We've been Verizon customers since very early in the cell phone days. Thinking about switching to T-Mobile.

Verizon cell service has been "fine". Their customer service is "poor" IMO. Their "deals" are always confusing.

T-Mobile is less expensive, at least initially. I already ordered their home internet which will save a ton over Mediacom if it does the job. Can save even more if I switch our phones lines to T-Mobile.

Thoughts?

For almost 6 years now I have been on some crazy plan with Sprint/T Mobile.. Was a promotion to get new customers. 15 bucks a month unlimited everything. My bill after taxes is $19.22. Deal is no longer available of course but if they dont F with my plan I will stay with them for a long time. Coverage, service have been great.

T-Mobile used to be non-existent in western Iowa, no coverage. I just checked their coverage map and a maybe a lot has changed.

I have always had Verizon but something has changed and coverage in our neighborhood is has been crap for about a year. Everyone here is having issues with it but Verizon says no changes in the towers have been made. I don't believe them.

If it wasn't such a hassle I wouldn't mind sampling T-Mobile for a month or so to see how it works out.

T-Mobile was iWireless for years in Iowa. It was some weird contract thing. Then iWireless started to phase out, T-Mobile bought Sprint and and T-Mobile appeared in Iowa. So T-Mobile essentially has the Sprint and iWireless towers plus any new infrastructure they put in.

I had both Verizon and T-Mobile for a while. It was Verizon and Sprint initially, and I would have said Verizon all day at that time. I would recommend T-Mobile now, at least in my area.

I use an MVNO on Verizon towers.
Costs <$18/month for 8GB of data. I believe you can get 20GB plans for <$30/month.

T-MOBILE coverage is great now.

Verizon is the best overall. I’ve gone away a couple times but always came back. Won’t be leaving again.

What does one typically need customer service for with these wireless companies? I've been on Google Fi for almost ten years and I think I've interacted with a "customer service" person once.

Fair question. Verizon, in my case, has made things so complicated when it comes to different plans, phone upgrades, billing practices. We have 6 lines on our plan and it seems like there's often something to talk/chat with customer service.
Today I got an email about pre-ordering a Galaxy S24+. I am interested, so I started to fill out the pre-order form - the form didn't even agree with the email text. So, I went to the website and the deal there was different from the email and the form.

So, after years of this, I started looking at T-Mobile.

I'm old. I need a phone with giant numbers

Makes sense, thanks for elaborating. Six lines and the different plans, things will come up. My mobile phone experience is more of a basic commodity service. They provide the connection, I provide the phone, I download the app and activate the service, choose when to upgrade a phone, etc.

I had thought that the big wireless companies had adopted the bring your own phone model as opposed to financing the phone as part of the monthly phone plan, but I'm sure they've got all sorts of legacy plans that have been grandfathered into different treatments.

The only thing that matters is which provider's tower is closest to where you need it the most. If you travel a bunch west of the rockies and east of the sierras, then vzw might be your best bet. But for a regular joe/jane looking for hotdish recipes or tiktok likes, check your location vs coverage.

I have streamed music and video on VZW on road trips from SoDak to Detroit, MSP, West Texas, and across the Rockies to Seattle.

As much as I'm tempted by T-Mobile I've been with Verizon since they acquired, I think, Cellular One, when I started service in 1995. It's been a good run so far.

I switched to T-Mobile about 2 years ago when Verizon screwed me out of $800 for a trade-in phone that got "lost" in the UPS system while being sent to them. Verizon provided the box and label, I had no choice in the shipping company, it was prolly stolen from the local UPS station because it never moved after showing it arrived there... since Verizon was the shipper on record, UPS wouldn't pay me for the phone and since Verizon never received it they wouldn't give me the credit. So, I paid off the new phone in full and switched to T-Mobile. Been very happy with it... the extra benefits you get with their higher plans (Netflix, etc) really bring the cost down and it starts off very cheap to begin with. My coverage has been great. My husband still has Verizon and coverage is nearly identical. I had MUCH better coverage in Mexico than he did.

Edit to add, I did have crappy coverage in Le Mars, IA when visiting the in-laws.

I have Verizon for cell, and TMobile for home internet.

I like the Verizon coverage when I'm traveling, but their customer service in their local store nearest me sucks big time. Another store a little farther away has great service.

T-Mobile is cheaper, especially if I bundle, but I'm staying with Verizon for cell service for now.

I really like the T-Mobile home internet, but I do have a problem with the modem/router if the power flickers for just a second. When that happens, I have to do a manual reset. The underlying problem is Florida Power and Light, which is a different topic.

I've put in a UPS battery backup on my Modem, router and electronics. It gives me surge protection and internet for a while if the power goes out. I got it mostly for those flickers.

Figures. Verizon will give millions to new customers and screw their existing ones.

Got an email soon after I did the OP. Upgrade to a new Galaxy S24+ for $5/mo plus a trade-in (in any condition) without changing your plan, Decided to go for it and did the deal with Verizon via chat. Big mistake.

Got my new phone and they said they would send me a mailer for my trade-in. Never arrived. So I called their "customer service" and they said my trade in had no value so they didn't want it and I would get NO credit for a trade-in, so I was going to pay full price for the new one. I told them about the "deal", and they told me there was no such deal available. What?

Went back to chat. Oh yes, there is a deal, but you have to upgrade your plan, What? Well, the upgrade was only a couple of bucks so decided to continue. They chat agent asked me twice what color I wanted - I said I already have my new phone! I just needed to send in the trade-in. After jacking around with that for a while, it sounded like I was going to have to send my new phone back and start over. I told them to forget it, I would return my new phone and I wanted to go back to my old plan. Oh, you can't go back to your old plan once you upgrade. What?? I remined him I'd only been on the "new" plan for 15 minutes and if he didn't switch me back they were going to lose 6 lines. He switched me back.

It was a painful 3 hours out of my life and I accomplished nothing. I hate Verizon.

In this same period of time I thought I would try the T-Mobile internet for $60/mo The Verizon internet is not available at my address, even though I have a neighbor that has it about 150 yards away.

The T-Mobile internet was going to save me $70/mo vs Mediacom. Received the box, set it up and it worked "fine". Not quite as fast as Mediacom but close enough for $840/yr. Called Mediacom to cancel and they said since I was such a good customer they would lower my cost $55/mo. What? Decided to stay with Mediacom, even though I hate them too.

Returned the T-Mobile internet well within the 15 day free trial period. Two weeks later I got a bill for $60. They took it right out of my checking account as was required for home internet. Called and told them of the mistake and the agent got me a refund - for $58,68. I have no idea why it wasn't $60. So, now I hate T-Mobile.

Hours spent on all this, but at least I'm saving $55/mo. If I would have started by calling Mediacom I could have avoided the whole T-Mobile fiasco.
