > Pollard

So you get money from them going somewhere else to throw at the next coach? It's SOP.

And most ISU fans are very happy with the news.

I have to believe this only helps Iowa St with recruiting. Oskaloosa star in Foster will likely visit Ames again.

I wonder how good ISU will be without Shayok? That dude was like hitting the transfer lottery. I have a hard time figuring out how ISU keeps hitting that lottery, although I have said before there are some obvious pitfalls to the approach.

I don't know what the latest thoughts are on THT or Wigginton moving on, but if either one goes and the team no longer has its best 1x1 creator in Shayok, I would think the Cyclones take a big step back in 2019/20. Dunno though, they always seem to have some massive transfer come through along with a good freshman or two. I'm jealous of their success with transfers when our coach won't even consider that route for the most part.

And Shayok was really good but is the first transfer that Prohm has really hit on. I would throw Jacobson in there as well I guess. All of his other ones have been terrible.

Yeah, I go back to Hoiberg too - Deandre Kane being another one that (IIRC) ended up being either a 1st team or 2nd team all B12 player. You bring in just ONE guy like that with a relatively talented roster, and great things happen. I mean, just imaging if Fran had somehow found a stud PG to put into the mix this year?

But Prohm isnt Hoiberg and has very little transfer success.

I know its probably a pipe dream but I would love for Fran to pursue Jaylen Fisher from TCU. Immediately eligible and 2 years of eligibility left. He has battled multiple injuries so no guarantee it works out.

Prohm has greatly struggled with grad transfers. That's not really up for debate. His sit out transfers have been good though. We'll see what Nixon is like next year.

I'd be really nervous going after Fisher, it's very unfortunate but the kid cannot stay healthy. I think Iowa should roll with their guys. I think you want continuity and a shared goal heading into next year.

Shayok was a pretty good transfer and a 1st Team B12. Jacobson played out of position on defense, but had some big games.

Those two would argue Prohm will be ok with the transfers. We shall see if Nixon from Colorado St is able to contribute next year.

I get the Prohm extension with chance of him being lured to Bama with more $ and his alma mater. Horton-Tucker ESPN draft guys have around 20. He's a project with upside which over half of 1st rd is anymore but anymore you got to think strike while the iron is hot. If he knows he's most likely to be 1st rd pick which means guaranteed contract tough to pass up. Wigginton seems like most talented and I think would be the biggest loss for them but he's not a pure PG and short for a SG in the league so that would be the stuff hurting his draft stock. Haliburton I just don't see it yet for him. Guy has good size and pure PG but has that funky set shot and not a guy you saw stop and pull up for a jumper. Was either drive into lane for a layup or 3 pt shot.

What sit outs has Prohm had besides Jacobson and Nixon?

I think THT goes if he gets 1st round feedback. Wigginton waited until the deadline to come back last year and I think his plan was always to just come back for one more year.

Haliburton will return.

Really? I would have thought a lot of Clone fans would have been very upset with this year's team getting beat in the first round by the B1G's 8th place team in the NCAA's.

Also, I see, to no one's surprise, that Cam Lard has announced he will not be returning next year.

so if Shayock, Haliburton and Horton-Tucker are good enough to go to the nba plus Wiggington, that really speaks to Proehm’s terrific coaching that he didn’t get them to the final four let alone out of the first round....No wonder they extended his contract.

ISU is always trying to match IOWA...maybe Jamie is trying to outdo Barta.

He’s had a ton of talent while at ISU, made one Sweet 16 beating two double digit seeds but has way underperformed otherwise. Steve’s yet to beat a single digit seed in the NCAA tourney as ISU’s head coach.

This Iowa State alum is really happy about Prohm's extension.

We can debate his success (or lack thereof) with transfers and/or grad transfer all day. Opinions vary. Shayok was a homerun! Jacobson has been solid all year, and I expect a better senior year. Bowie and Holden gave them depth in the post - not spectacular by any means but they both had their moments. We'll see about Nixon.

Lard transfer? Addition by subtraction. I wish him well.

Wigginton and Horton-Tucker? I hope they both stay, but understand if one or both bolt to NBA. Hard to turn down 1st round guaranteed money. If they are 2nd rounders, they are better off staying.

Overall, I am very happy with Prohm. He has a laid back style and allows his players to play. That is a double-edged sword at times. I think players who are the caliber of Lindell and Talen lean toward ISU because they have that freedom. At the same time, I wish they played more of a structured offense vs. the 1 on 1 game. I dont know. Like I always say, all of those coaches have forgotten more about bball than anyone of us will ever know.

Prohm seems like a good guy. I loved how he stood up his guys at Senior Night when some jackass in the crowd heckled him.

Anyway, I'm happy he is in Ames for a while. Any ISU fan would love Fred, but I think we all knew his stay was short term. I can see Prohm staying in Ames for another decade. The people who clamor for a new coach are ridiculous. Who will they realistically get that is better?

Well if not for a wing and a prayer, Duke with 3 of the top 5 NBA draft prospects was fortunate not to be sent home.

No, Iowa needs a few quick PGs no doubt. To roll with what we have would be a mistake.

Most fans are very upset by the loss to OSU. But it's one game.

If THT and Wigginton return, we're looking at being preseason ranked in the top 20 and would likely be a favorite for the Big 12 title next year. If they are both gone it will be a miracle to make the tourney. I honestly think both will be back, but we'll see.

I'm not sure this is great advice. I understand where you're coming from because we're in the same boat with Cook. However, second rounders don't become first rounders by waiting a year...basketball is a much different animal than football. Anyone below a lottery pick is VERY unlikely to become a star NBA player. You've either go the tools or you don't. Most guys in the NBA are bench players or role players. I don't see anything from Wigginton and Horton-Tucker to suggest they'll be great NBA players, same goes for Cook. But you are more valuable in the draft as a 21 year old project who can eat minutes off the bench than a 22 year old project who can eat minutes off the bench.

Had ISU fans try to tell me they were favorites for the B12 title this year in January, how'd that work out? LOL a .500 finish, so close. But hey at least you won the conference tournament, no one cares about NCAA tournament wins anyway.

They only finished 5 games back. Too bad the football team’s game against SDSU was canceled or else they would have won the national title in all sports.

Like the vast majority of Cyclone fans, I'm pleased with Prohm and happy about his contract extension. Do I think he's the next John Wooden? No.

Next year could be good, depending upon who stays and who goes and, of course, the newbies. I'm optimistic about Nixon, not only because of the numbers he put up, but because he played three years for Eustachy.

The loss to tOSU was frustrating, but a number of things went into it, and the team played hard and together, which wasn't the case in the games leading up to the conference tournament. After the West Virginia loss, I thought the wheels had come off for good.

If you think ISU fans don't care about that NCAA tourney loss, I think you haven't been paying attention to the lunacy happening at CF right now.

If those two return, who would you preseason rank ahead of them for next season in the Big 12?

Way too early to tell until the transfer market has settled and spring recruits have inked their paperwork.

But you just had a team with THT, Wigginton, Shayok, NWB, etc. that finished .500 in conference and nowhere close to Top 20.
