Is it ok to walk around the stadium with drinks? Also, now that Magic Bus gone, is there a good place/tailgate to watch the early football games? Any help appreciated.

If you're in a lot, yes. But I'm pretty sure you cannot take an open drink onto the Family Plaza or on any sidewalks.

Depends on what you're drinking. It's very easy to dump some liquor into your coke or into a lidded styrofoam cup and carry that around. Don't be an idiot and no one cares.

I walked around Kinnick all last year with a open beer can (koozied). Walked past plenty of cops who didn't do anything. It was a group tradition to chug a beer before entering the stadium. Maybe we were just lucky but they seemed much more relaxed than years past. Like others said, just be cool and if you get approached just apologize and dump it or throw it away. I also sneak flasks in so the wife and I can have a cocktail while we watch the game.

Thanks. I haven't been to a game @ Kinnick since 2008, I think. Back then we could walk around with beers through the neighborhoods & across Melrose with no hassles at all. I remember drinking beers all the way to the gates of Kinnick but it sounds like we can't do any of that anymore?

This kind of answered all my questions, so if we behave we should be fine walking around and up to the stadium. Thanks for everybody's responses!

We were. We tailgate in Hancher usually so we take a Cambus up to that drop off point. It was usually close to game time so the crowd was all migrating towards the stadium. Maybe we were just lucky but they never hassled us in any way but we also didn't draw any attention to ourselves.

Going off of last year, I think if you are on Melrose that's the only place you got a chance of getting a ticket. Even then I think you have to be acting like a idiot and drawing attention to yourself, for the most part.

If there is one game this year where I would expect the cops to have less tolerance it would be this ISU game:

Night game, warm weather likely, tons of fans that are only there to tailgate...

But that said, if you are respectful and not acting like an idiot, I would think you are fine walking around the lots and even all the way up to the gate with booze.

This if you act normal and aren't being an idiot, you can carry a beer or mixed drink around. The cops are only looking for the idiots. Case in point last year at the PITT game. We all walked around w/beers and there was one guy in our group who had too much to drink. He was carrying a mixed drink, but he was bumping into people and yelling at people. Case in point, he got stopped and charged w/public intox. Idiot.

I was up at Okoboji this summer and we had a full boat of people and the driver was consuming beers, but nothing bad. He was very careful driving the boat slow and making sure we all were safe. About mid day another boat of college students comes flying by us and starts to do circles and is just out of control. Cutting in front of other boats and jet ski's. That driver was smoked and acting like an idiot. About 5 min later the DNR had that boat stopped.

So case in point, act normal and you'll be fine. Cops won't bother you.

When ol Sally started her crack down in 2010 you would get busted if you were on the streets or the plaza. Now as long as you arent acting crazy and sloshy drunk you will be fine. Use a koozie or a solo cup for good measure.

I see people every single game on Melrose right in front of the stadium with beers in hand. Some may get pinched, but most don't. Just be reasonable, and it should work out.

I think this is probably accurate, I'd guess upwards of 10-15 thousand people go to the game with no ticket and no plans to get one, whether the game's in Ames or Iowa City. The night game just provides that much more time to get wasted; then there's the rivalry thing and the fact that a lot of crap can happen after dark. If cops aren't especially vigilant and active, they aren't doing their job.
