We all know the refs suck, so terrible, but not saying thats why we lost. We missed SO many open bunnies that had nothing to do with Mich's def, we just blew it. However, how in the hell can Howard get in officials face, pointing/screaming, and nothing but when Fran does it, automatic T.

I think Fran wanted a technical at that point. The guy he directed his attention to didn't even call the technical.
With how Michigan was defending, Iowa should have racked up way more free throw attempts. While the refs might have been officiating more like it was 2002, I don't think it was necessarily uneven.
There just wasn't enough attempts to get michigan in a position where the refs had to call fouls. Specifically positions 1-3. Instead of throwing up a wild reverse lay up or fading floater, put up a convincing pump fake and react quick enough to power through contact. Connor and patrick both had good entries to the lane but ruined it with poor shots.

Fran doesn’t get the calls because the refs hate him and how he acts towards them. You can’t cuss them out every time a call goes against you.
I honestly thought the ref at the beginning was going after Fran with the way he was heading toward him. Was Fran also going toward Howard when that all happened? Seemed like a lot of jawing with that hook call which wasn’t due to Wagner having his arm around Luka and not removing it as well as his other arm wrapped around Luka’s waste. At the end of that sequence you could say they got the call right, BUT, if they had called the hold well before then LIKE THEY SHOULD HAVE, the rest of it doesn't happen.
Luka has made so many "thru contact" shots in his career I think they let more shit go against him, I really do. He gets the shit hacked out him more than any player in the country for the amount of fouls that ultimately get called.

I agree Kofi gets fouled more without being called. But be careful what you wish for because I also think he would foul out every game if HIS fouls were all called.
Last night was just another example for why I don’t see the advantage of having the same crew continually working the same teams. Little man Larry and his biases came out again. Now to be clear I don’t think the officials had a material impact on the game, Michigan is flat out better.
That hook and hold was dumb as hell. I have seen a lot of bad calls, but that call was the worst I have ever seen, and I am involved in watching a lot of 1A hs basketball and biased reffing with that.
I think they had a impact on the game. They kept luka from being able to move to the basket and score. Instead he had to try and use the rim to create space for himself and missed shots. Getting hammered on his body and scraped across the arms on every attempt altered his shots and efficiency. If those could get called michigan has to reach even deeper into their bench and we get to run different offensive sets. Also likely frees up weezy outside or driving to the rim himself.
The refs absolutely had an impact. I knew going in it would be bad but it was really bad. The big ten wants michigan on that one line and losing to Iowa wouldn't help that.

Guess Izzo bitching at the Big Ten office in the off-season carries more weight then Fran does it.
Fran knows how the game is played better than anyone. Fran is not a “Made Man” in the coaching ranks.

The thing with Izzo is he knows how to play the game with the officials to keep from getting called for a technical. He'll stand there and chew officials out over and over as the game goes along. But when he's got the game in the bag, he starts to play the "aw shucks" act with them and starts to tell them how great an official they are.
Whether Izzo is genuine with that or not, it's hard to say, but he knows to do that to make sure he's given a long leash for the next time they officiate a Michigan State game. "The dean of Big Ten basketball coaches thinks I'm a great official, I can't call a technical on Tom." Some coaches refuse to play that schmooze game with them.

agree it was bad . not sure why luka was any guiltier of a hook and hold than wagner was who had a firm grip on his arm .
What I've noticed about B1G basketball over the years is that if a good player has a way or getting to the line, or playing good defense for a good portion of games through January, the officiating usually neautralizes them to a degree by the time the conference slate is done.
This gives me a bit of hope for postseason play & why I believe Iowa will either A.) Get in a sweet 16 grinder with a team, or B.) Elite 8 & possibly further. Seeding is so critical for Iowa too. The 7/10 line is a no win.

If the refs 'dont like Fran', then maybe Fran is doing something wrong and should change? This idea that every ref is against Iowa is just ridiculous. Garza gets hacked all the time but he also has gotten a lot of "ticky tack" fouls called against other players guarding him. I watched the game last night and Howard was on the refs alot but for all we know it could be the use of an 'F' word that makes all the difference. Just watching Fran's demeanor on the sideline, if I was a ref, I wouldn't like him either.
