Taylor moving up to 86 kg

Great move. Taylor's long and should be able fill out at 86k nicely. Herbert looked old and slow at worlds and Ruth's game hasn't translated well at freestyle yet. Taylor v Ruth is very intriguing. I wonder if Howe will bump up as well. That cut has to be murder on him.

Is Ruth still wrestling? I thought I had read somewhere that he wasn't going to make a run at 2016 but that may have just been rumor. Good luck to Taylor although I am guessing he wishes he would've started this transition last year. There is only about 6.5 months between now and the OTT and he will still need to qualify while bulking up.

Agree that he would have been better off starting last year but he may have started bulking up just after this year's OTT which would give him close to a year rather than just the 6.5 months.

Taylor said the cut was a tough one for him. He dwarfs Drake if you look at them next to each other, so he might be closer to 86 than most people think.

Yeah he's already up to 195-200 and now he can lift and fill out his frame instead of trying to shrink it down. Seems like a good idea to me. The biggest take away from the interview was that now he can wrestle with Cael....this is going to be fun to watch

I agree. He could be a beast up a weight. He wont have the size advantage or as much the reach but his technique and ability will separate him quickly. If he can win the spot, I think he can medal if not win. Be a great one two punch for the US.

He does need to lose the magic man t-shirt and knick name. Might as well wear mickey mouse ears at weigh ins. Sooooooooo goofy.

I don't see Taylor being able to beat Sadulaev at all.

I can see why you doubt but we have not seen DT at full stregnh at a more comfortable weight. The extra energy might open up a whole bag of whoop ass.

Like most of you, very happy that DT decided to move up. Times like this, I really wish the Olympics wrestled folkstyle...they could pencil his name in. His style will benefit him on his quickness and low leg attacks vs a more physical guy like Howe who would have a tough time enforcing his will on bigger guys. I think once DT puts on more muscle, he is going to be tough for any American to stop.

Ramos 57K
Dennis 61K
Metcalf 65K
Dake 70K
JB 74K
Taylor 88K
Snyder 97K
Dlagnev 125K

Dream team for me. I don't know Denis can medal but he can win the spot. Dake has not cut hard in years and can beat Green with a hangover. Come on!!! Grothus can do 141, Dake can do 70K!!!!! Get on board with me. Call USA Wrestling!!!!! Get with me guys!!! This can work!!!

196lbs with extra time to recover from weigh-ins equals guys @210lbs plus minimum. These are big boys.

One of Taylor's biggest advantages was his massive size advantage versus his competition--he was much bigger and longer than nearly every guy he wrestled in college. This will no longer be an advantage he can count on. His length advantage will no longer be a game changer. Will he be able to generate the same sort of offense without the freakish size and length advantage?

Whole new ballgame for Taylor versus the big boys. His quickness will be a plus and his ability to string moves together should also be an advantage.

Fwiw, the weight class is 86kg (190 lbs). Still a huge jump from 74kg (163 lbs). Even if he was cutting big before, that's still 20lbs of muscle...and more importantly strength.

Good luck DT!

5 years is a long time for him to get bigger. He definitely has the frame for it. I sure hope he can do it because the cupboard is looking pretty weak at that weight coming up. As a fan of the U.S. I hope he can. Valencia? Mccintosh?

I like this team as well for 2017, but remember there will be no 61k or 70k at the Olympics. We will see a lot of wrestlers going up or down from 61 & 70, so competition will be intense at Iowa City. I think it will be fun to watch. I think you might see someone like IMAR win the NCAA at 157 and qualify for the Olympic Team Trials and make the cut to 143 in 3 weeks between NCAA and the Team trials in Iowa City. This would add even more competition. Not sure IMAR could make that cut and still be effective, but remember, they only have to make the cut for one day.

Great move. Easily our weakest weight here in the U.S. I think we see him make some noise in 2020.
not sure it is "easily" our weakest weight. Ruth has wins over Medalists. Herbert former medalist. Gavin multiple time world team member.

I highly doubt any of them wrestle in 2020 and Gavin's international success has been limited to say the least.

It's definitely the weight with the least amount of depth for 2020 and I'm not sure how that is even debatable.

I can't see IMar making 143 short of cutting off a limb.

I think it will be tough on guys like IMar or Green to cut to 65kg and be effective. While they may only have to make it for 1 day, they would have to keep their weight close for some time, they are already cutting to make 157 and 70 kg, and are pretty ripped. They are probably both walking around at 170lbs or more. That is 11-14 lbs from their current wrestling weights.

From what i understand Green has no trouble at all making weight, and never really has. He wrestled 66 or 65kg i think just a little over a year ago, after his JR season. IMar on the other hand I don't think will be able to make it down, but who knows he has the tenacity and mindset of a competitor and champion so maybe he thinks he can go down and push Metcalf. Novachkov is also at the same weight and he works out with Perry and IMar as his big training partners.

I am not saying he will be effective, but I look for him to show up in Iowa City in April at 65kg(143lbs.), assuming he wins NCAA at 157.
Many wonder how effective Grothus will be at 141, cutting an additional 8lbs over several months and if and when we see IMAR show up at 65kg after 3 or 4 weeks that will cause some head scratches.

Imar wrestled 160 his senior year of high school and tried to make the junior world team a year ago at 163 lbs. and got hammered by Anthony Valencia. He is not dropping to 143 and not because he doesn't have the mindset or the heart of a champion, but because it would be foolish, he's simply too big for the weight. Also not sure if Macintosh could make 185. He put a lot of work becoming a good-sized 197 lber. He's wrestled freestyle at 96 kg (211) and done OK. He was a 189lber in High School and that was a while ago, he may be too big now.

Ramos had a pic on twitter the other day. Taylor was in it and I didn't recognize him right away because he looked huge. I would guess the move up started a while back.

Perry told me that IMar was going 65 (when we were at Worlds). I still don't believe he'll make it.
I wouldn't even think he'd attempt it. The turnaround time from NCAAs til OTT is not a lot of time for that big of a cut. I don't see it happening.

That is a hell of lot to cut down just to get beat by the Brentcalf. I'm actually more worried about Green who seems to have less to cut...he was able to get down to 66kg and wrestled great in 2013 and won Universities.

I think most of you guys are missing the point on taylor. In his interview he said he is committed to wrestle through 2020. That is a lot of time to add weight to his frame and a lot of time to train with Cael. If im Taylor 2016 would be great but 2020 is the goal.

I am pleased he's trying another weight. I don't see DT beating Dake or JB.

I for one won't be the least bit surprise if he succeeds rather easily. Wouldn't be the first time someone moves up class or classes and still is dominate...... now on the world stage is another matter.

Lacking depth and weakest are different things IMO. Least depth there is a debate, but realistically every weight is only about 2-3 people deep of true contenders for the spot. Ramos is rapidly improving but 57 is still the weakest weight IMO. However, 57 is up there with the most depth IMO (65 and 74 being better). I understand not everyone will agree with me, that's fine.

Either way I didn't interpret ur comment about being about 2020. I thought you were talking about the current landscape. That does make me more in agreance with you.
