Is it ok to walk around the stadium with drinks? Also, now that Magic Bus gone, is there a good place/tailgate to watch the early football games? Any help appreciated.
Thanks. I haven't been to a game @ Kinnick since 2008, I think. Back then we could walk around with beers through the neighborhoods & across Melrose with no hassles at all. I remember drinking beers all the way to the gates of Kinnick but it sounds like we can't do any of that anymore? If you're in a lot, yes. But I'm pretty sure you cannot take an open drink onto the Family Plaza or on any sidewalks.
This kind of answered all my questions, so if we behave we should be fine walking around and up to the stadium. Thanks for everybody's responses!I walked around Kinnick all last year with a open beer can (koozied). Walked past plenty of cops who didn't do anything. It was a group tradition to chug a beer before entering the stadium. Maybe we were just lucky but they seemed much more relaxed than years past. Like others said, just be cool and if you get approached just apologize and dump it or throw it away. I also sneak flasks in so the wife and I can have a cocktail while we watch the game.

I think this is probably accurate, I'd guess upwards of 10-15 thousand people go to the game with no ticket and no plans to get one, whether the game's in Ames or Iowa City. The night game just provides that much more time to get wasted; then there's the rivalry thing and the fact that a lot of crap can happen after dark. If cops aren't especially vigilant and active, they aren't doing their job.If there is one game this year where I would expect the cops to have less tolerance it would be this ISU game:
Night game, warm weather likely, tons of fans that are only there to tailgate...
But that said, if you are respectful and not acting like an idiot, I would think you are fine walking around the lots and even all the way up to the gate with booze.
Better check myself into AA. Nah I'll have some beers tonight though, its Monday! If you cant get enough in you at your tailgate chances are you have a problem.
