Sumter SC deputy Responds To His wife's Fatal Car crash

When Ed Thomas was killed, his wife was on the paramedic crew that responded to the scene.

This is one of the prime reasons I got off the streets as a paramedic after 25 years. I missed responding to my dad's fatal heart attack by about six hours. I missed my grandfather's functional life ending stroke by 15 minutes. Very few things in EMS gave me nightmares, but responding to one of my family members was one of them. I would literally wake up at night in a sweat from a dream that I was doing CPR on my wife.

Pretty awful.
Health care is a tough field. We go to see these people when we're at our worst and forget that they're people too.
A friend of ours just recounted a story of a family member yelling at her telling her she had no idea how they felt and asking "how would you feel if it was YOUR mom going thru this?!" not knowing that she was only taking shifts so she could make money to cover expenses of her 2 year old leukemia treatments.
Cut them some slack folks, never know what's going on.
