Tariffs

Let’s check how many deaths we have after the tariffs are implemented, and see how effective they are.

And that’s before we ponder whether the blame lies with Canada and Mexico, or with the addicts here.
You do realize that a number of fentanyl overdoses are not from addicts

So we should just throw our hands up in the air and not do anything?
It's just ****ing dumb and ineffective. As you will see, there is zero connection between tariffs on legal products and the illegal drug trade. Most of the fentanyl is imported by Americans who are crossing borders legally. Better intelligence and more effective screening of shipping through legal ports of entry is the only way to mitigate this problem to any extent.

I can't believe how stupid our country has become.

I can’t believe how stupid and divided we have become that we argue over this

1. Still is coming across the border, and China is not shipping fentanyl directly to the United States it is shipping the chemicals to make them and the majority is going to the Mexican Cartels
2. No sh:;
3. In 2020 the crisis cost 1.5 trillion dollars what do you think it is today
If you want to go after the fentanyl you go after the money. Even with Bitcoin it still has to be moved by bankers somewhere.

Trump pardoned the Silk Roads guy which lead to drug deaths. You are deluding yourself if you believe Trump's reasoning. He wants the tariffs because he wants tariffs, this is his excuse to try to sell it.

If Trump understands one thing it is marketing. You do not have to mold yourself into his positions. Do you get a rise out of playing a stupid version of devil's advocate?

Or they can just shrug it off. Trump is going to apply tariffs regardless. I have no doubt of that and I’m sure they don’t either.

If I was Mexico I’d stop spilling blood and spending money on it at all. Trump is going to do what he wants anyway.

This. Anyone that believes these tariffs weren’t inevitable I would like to offer my beautiful beachfront property I have in council bluffs Iowa.

Are we going to invade Mexico to go to war with drug cartels?
Can see the US drone bomb them and special ops. My question is the blow back from that though. Destabilize Mexico’s economy and turn the entire country into a war zone. Sending refugees to our border.
Also the cartels do not respect the rules of war. Can see them go after soft targets in the US in retaliation. They’re not a half a world away like Iraq or Afghanistan.

"drug addiction is killing too many americans"

"we should provide programs and resources to help addicts and reduce the occurrence of ODs/deaths"

"no...we should do tarriffs"
So we are not providing programs and resources? Last i checked narcan was more readily available than ever, more education and awareness continues throughout the country

It took the War on Drugs 53 years to attempt tariffs. Lets see how this goes.

All this step will do is weaken our relations with our neighboring nations and make everything more expensive for American's. It will also increase poverty, and increase crimes of despair and diseases of despair such as drug and alcohol abuse.
I was just going to write about the abysmal failure of the war on drugs. But like COVID and war, Trump is just going to wave his magical tariff wand and it will all quickly disappear.

Well yeah. Not everyone who's ever tried a drug is an addict. That would probably infer that 70-80% of the country's adults are drug addicts.
I'm just saying that using illegal drugs has always come with a risk because you can't count on them being pure. The solution would be to legalize them so they could be regulated for quality control.

How would you combat it?

I’ll assume this is a serious question.

If we’re going to fight this conventionally, or the ways that we have done it in the past, you must do it with cooperation from the Mexican authorities. If we don’t have their cooperation, they tide of illicit drugs will likely increase as opposed to decrease, because you’ll reduce the incentive of those opposing governments to actually do something about it.

Trump has been talking about tariffs for a long time and I think he’s using any justification to apply them. It’s one of the few things the president can actually do unilaterally, so he’s going to use them.

As to him throwing the American military inside of a sovereign nation to attack the cartels, there couldn’t be a worse idea. The cartels avoid conflict with Americans and the authorities here as much as they possibly can. If we start attacking the cartels, what’s to stop their agents in the US from you know… car bombs and stuff?

As for what I would do, I assume you’ll vehemently disagree and that’s okay, I would decriminalize all drugs and throw all of the funds we are currently using to prosecute the war on drugs to how to treat addicts and help people struggling. I think we have the entire thing bass ackwards but that’s a pipe dream.

So the majority of you want to continue what we have been doing

Well obviously the Mexican government is not cooperating and this is a way to make them come to the table

The cartels are already murdering people especially in the border states

If I stipulate to legalizing drugs will you stipulate that no EMERGENCY care would be provided to them?
