Suppose We Let Texas (or Whoever) Secede - Would It Be Like Brexit? Would It Be OK?

Who are the European countries incapable of supporting themselves on their own? That would be Texas.
 
Why is this even a discussion? We're not going anywhere. Now, I wish I could say the same for the rest of the country who seems to be moving here in droves.

For the red states, it would be disastrous. They take more than they put in and except New Mexico, the poorest states are the reddest states.
Why wouldn't the welfare recipients in those Red states head for Bluer skies and sanctuary?

Some of you are woefully ignorant of the resources that Texas has. They are sitting on one of the largest natural gas basins in the world. Which is about 30% of the US reserves. And have more of the oil refineries than any other state. Also ranked #2 is waterborne commerce.

It's GDP would be in the top 10 if were a stand alone country.

And the reason the power grid struggles at times is... wait for it... the GOVERNMENT's fault.
 
Idk without thinking about it a ton, but I have no doubt Texans would rapidly find out they aren’t nearly as self-sufficient as they think.

Brits are finding out now they relied on Europe for a lot more than they thought.
Political independence isn't about economic autarky.
Economic autarky is a canard, and not desirable anyway.

Texas-FL-GA economies measure in with a combined GDP of 5 trillion and a population of 64 million people.
Germany, for comparison, has a population of 83 million people producing 4.26 trillion in value.

The economic center of gravity in the US continues to shift:

The Northeast in 2009 contributed 24.3% to GDP while that collection of southern states offered 21.6%. By 2016, the split was 23.8% versus 22.3%. In 2019, it was 23.4% versus 22.7%. Then the lines crossed, as in 2021 the Northeast represented 22.7% and that collection of southern states was at 23.2%.
 
Since they wrote it into their agreement to join the US, I think they have every right to do it and should be allowed to exit peacefully.

Sure it'd be a bit of a messy divorce, but there's no need for bloodshed over it.

But his budget would have, if it had passed. I know he claimed he would reduce th4e deficit but he wasn't including interest on the national debt - which would have risen to over a $trillion by now even without the pandemic stimulus and such.
 
No worries, Trump will personally pay the Texans social security, after paying his civil lawsuit penalties, his attorneys, his upcoming huge judgement. Oh what’s that? Nothing left? Well he stands with Texas regardless!
